One-cent sales tax on track to pay for Dorchester roads, but costs aren't

ST. GEORGE — A penny just doesn't buy what it used to. Neither does 12.5 billion of them.

So, as Dorchester County gets ready to issue the final $57 million of $125 million in bonds to pay for 22 road projects that voters approved in 2004, its leaders continue to scramble to find other funding and actively lobby for more federal stimulus money. Despite the tumbled economy, revenue is coming in on track from the one-cent sales tax enacted to pay for the bonds. But it just isn't enough.

"We didn't know inflation was going to jump so high," said Wallace Ackerman, vice chairman of the county's Penny Sales Tax Transportation Authority.

County Council tonight votes on first reading of the $57 bond issue.

I just saw a bunch of newly paved streets in Dorchester County. Gravel on top of tar and the cars going up and down the roads press it down.

Keep that crap. It's as worthless as the people that laid this mess.

more taxes? If they keep this up one day there will be .99• tax. Then a 99• taco will cost $1.98. Rising taco prices suck!

Elected officials can never understand why citizens do not trust government! As you folks probably recall, when campaigning for the penny sales tax, the Dorchester/Summerville Chamber of Commerce and county councilmen obtained a letter from the Speaker Harrell that matching funds would be forthcoming! The rest is history! No matching funds, these councilmen and lawmakers are still in office, and Harrell is still Speaker of the House!! It never ends! LOL

Throw the bums out in 2010!!!!

If the projects approved 5 years ago had all been ready to go, the cost wouldn't have escalated nearly as much!!! Get your ducks in a row before you put your hand out. Now the whole county is paying for poor planning.
