Wando senior Caitlin Moquin is the girls soccer player of the year.

Caitlin Moquin played in the Class AAAA girls state soccer championship in May, and will conclude her career in July when she plays in the Clash of the Carolinas, which features the top senior players from South Carolina versus the top players from North Carolina.

The two-month break gives the Wando senior standout a lot of time to get ready — and look back on her career.

"I've been running. I keep on conditioning," said Moquin, The Post and Courier's girls soccer player of the year. "I know it's going to be hot out there in the middle of July."

Moquin was a four-year starter for the Warriors and played on two state championship teams. It would have been three, but a five-minute lapse last month cost the Warriors the title in a 2-1 loss to Mauldin.

"It was really sad when we lost that last game," she said. "There's no more high school soccer for me, and sometimes that's hard to believe. Now, it seems a little bittersweet.

"Losing that game doesn't put a damper on things, on my career," she added. "I can say I played on the first (girls) Class AAAA team that won back-to-back state championships. And, I can say I played on the first team to win the Viking Cup at the beginning of the season and the state championship at the end. That's really special. It's been a great four years for me as well as the rest of the team."

The Warriors posted a 90-8-4 record during Moquin's career. As a defender, she didn't score many goals, but her defensive and leadership skills allowed her to have a big role in her team's success.

"Probably the biggest thing about Caitlin is she's very vocal and very smart on the field," Wando coach

Shannon Champ said. "She was a leader, a captain, and she would get on someone if they didn't do their job."

Moquin, who edged out Bishop England keeper Erika Christensen for player of the year honors, heads up the All-Lowcountry team. Joining Clash of Carolina selections Moquin and Christensen are Ashley Reetz, Stratford; Kimery Angotti-Smith, Pinewood Prep; Kendall Bacon, Summerville; Tess Gillis, Bishop England; Savanna Prosise, West Ashley; Chelsea Whiteman, West Ashley; Brooke Lisson, Wando; Madeline Fellabom, Wando; Courtney Angotti-Smith, Pinewood Prep and Abigail Thompson, Bishop England.

Gail Osborne, who coached Pinewood Prep to a 22-2 record and the SCISA Class AAA state championship in her third year, is the coach of the year.
