DePass apologizes for offensive remark

COLUMBIA — Five days after a 390-pound gorilla escaped its zoo enclosure, Rusty DePass found himself standing before a room full of TV cameras with a sealed envelope for first lady Michelle Obama and a one-page apology.

Former state election director Rusty DePass speaks Wednesday at the offices of the State NAACP.

"My comment was offensive and a flippant remark made without thinking," DePass said Wednesday. "It was wrong and foolish, and I deeply regret it and any pain it has produced."

Since last week, 10 words DePass wrote on Facebook that called the gorilla one of Mrs. Obama's ancestors has cost him his job as a commercial real estate agent, his reputation in politics and heaps of embarrassment for his family, friends and associates.

After the comment made rounds in the blogosphere, local newspapers and TV news broadcasts, the South

Carolina State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held a news conference to condemn DePass and what he originally called an attempt at a joke.

Lonnie Randolph, president of the state's NAACP, said he wanted to publicly denounce the comment. Maybe then, he said, people, especially those in South Carolina with its history of racism and oppression, would embrace a simple notion his organization has advanced for 100 years: Treat people with decency and respect.

Tuesday night, after the press conference was announced, Randolph said he had a message on his machine from DePass. Could he come to the press conference and apologize?

"Rarely when we say or do something wrong, do we not know we are wrong," Randolph said. "We also know how to fix it."

Randolph called DePass to the front of the NAACP conference room Wednesday. The men shook hands and DePass read the apology he typed up.

"All I can do is ask you to forgive me," he said.

See the CNN report from the June 13 broadcast.

DePass, 61, served as former chairman of the South Carolina Election Commission and is a past chairman of the Richland County Republican Party.

On Friday, after the gorilla briefly escaped his pen at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, one of DePass' friends on Facebook posted an update about it. DePass commented, "I'm sure it's just one of Michelle's ancestors — probably harmless."

FITSNews, a blog run by political consultant Will Folks, reported the story before it was picked up by mainstream media. In an interview last week with Columbia's WIS-TV, Depass apologized and said the comment was a joke about statements Mrs. Obama made about evolution. It's unclear what remarks he was referring to.

Brian McGee, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Communication at the College of Charleston, said DePass' comment goes well beyond bad taste to "shameful racism," which is especially hurtful in the South, where Jim Crow laws exacerbated the struggles leading up to the Civil Rights movement.

But there is a lesson in it. McGee said people must remember to be cautious with social networking sites that blur the line between what is public and what is private.

"That material is there for the world to see," he said.

DePass has since deleted his Facebook page. He said Wednesday that he did not want to compound his "indefensible words" other than to offer his apology.

He wrote a letter to Mrs. Obama to tell her that he is sorry.

Native Son, you help epitomize what was wrong with that statement. I am a independent and I think that liberalism has help to handicap minorities but it's hard to defend conservative principles when you hear dozens of careless comments like these.
There is such a nasty element hiding in the conservative movement just as there is a fanatic element inside the liberal movement.
Until conservatives and republicans separate their brand from subliminal racism they will not attract any more supporters.

Hawg,
"Lipstick on a pig" is a common expression, not a racially charged epithet.
Just because a self-described lipstick wearing pitbull b*tch used the expression to once again bring attention to herself, does not mean Obama was referring to her.
In contrast, Mr. Depass-gas, expressly and intentionally sent his racial insult against the 1st Lady.
This, as well as the Tennessee State GOP employee's recent racial email, is why most Americans are disgusted by the backward, uncivilized, and just plain dumb GOP.

There have been a lot of posts recently regarding the difficulty SC has in recruiting business and industry.

A tool used more frequently nowadays to screen an area for potential relocation is to read the local letters to the editor and online posts from locals.

nopartisan_noproblem (anonymous) says...

The problem is that anytime you use your free speech to share an opinion or joke about somebody you run the risk of bein reprimanded for it. His employers have every right to fire him over anything they want to, especially racist comments, being that could effect the outlook on his company/group.

What I don't understand is how when a certain person is insulted, any person that shares a common trait with them gets insulted also. If someone was to call me a cracker, or white trash, should another white person in summerville get offended? I don't care what you think of anybody else, if it is not directed to me, why should I care? I know there's white trash out there, and you can feel free to call them out on it all day, I'll agree. It is possible to directly insult a single person without intending to insult a whole race, gender, religion. He didn't make a blanket statement about black people. I don't think the NAACP is racist, but I do think they are constantly pointing fingers saying "hey, see, see, he's racist so our country still hasn't turned around". It seems like the whole organization is banking on racist activity, if we all "got along" what would they do?

And if Michelle didn't respond personally, why does Depass feel he needs to apologize to everyone else. He insulted Michelle, not the entire black race. And to that if someone makes a racist comment, you cannot place the opinions of one on an entire group. I'm not a republican, but all of them aren't racists. Every group has people that will dislike others. It's human nature.

June 18, 2009 at 9:03 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

WhatMeWorry (anonymous) says...

nopartisan, the problem with his joke is two-fold:

1) It references a traditional slur used against Blacks for centuries and, therefore, cuts deeper and broader. There would not be so much hype if he had simply said, "Michelle Obama is an idiot."

2) He is a politician and, rightly or wrongly, held to a higher standard which he failed to uphold.

To me, the striking part of the story is not the statement, but that he was dumb enough to make it on Facebook. The stupidity of politicians astounds me. This is right up there with Hillary Clinton's statement about her trip in which she had to dodge gunfire when exiting a plane when she knew there was actual video footage of her nonchalantly walking down the stairs and across the tarmac.

Episodes like this don't expose politicians as racists or liars but, importantly, as foolish.

Sark (anonymous) says...

It amuses me to no end when conservatives try and justify this (and similar remarks) by saying, "well, evolution says that we come from monkeys/apes anyway." That statement alone is enough to show that they have no idea what they're talking about.

According to evolutionary theory, apes and humans have a common ancestor. One is not descended from the other. Apes are our cousins on the family tree, not our grandparents.

And that's your science minute for the day.

nopartisan_noproblem (anonymous) says...

That is my point WhatMeWorry, if someone called her an idiot who would have cared. I personally would be much more offended if someone insulted my intelligence, as oppose to my skin color. If someone says something about my skin color, it carries no meaning. They have no basis behind their opinion or insult. So why pay it any attention, even more so be insulted?

And as far as the politicians being held to a higher standard. When the democrats criticize the republican party(and vice versa), they are directly insulting a huge group of peoples morals, values, idealogy, and most importantly how they feel our country should be ran. Wouldn't you feel insulted if someone criticized your morals/ethics more than making a blanket statement about your skin?

ltgrunt (anonymous) says...

Since you used the hypothetical example of someone calling you cracker or white trash, Nopartison, I'm working under the assumption that you are caucasian. Before I continue, keep in mind that I'm not condoning the ultra-sensitive mentality that some people have. That being said, I can certainly understand how black people can feel a collective sense of anger and injustice over racist remarks - even stupid jokes - directed even at individuals. Admittedly, I don't share that cultural identity, but I can certainly understand how a few hundred years of bondage, frequently abusive, and decades of legalized, institutionalized racism all based on skin color can lead to a heightened awareness of certain issues.

I'm an American, and of Irish descent. The Irish people went through about 800 years of rape, murder, tyranny and oppression by the British, and my ancestors stuck through it and only emigrated to the US just in time to face all of those "no Irish need apply" signs during one of the earlier trends of xenophobic anti-immigrant sensationalism here in the states. Having a cultural awareness that's informed - even only in some small part - by generations of mistreatment and prejudice, I can certainly understand taking offense at an insult levied at someone else if it is based on a racial or ethnic trait, especially one that I share. Seeing the annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations that reduce Irish contributions to history to shamrocks and green beer is off-putting, to say the least.

Put briefly, I can certainly understand how the larger social or cultural group can be insulted over comments directed at or about an individual.

I suppose as a more widely understandable example, there is the fact that many Americans became justifiably upset at those throughout the world who spoke poorly of former President Bush or of our military figures over the past eight years.

I want people to offend me if that is how they feel they must express their opinion to me. At some point, when people say awful, hateful things like this, someone needs to step up and calmly say "hey, you're being an idiot. Cut it out." There doesn't need to be a grand trial in the court of public opinion, and we certainly don't need any witch hunts, but collectively, we can only tolerate just so much stupid.

The only issue I have with this SC GOP debacle is this kowtowing to the NAACP.

No fanfare no insincere attempt at placating the "Black" community.

Like several other posters mentioned, his stupidity is more telling than his personal prejudices.

I could care less if you're prejudiced or bigoted or even racists.

However I DO care about politicians being so blatantly stupid.

We ALL have personal prejudices, what separates MOST of us from jack*sses such as DePass & some of our regular posters on this site, we don't allow our personal ideals to interfere in the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness of others.

THAT'S when it becomes a problem.

I also reserve the right to fight you tooth and nail if you try to impose your personal belief structure upon my life, personal decisions and right to the pursuit of happiness. STAY OUT OF MY closet (pants reference), the manner in which I raise my children, my bedroom and my body.

So to the poster ATTEMPTING to defend Mr. DePass and his obvious racially denigrating remark by invoking a religious dogma referencing the theory of Creationism, I raise my eyebrow at you.

I agree completely, EY. I could not have said it better myself- on all points.

I also agree that Bill Maher does go too far sometimes- uncomfortably so occasionally, but the people (typically the Christian Coalition types) that were all up in arms about that movie probably never saw it. He didn't make fun of Christianity or the other religions he reviewed (and yes, he had sharp criticism of Islam, Judaism and Hinduism). His point was that extremeism is dangerous in all religions, and people that have faith- he even said, "that's great- it's a personal choice." But when their decisions and faith are clearly not accurate in the contexts of history or science, or shape policy, that's when they need to be called out on the carpet.

Hahaha vmirat90. I LOVE Office Space. It might actually unfortunately be the reason why "ummm yeah" has made its way permanently into my (along with many of my friends) vocabulary. I also say "ummmm no" a lot also. Sometimes it just applies.

Lovely, you know the deal. People thrive on the negative because that's what they want to believe. It's unfortunate but I know I try to commend as many positive developments as I can, because it makes me proud especially when I see young people from my homestate getting their photo in a paper without it being a mugshot. I still love my state and as much as I hate when I see negativity I love when there are stories about the young people that still are trying to make it a great place.

Harold, when you stoop to calling me names you cease to be worthy of my contempt much less attention.

However, I felt compelled to reply to your 11:11 post because some poor misguided fool may actually lap up your vitriol as gospel and perhaps a few words of TRUTH and REALITY may prevent them from following in your footsteps of foolishness and mayhem.

I DID NOT read your 10:45 post as I was busy. Occasionally I compose a post in Microsoft Word in order to better edit for mistakes. Apparently during the time I was editing my post you posted your love note to me. I posted my comment at 10:56 and went on about my business.

Five minutes ago I came back to this article and lo and behold you were pitching a fit because:

1. I do not love you as you love me
2. I didn't give you any attention
3. I often publicly humiliate you on a regular basis
4. You are an immature child
5. You know that WE know you are a bigot and generally post nonsensical flame throwing crap

As I'm still busy I will stop my list there.

I commend you for asking the P&C to highlight the life and murder of Mr. Johns.

How big of you.

However, there have been positive articles (few & far between I may add) of LOCAL residents of color that have never seen a comment from you and other like minded folk.

So please spare me your righteous indignation over your ONE public request (however warranted) to the P&C to run an article on Mr. Johns.

Oh, you can stop calling me names. That playground tactic in getting me to want you as much as you want me has failed and failed miserably.

Oops, sorry guys. Here is the link:

http://www.postandcourier.com/news/20...

It is a story about a mother whose son was killed in 1998 and she is forming a group to help stop the violence in the area. She took a negative act and is working to do something positive because of it. Watch the video http://www.postandcourier.com/videos/.... It is a PSA advertising the forum that will be held at Burke High School on the 20th. Like I said earlier this week, this is a wonderful story about a woman doing what many of the posters here have been crying about for the longest and it only has 3 comments....Not controversial enough I guess.

P.S. The group is comprised of ALL people in the COMMUNITY.

I also am a registered Independent. I have said, in various posts over the past couple of year, the same things you said in your 11:18 post.

So often the radical crazies on either side of the fence are more like each other than they have an ability to see & have the very characteristics they are pointing fingers at & condemning.

Each side manages to justify the characteristics in themselves that they condemn, ridicule, reject in the other "side". Through a convoluted pattern of reasoning they decide it is OK for them, but not for this other group.

Part of me finds it hilarious to watch how clueless some are & part of me finds the hypocrisy & lack of reason & logic very discouraging & sad.

By the way Harold.

I do give credit when it is warranted.

You are quite capable of "debating" those liberal loons who can't see past the propoganda on the tip of their noses.

You are quite capable of tearing apart the ignorant and misinformed.

But when it comes to those posters who refrain from your style of chum baiting, vitriol, name-calling and other types of foolishness, you fail.

You get angry and fall onto the floor, kick and scream at the injustice of it all.

When your back is against the wall you cry foul and bad words.

It's only when you use your big boy words that I even try to engage you.

Too bad really, on occasion you do have some very salient points to relate.

But when your thoughts are covered in sh*t, I step over it as I do the pile I see on a sidewalk.

Have a great day dear.

When you learn to relate to your betters, perhaps we can have a truly cogent debate.

¡Adiós!

What started out as a story about a racist powerful politician who spoke like an idiot has fried a lot more folks...Let's see, all reps (dem-lites), all conservatives, all liberals, The Bible with its Christians, all people from and living in SC (present company excepted, I presume), "you folks" (whoever that might include at the moment), "those folks" ( same aside), and others I don't feel like skimming the comments to list (but you ought to know who you are). That's a pretty big net cast about that one nut; do you think that it has gotten us any closer to working together to solve the real problems. And thanks to organizations who have outlived their usefulness such as the NAACP, it's become media fodder when ANYONE missteps.

For DePass to legitimize their constant race-baiting by apologizing to the Black community via their forum only serves to exacerbate the very real problem of a racial divide.

NAACP picks at scabs at an attempt to remain a 'voice' in America's consciousness.

I for one am tired of their shenanigans and Mr. DePass only made himself look more foolish by standing with them.

His stupidity is what should get him 'fired' from politics not his personal beliefs.

When I tell people I grew up in the South, some of them -- doubtless meaning well -- say I was lucky I escaped.

I somehow can't explain to them that there is no place in America more beautiful than the Low Country, and that a lot of the people they call "racist" have good hearts and would never do anything to hurt anyone.

shoelaces-Laura Bush ran a stop sign at about 8pm when she was 17. The driver of another car going through the intersection died as a result of the accident caused by her running the stop sign.

So if one wants to be inflammatory one could say she "killed someone". But a more truthful & accurate description would be to say that when she was a teenager, her careless driving resulted in the death of another.

I'm curious as to how ballachullish would characterize the Ted Kennedy-Mary Jo "situation". Somehow I doubt she would say that good ole Ted "killed" someone.

"Lipstick on a pig" might not be a racial slur, but comparing in a negative way or drawing a derogatory correlation between animals & a person for the sake of a laugh, criticism, or put down is in poor taste regardless of how one tries to spin it.

Of course not all "animal" comparisons are meant as a put down. Everyone says one of my daughters looks like a gazelle when she runs & it is meant as a compliment.

Hawg,
"Lipstick on a pig" is a common expression, not a racially charged epithet.
Just because a self-described lipstick wearing pitbull b*tch used the expression to once again bring attention to herself, does not mean Obama was referring to her.

pitbull b*tch,? Have you taken a good look at Michelle Obama lately? She's not exactly the epitome of beauty in the eyes of any beholder. She also has a disposition to match her appearance.

What is so gratifying is the unabashed hate that Sarah Palin is generating in left wing losers.

She's beautiful and intelligent with far more real experience than the present occupant of the white house and this poses a real enigma for the left. How do you combat her short of ad hominem attacks or outright lies?

As for this jerk who made the idiotic remark about the first lady, his level of intelligence qualifies him to work at a lower pay grade, bagging groceries might be about right.

That 'bubba', I am willing to wager has a name, he probably has a job, he may have a college degree and perhaps could be a dentist. However, that 'bubba' is a slave to stereotyping derived by presumptuous moronic statements like yours.

You are no better than the racists you presume to attack.

well, charleston...thanks for letting me know that you support that way of thinking. Bravo. If he is a dentist, or work in any sort of customer service or sales capacity, then he is an idiot by completely eliminating a huge portion of possible customers.

And yes, I will attack racists and racists thought whenever I see it. If you want to still live on the plantation in your own mind, have at it. I prefer to live in the world of progress in the 21st century.

Have a great day, however...and good luck to you.

I think Charleston1960 must have misunderstood vmirat's post. He wrote, "that 'bubba' is a slave to stereotyping derived by presumptuous moronic statements" in response to vmirat's comment on "bubba's" bumber sticker that read, "If I'd known this, I'd picked my own cotton."

Charleston1960, in what way did vmirat "stereotype?" He called the guy a racist because he has a bumper sticker that leaves no room for interpretation.

absolutely, what...there is no other way to interpret that bumper sticker- he has literally defined himself as a racist, period. If he wants to live that way, so be it, but don't defend him.

That bumper sticker is on the same level as a t-shirt someone wearing while sitting on a motorcycle stopped at a traffic light. The picture was taken via phone and became a viral pic on the web.

"It's called the WHITE House for a reason"

VMIrat90, I may not defend an individual's beliefs, however I do defend the right for them to hold and express them.

I prefer that such nonsense be made public. Helps you to decide who you want to associate with.

I wish more people would be as forthright in their contempt of me. Especially if it's based solely on my skin color, race or ethnicity.

It's the folk who hide their TRUE nature that I fear.

No I did not misread nor misunderstand his statement. Perhaps you misunderstood my intention. I will tone it down to a level that hopefully you can understand.

'First of all, he was too stupid to have any money, much less own slaves. Probably never been to a dentist in his life either, I'll bet."

I am not defending a bumper sticker. But to add statements like the one above is literal nonsense. That is stereotypical BS. Much is propagated along the lines as the other nonsensical statement made by another poster that alludes to typical GOP being typical racist. It is unjustifiable. Vmir states he is willing to bet the person was a non-working non dentist seeing person. You along with other posters here know he is transgressing the persona drawings of a rotten or toothless yokel person often associated with a name 'bubba' or even 'redneck' and is stereotyping at best. HE could have said the bumper sticker was a racist statement and allude to the fact the person is probably racist. No he did not do that he went further into describing, with 'stereotypical' statements, what he believed or for concentrated purposes what he was willing to bet the person was based on his presumptuous beliefs of what a racist tends to look or act like. His statement is no different than others who perceive a black person sitting on a fence eating watermelon. It is plain stereotyping a person.
I have seen racist with suits on with teeth to make their dentists proud. Heck, the article talks about one. The problem here is people throw the word racists around as if the only people that can fit the title are non-dentist seeing, SC native GOP people. So yes thank God for the free speech laws that allow me to call his statement moronic at best.

Until then, find the truck again, stop and ask him or her if he or she has been to the dentist in his or her life and I will take the bet that he or she has seen a dentist.

_________________________________________________________________________

You put the word racist in quotation marks as if there is doubt what this fool said was racist. People should lose their jobs when their conduct is unbecoming of a person who (in theory) deserves respect. It's not that people are becoming super-sensitive, it that people have to realize that this is not the world of 40-50 years ago, where women and minorities can be marginalized with little or no regard for their concerns. You can't just say and do what you want to and expect no repercussions anymore. As far as the NAACP is concerned, the tone of most of the responses shows you why the NAACP is still relevant. Too many people think that hate speech should be downgraded and minimized as "just a joke" or "he was raised in a different time" and somehow that makes it okay. It's not.

DePass isn't upset about what he said, he's upset that one of his friends didn't call him quickly enough so that he could erase his posting before the media got hold to it. If he calls MO that on a facebook posting, what do you think he says about MO and BO behind closed doors?

And how could any sane person defend it?

WhatMeWorry (anonymous) says...

charleston1960, I see your point about stereotyping the guy with the bumper sticker.

Stereotyping can become a very gray and complicated topic. Stereotyping is really just playing the odds. Is it ethical? No, but it's human nature.

Odds are good that a guy driving an old, beat up pickup with a bumber sticker that says "If I'd known this, I'd picked my own cotton" is a poor racist non-dentist. I'm not saying it's a given, but I'd put down some cash on it. In fact, I'd bet a month's paycheck that there's not a single dentist in the U.S. driving an old beat up pickup with that sticker on it.

Likewise, as you allude to, I'd bet that an 18 year old African American male wearing pants down around his knees with the handle of a hand gun sticking out the back, an over-sized t-shirt, and a sideways cap is more likely to mug me than a clean-cut 30 year-old African American male in a suit carrying a briefcase. Could I be wrong? Sure, but I make that bet every time I walk down the street in Charleston.

The division between "those who are good at evaluating probablity" and "racists" occurs somewhere in the middle of our triangle of white guy with sticker, black kid with gun, and well-dressed man with briefcase (race irrelevent).

When people make assumptions and act on them based on feelings that are not true to the reality of the statistics, that's racism.

I have never used the n... word, how many can say that?"

to HAROLD: Why yes, that would make you a racist. The reason it makes you a racist is because you believe that the color of someone's skin is even relevant. You're quite literally judging someone by the color of their skin, rather than by the content of their character. The only reason that interracial marriage produces "damaged" children (a dubious statement to begin with) is because of the attitudes of a rapidly shrinking segment of society that you are a part of.
