South Carolina could get more specialty license plates
By Yvonne Wenger
COLUMBIA — South Carolina lawmakers could clear the way for the creation of several more speciality license plates geared toward nature lovers, environmentalists and farmers.
The Legislature will reconvene to take up Gov. Mark Sanford's vetoes, including one that creates the new plates. Sanford said he does not question the merits of the groups involved, but he said the Legislature should not be in the business of creating the plates. An administrative process is in place at the Department of Motor Vehicles that allows groups to create their own plates for $4,000 up front or 400 pre-orders.
In all, South Carolina has more than 100 specialty tags for groups that include amateur radio and the Carolina Panthers.
Tim Stentiford with the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association said the specialty plates are a way for advocates to support a cause and display their interests as a personal signature on the vehicles. A portion of the DMV fees for the plates goes toward the causes.

our world around us is collapsing and people have the nerve to ask the legislature for approval on an environmentalist license plate? what a waste of time and thought processes.

How ridiculous. If you support a cause, display a bumper sticker...
I thought the purpose of a license plate was to identify a car. When I was a kid, you could look at almost any plate and, based on the color and number-letter combination, tell what state it was from. Now you have to be right on top of one to know if it's even from South Carolina.
Of course, as ugly as the current standard South Carolina plate is, maybe a specialty plate isn't such a bad idea...

I have to agree with Sanford on this one as well.
I also agree with Sardis that the new plates are ugly. I put specialty plates on my vehicles because of those things. I've noticed more specialty plates since the new plates have been in use.
