Shotgun blast kills woman
Victim was lying in bed when shot tore through window
By Andy Paras
WALTERBORO — Adela "Nell" Pinckney was lying in bed at her Hampton Street home late Monday when a shotgun blast tore through her bedroom window and headboard, killing the 38-year-old mother of four.
The Post and Courier
Shotgun pellets ripped through a window and bed headboard before striking and killing 38-year-old Adela Pinckney at her Walterboro home Monday night.
Pinckney's 11-year-old son was in the bed with her when the pellets blasted through the window about 11:20 p.m. He was unharmed. Her 21-year-old son was in another room and yelled for everyone to duck, said Jaquetta Glover, Pinckney's first cousin.
The oldest son soon found his mother lying on the bed and called 911.
"He realized when he turned his mother over that blood was coming from her head," Glover said.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey pronounced Pinckney dead at the scene. County Sheriff's Office investigators had not arrested a suspect as of Tuesday night.
Sheriff's Lt. Allen Inabinett said it appears someone intentionally fired one shot into the bedroom and possibly another shot that did not hit the house.
He said investigators found spent shells in the road, so it's possible the shots were fired there, perhaps from a stopped vehicle.
A woman who lives next door, Lynette Garner, said someone pounded on both her front and back doors about 30 minutes before the shooting, but she didn't let them in. She said she was almost asleep when she heard gunshots next door.
To offer tips
Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 549-1203. After hours, call 549-2211.
"All I heard were two gunshots," she said, "and then I saw all the police and EMS."
It was the second time since November that someone peppered the house at 1530 Hampton St. with gunshots. Pinckney called 911 on Nov. 4 to report that someone had shot the house as she and her children were getting ready for bed. A witness reported a black four-door vehicle leaving the scene.
No one was arrested in that case, but investigators determined that it was connected to a juvenile gang, according to an incident report.
Inabinett said it's still unknown whether the two shootings are connected. He said they've found nothing at this time to say it's gang related.
The Post and Courier
Colleton County sheriff's detectives examine the window at the site of Monday's fatal shooting.
Family members on Tuesday gathered at Pinckney's house, where the pellet holes from the shotgun blast remained visible in the front bedroom window.
Glover said it's unimaginable that anyone would want to harm Pinckney, a good mother and churchgoing woman who had been diagnosed with lupus, a painful disease that attacks the immune system.
"She was a happy-go-lucky person," Glover said. "We all have people who dislike us, but it was hard to say, 'I don't like Adela.' She was a very friendly person."
She said family members will raise her other sons and daughter, ages 16, 14 and 11.
Glover said she didn't think either shooting at the house involved gangs, a growing and well-documented problem in Colleton County. Neither Pinckney nor her oldest son has a criminal history, according to State Law Enforcement Division records.
"Deep down in my heart, I know it's not gang related," she said.
Inabinett said they don't think Pinckney's death is related to the death of Marlene Linder, a 42-year-old Colleton County mother slain three weeks ago.
Deputies say Linder was killed by two shotgun blasts as she was trying to get inside her home at 434 Briarleaf Circle about 3:30 a.m. May 24.
Linder's 16-year-old son was inside the home at the time of the shooting.
Glover said she is related to both Pinckney and Linder and that the two women knew each other, though they were not related. She said it's scary that the shootings might be connected somehow.
Pinckney's death is the sixth homicide this year in Colleton County.

Very, very unfortunate and most likely avoidable?? If it turns out he is in a gang then at 21 most in the home would have known that. If it turns out he was into drugs someone in the home knows that too.

Oh, I forgot which posting I am reading. It's got to be that the kid is in the gang. What other explanation could it be?
Can you belive this, no criminal record on this 21 year old.

Walterboro is a very nice small, interesting town. They're having some very nice special events to be enjoyed by locals and draw in surroundng residents and travelers, I've been to about 2 and there is a low turnout. I won't go to anymore because of the horrible crime. I fall under the 'surrounding residents' and I only go into Walterboro if I HAVE to. Until the law gets hold of the situation, they can expect only a handful of attendees, who don't know about the crime, to show up. Crime is rampant in Walterboro. And from what I hear, a lot of it is gang related. So how do you get rid of gangs. GOT TO GET TOUGH!

This is a heartbreaking story; I can't believe this woman was simply murdered in her bed. No burglary, no home invasion, just cold-blooded murder. What the hell is wrong with people?
I can't help but notice that the neighbor had someone pounding on her front and back doors, and responded by ignoring it and going to bed. Then she hears not one but two shotgun firings outside and again does nothing.
Maybe I missed the part where there's a regular hunting area outside her house that would easily explain two shotgun blasts at 11pm, but why no call to 911? It seems symptomatic of downtrodden neighborhoods, in which they collectively become passive towards crime. It isn't until the law-abiding decide that they'd rather have the police on their streets rather than criminals that the problem can be corrected.

It's pitiful at some of the comments on this page..... " I bet the 21 year old knows more than he's telling".... "there's more to this story". I grew up in Walterboro, and the lowcountry, and I thank God everyday that I don't live there anymore. I now live in DFW , Texas and I look back and see all of the ignorance and racism that STILL exsists in the Lowcountry. The comments that were being made on this page were obviously racist remarks. Most of you aren't intending to be racist, but it is natural for you, because of how you were raised and how you continue to live. People out west hear of the news from the south and the cringe and talk about how "backwoods" things there still are.
If this had been a white family victimized, I wonder if the comments like " theres more to this story" or " the son knows more than he's saying" , would have been said. I doubt it. It's the form of racism and stereo typing that still exsists and poisons the south still to this day. By the way... I am a white male before any of you jump to conclusions.
I think the important thing here is that an innocent lady lost her life, and we have a cold blooded killer roaming this streets of Colleton County. My heart goes out to the family. But my heart also goes out to the people who made some of the ridiculous statements. I feel sorry for you because you were filled with so much ignorance and lack of education. Lord, I am so thankful I have moved from that racist breeding ground !!

Daniel...From the Dallas Morning News....
Dallas police believe whoever gunned down 19-year-old Mario Salinas in Red Bird early Monday morning was aiming for his cousin.
Investigators think Salinas' cousin loaned his car to a woman and got into an argument with her and others regarding her use of the vehicle. The woman and acquaintances drove away from the location in the 8900 block of Metz Avenue, near Interstate 20 and South Polk Street. Police suspect that they returned a short time later.
The driver stopped the car at the intersection of Metz and Beckleymeade Avenue, and someone shot Salinas, who was standing with his cousin outside his home, police said. He died a short time later.
"There was an argument among friends, and this guy had nothing to do with it," said homicide Sgt. Gene Reyes. "He was just an innocent party."

There are white, black and mex in some of these gangs. "I" would also assume that one of these teenagers know something. What has that got to do with race? It's about teenagers nowadays, and the things a lot of them are involved in.
Both households had 16 year olds, and this one also had a 14 year old. Could be anyone of them that knows something, not just the 21 year old.

Although I was born there and raised there I couldn't wait to get out. Not because it's racist but because I didn't care to be permanently living in the 1950's where everyone knew your business or if they didn't, they made it point to even if it meant making BS up.

Kris86, it was a shotgun blast, according to the article, meaning the bullet had pellet rounds, most likely, and if that was the case the pattern you see in the picture is how many pellets one round can hold and how it scatters when shot off. (hunters use bullets like that most of the time)
