ChARLESTON CITY COUNCIL: 4:30 p.m., City Hall, 80 Broad St. The Ways and Means Committee agenda includes the awarding of a $5.5 million construction contract for the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center. During the regular meeting that begins at 5 p.m., the Serrafix consulting firm will give a presentation of how the city might address climate change.

CHARLESTON COUNTY COUNCIL: 7 p.m. Lonnie Hamilton, III Public Services Building, 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston. Among other business, council will vote on funding greenbelt purchases, including a more than $5 million request from Awendaw to buy land for a new town park on Doar Road.

"DUMP THE PUMP DAY": All day. CARTA invites everyone to "Dump the Pump" and will allow area residents to ride CARTA for free all day. Giveaways on various routes also will be going on throughout the day.
"THE RESPONSE" FILM: 6-8 p.m. Unitarian Church, 4 Archdale St. In honor of Torture Awareness Month, the church presents "The Response," a film following the trial of a Guantanamo Bay prisoner. A discussion will follow the film. 723-4617.

IMPACT OF VIOLENCE ON OUR COMMUNITY: 1 to 3 p.m., Burke High School auditorium, 244 President St. Charleston residents, clergy and community leaders will meet to discuss solutions and alternatives to the violence that has claimed so many lives in the Lowcountry. They are part of a 15-member group called Community Partnership that is working with Charleston police to stem the tide of bloodshed and ease tensions during the violence-prone summer months. The group is holding its first forum Saturday as part of a planned series to highlight the impact of violence on the community. This session will feature panel discussions, booths and experts addressing crime prevention, victim advocacy, gang awareness, education, job opportunities and family support and counseling. Admission is free.
KID CRAFT DAY: 2-4 p.m. Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, 1254 Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant. Free. Fabric artist Zelda Grant will lead a craft workshop for children, during which participants will learn how to make bookmarks with African fabric. 881-5516.
ANIMAL SOCIETY FUNDRAISER: 6:30-10:30 p.m. Memminger Auditorium, 56 Beaufain St. The "Furry Affair Art Event and Auction," a fundraising event sponsored by the Charleston Animal Society, will feature a mix of offerings for art and animal lovers, with proceeds going to benefit lost, abused and abandoned animals cared for by the Charleston Animal Society. Tickets are $75 per person. Dress is business casual. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served.
