Coach steps down with assault and battery case still pending

CLEMSON — Longtime Clemson men's soccer coach Trevor Adair stepped down from his post Tuesday, following a leave of absence after his April arrest.
Adair was arrested on assault and battery charges in April, after police found Adair had attacked his two teenage daughters. The case is still pending.
Adair led the Tigers to nine NCAA appearances in his 14 years as head coach. The school announced assistant Phil Hindson will serve as the interim coach next season.

"After a great deal of thought and prayer, I believe the time is right to pursue other opportunities in coaching and to help transition the Clemson program to new leadership," Adair said in a released statement.
Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips thanked Adair for his "contributions to the soccer program."
Among Adair's most notable contributions was a trip to the Final Four in 2005, the program's first since its 1987 national championship season.
The Tigers also were ranked No. 1 in the final regular season poll in 1998. Clemson won the ACC regular season and tournament title in 1998, and also won the regular season title under Adair in 2001.
Adair finished with a career mark of 174-91-26 at Clemson. Including four years at Brown University, Adair has a career mark of 208-115-31.
In recent conversations with Adair, Clemson assistant athletic director Kyle Young said he believes Adair desires to again be a head coach.
"He's trying to work things out," Young said. "He's struggling."
