Summerville teen dies in car crash

Saturday, June 13, 2009

A Summerville teenager is dead following a single-car crash on U.S. Highway 78 Thursday night.

Devonte Gathers, 16, was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. at Trident Medical Center, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said.

Authorities said Gathers did not have any identification on him at the time of the 9 p.m. crash and that it is not clear whether he had a driver's license.

Charleston County sheriff's Maj. John Clark said the 1994 Honda Accord that Gathers was driving was reported stolen from a local Applebee's restaurant.

An incident report said the car was westbound on Highway 78 when the driver lost control on the wet road. The car ran through a power pole and continued going across a small parking lot where it struck a parked U-Haul truck, according to the report.

He was not wearing a seat belt.

You live up to your name you ignorant Clampett. It takes a certain type of cretinous filth to celebrate a child's death.

It just amazes me just how heartless some people can be. Yes, the teenager committed a crime he should not have...............but, why should others condemn his actions seeing that he has paid for it dearly with his life? Is life not much more precious than a man made car, that can surely be replaced? He made a terrible mistake, and so did many of you in condemning it in such a foolish manner. Is this a crucial and painful time for his loved ones? Sure it is ! Tell me, how silly can some heartless people become?

dhaencore-I'm sure this situation is painful, but where are all of the people that love him when he's out that late at night, ends up alone in a stolen car, and dead, wrapped around both a power pole and a U-HAUL. There sure is an outpouring of love once someone is dead and gone, but in reality, when that poor little fella was alive and walking around, he was probably nothing more than a liability. You can bet your a@@ that NEVER, when my boys were that age, would they have EVER have ended up stealing a car. They did not grow up privileged, nor did they grow up in decent neighborhoods. They ended up with people that I would just have soon put a bullet in, and STILL did not go so far as to steal someone's vehicle. You can make every excuse for Devonte's actions, but when it really comes down to it, you all failed him. Go mourn him, and protect his brothers.

Stealing a car is wrong, no matter how you look at it. The article states that Devonte was 16 years old which is old enough to know right from wrong. I agree that this kid should have been punished but not with his life - not like this. Its said if you live by the sword ~ you die by the sword. Devonte made a bad choice and now his family and friends will suffer his loss. Having lost a child to a car accident, my heart goes out to his family. There is nothing more shocking than to receive a phone call and being told that your child has been involved in a car accident and is badly hurt, or worse, dead. This is a tragedy with a twist. I only hope the owner of the Honda Accord had full coverage insurance to recoup their loss.

the loss of yet another life here is regretable and I do not applaud it at all. I think what people are saying is that they are so frustrated with crime and delayed punishment in general. What I will say is that if someone did have to die that night, it seems more fair for it to have only been the perpetrator - as young as he is - than an innocent bystander uninvolved at all in any of the circumstances.

dhaencore09, first of all, let me say, my condolences goes out to you and Devonte's family. I don't know the family or circumstance around what happened but my heart goes out to everyone. White posters this mother may have very well raised her child right, and I see it all the time, but they go astray. Even when dad at times, are involved in the child's life, kids have a mind of their own. All we can do is hope that they do the right thing.

Second, dhaencore09, I know this is upseting for you, (I am black also) but this type of behavior has got to stop. I don't know what the teen was thinking when he stole the car, but he ended his life, no one else did this but him. Last month a WHITE guy on Hwy 78 near Trident Hospital killed an INNOCENT BLACK woman and injured her daughter, in a high speed chase from the police. These things happen and it is no respect of color. Crime is crime no matter what. I fault you with the tone of your post. I am not sure how old you are, or whether you are a young man or woman but your comment was filthy. We do not need to get our point across with that tone of voice and words. I am a single mother of a 12 year old daugther and I teach her everyday about respect. The one thing I hate is someone with a filthy mouth. This is what's wrong with society now, people think that this is acceptable. Can't say what my daughter does or will do when she is 16, but I have, and am teaching her right from wrong everyday. She sees how hard I get out there and work to provide what she needs, and I in no way would ever take something that does not belong to me and I am teaching her this too. These young people, white and black need to stop taking what is rightfully someone else's stuff. The same way that person got what they have, they can get it also. It's called working, being responsible and getting whatever you want. So sorry about the lost, but this could have been prevented. This teen ended his own life, no one else did.

Blackandproud, you are truly the voice of reason. It is time that parents of any color take responsibility for the children that they have brought into this world. I see kids no older than 12 or 13 out very, very late at night. Parents have definitely dropped the ball. It does take a village to raise a child, but the villagers should not have to step in where a neglectful parent has dropped the ball. This is a crying shame, but Devonta would be alive right now had he not chosen this particular lifestyle. It would NOT have been an isolated incident, and that's the truth. It was probably not the first time, either. There is no telling where he would have drawn the line. Things happen for a reason, and maybe our Higher Power decided that Devonta was not going to change, was going to be a burden to society, and one day, might possibly take another persons life, and it was his time to go. Dhaencore09, your posts are offensive. Sorry for your loss, but you also say that you're teaching your nieces and nephews right from wrong. WHY????? Did your brother/sister drop the ball as well???? WHY are you the one teaching those children lessons? Please, please, please...think before you have unprotected sex. These children are more than an increase in benefits (there is nothing racist in that comment...simply stating a fact. I live in a relatively bad neighborhood, and quite frankly, the WORST kids I live around are white, and I'm white). Frankly, I'm not even interested in why you're having to teach your sibling's children anything. Don't go churning out a bunch of kids so your family can live piled one on top of the other, with children sleeping on mattresses on the floor, because no one has figured out that it takes a wage earner to raise a family. Do right, because it's apparent that whoever raised Devonta, didn't.

First off this is not the place for family and friends to look for condolence. Second the individual made a choice to steal that car and made himself his own executioner. No one forced his hand, he chose the punishment he received by getting behind the wheel. I am glad he did not maim or kill anyone else. I have sympathy for the family and those who cared for him, but I also understand how many people have been victims of crime and seen the criminals walk with little or no justice. When a person commits a crime and kills themselves in the process it will be a tragedy for those close to that person, but do not expect the general public to be too sympathetic. I hope he did not suffer, and I am glad he did not hurt or kill an innocent family.

All of you with these truly ugly, crude comments, OMG, what a bunch of trash you are and I mean TRASH. As you sit there on your big fat arses, no respect, probably have no family, no kids, not even a dog would want you, smoking your joints, drinking your beer, and you pass judgment. I thought people here in the south were much better and grown up than this, but obviously there is still a bunch of trash around that needs to be recycled. Maybe it is you that needs to depart this earth to make it a more respectful place to live; maybe your car needs to be wrapped around a tree so we can point fingers at you and tell you how much you deserved this. It is truly a shame that we still have such idiots left. Try and roll out of bed with your hangover Sunday and see if you can make it to a church before you are struck down dead. I would not want to be any of you or near you. I wonder what you all were doing at 16, having sex, drinking, etc as I seriously doubt with your lack of knowledge and trashy self that you were up to any good. This child still had a chance to turn his life around as many do. God forgive your idiotism!

I am appalled by all the negative comments about this article. This young man made a very bad decision that cost him his life. I can't believe all the heartless people who actually care more about a material item such as a car, which I might add can be replaced, that's why we have insurance: over a life. The parents of this young man are suffering a horrific lose. It's not fair for anyone to say his parents weren't good parents. If any of you have teenage children then you should know you will never always know exactly what they are up to 24/7 and if you think you do you are sadly mistaken. My heart goes out to them. I would like all of you who wished death on this young man, who stole a f'ing car, to think about this being your friend, brother, son, father, uncle or any other family member and ask yourself is DEATH the punishment you would wish on them? I don't think the answer would be yes. No one has the right to judge this young man on a mistake he made without actually knowing him and assuming he would have been a career criminal. Jail would have been a sufficient punishment. I work very hard for everything I have and if someone came and took it all from me, of course I would be pissed but my insurance would cover it and I would be thankful for having my life. I would never wish DEATH on anyone who stole from me. You have murders and rapist who get less then that. Have a heart people. Please don't get it twisted, I'm not saying what he did was ok, but he didn't deserve to loose his life over it. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Devonta, and the other individuals who were involved in this incident.

I would like to add to my last post that I am a formal Police Officer and now a retired Fire Fighter/EMT who happens to have a 16 year old daughter. I've seen a lot of crime, death and stupid mistakes teenagers have made. I've cut people out of mangled vehicles that have been stolen and never once did I think they deserved what they got. It doesn't matter how well a child is raised they still have a mind of their own and think they have all the answers. I hope and pray my daughter makes all the right decisions but I'm not that nieve to think she always will. I just know I will be there for her no matter what. I don't put her on a pedistool because I know what it's like to be 16, we've all been there. No one is perfect. Stealing is wrong and unacceptable but it's not punishalbe by death in the eyes of the law. So why in the world would some of you say this young man got what he deserved? I'm making these posts because my daughter brought this article/comments to my attention and is upset on how so many people can be so ugly and mean and quit frankly I am too. It is very disturbing to know what some think about material things...I hope none of these people are my friends. A crime was committed but a life should not have been lost. Hopefully, this tragedy, and yes it is a tragedy, will be a reminder to all of the highest consequence to pay for committing a crime. And if one person thinks twice because of it then maybe DeVonta did not die in vain. I will also pray for those of you who actually think DeVonta deserved to die for stealing because in my eyes you have been touched by evil. I'm wondering how many of you think the 13 year old girl from Sangaree Middle School who stole the family car, wrecked and died also deserved what she got...hmmm Was she a future criminal?

The variety of responses ranging from lack of accountability for the driver ("he was a good kid, who made bad choices, wrong/place, wrong time" to "he deserved it", "I'm glad", and "he was raised right" or "he should have been raised better") illustrates why this issue will never get better overall, because people can't even agree on what is wrong and how best to reduce or prevent the next one!

Secondly, who cares if a person is a "good person but makes bad choices"? Its not the issue of whether he is a good person or not that's the problem. Its the bad choices!! If a good person or a bad person makes the same bad choice and kills you YOU ARE STILL DEAD which is what you are really trying to prevent.
