HERE, LISTEN TO THIS
For this edition of "Here Listen To This," we turn to John Quincy producer of 1250 WTMA's Morning Buzz with Richard Todd and the WTMA history Web site, WTMAMemories.com. Quincy has been part of Charleston radio since 1981 when he moved from Savannah to become the afternoon drive DJ at 95SX. WTMA is celebrating its 70th birthday with an invitation-only party Saturday at the Three Lions Pub. Take it away, JQ!
Johnny Cash, 'Hurt'
Great song from a legendary artist, but Johnny's voice was past its prime when he did this. Nice, sparse production, though, that doesn't get in the way of the lyrics.

Run DMC featuring Aerosmith, 'Walk This Way'
I loved the Aerosmith original, but Run DMC made it even better. I still have fun playing this at mobile DJ gigs. Even if you're a rocker that hates rap, you're bound to appreciate this hybrid.

Willie Nelson, 'On The Road Again'
Uptempo Willie Nelson doesn't get much better than this, released right at the peak of his popularity.
WTMA used this tune extensively in the '90s as an introduction to their remote broadcasts, so now I always think of hearing Madeleine Kelly on location at some restaurant when I hear it, and WTMA Production director Steve Russell's excellent Willie Nelson impersonation.

Don Johnson, 'Heartbeat'
It's hard to believe this was a Top 5 hit, even in the mid '80s. I guess I helped because I played this on 96.9 WXTC in Charleston. Must have been because of that "Miami Vice" fad.
Luckily the instruments are way up in the mix to help disguise Johnson's musical shortcomings.
Stick to busting drug dealers, Crockett.

Them, 'Gloria'
The original, hipper version of the song that most American radio stations were too chicken to play in the mid '60s because of the "She Comes To My Room" line, opting to make the tamer version by The Shadows of Knight a Top 10 hit instead.
If you have any doubt that Van Morrison can rock, check out this track. It was refreshing to hear this version again, after spinning the Shadows of Knight edition countless times over the years. Either way, it's taught millions of kids around the world how to properly spell a girl's name.

Little River Band, 'Reminiscing'
I've played this song on the radio over a thousand times from the time it came out in 1978 when I was working at a station in my hometown of Lexington, Ky., to just a couple of years ago doing afternoons on the former Sunny 96.9.
And you know what? I've never gotten tired of it. Actually, the older I get, the more I like it. Soft but not wimpy, with a nice, bouncy beat and a great trumpet solo. Smooth as a Lowcountry summer night.
