Academic Magnet High tops Newsweek list of best schools

Academic Magnet High once again has landed among the top-ranked schools in the country, according to a Newsweek magazine Web exclusive list of the nation's 1,500 best schools.

The North Charleston magnet school earned a No. 12 ranking this year, a few spots lower than its No. 7 ranking last year. Although the school's ranking slipped, its index score that's used to determine ranking improved from last year.

Academic Magnet High was one of only 22 South Carolina schools to be ranked by the magazine this year, and no other Berkeley, Charleston or Dorchester County school was on the list. The next closest South Carolina school ranked was Southside High in Greenville at No. 229.

The ranking is based on the ratio of the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

"I think it's just affirmation that we're doing what we say we're going to do — offer children a challenging education," said Judith Peterson, the school's principal.
