Republican group wants Sanford to run
Caucus says governor protects taxpayers
By Robert Behre
At least one faction of the Republican Party thinks South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford should run for president.
The National Board of the Republican Liberty Caucus passed a resolution encouraging Sanford to seek the office in 2012. It cited the way Sanford has voted his conscience on tough issues.
Dave Nalle, chairman of the California-based caucus, said: "In his two terms as governor of South Carolina, Sanford has shown independence and creativity and acted as a vigilant guardian of taxpayer interests."
The caucus is far from the highest profile organization within the GOP. It has no South Carolina chapter, and Charleston County Republican Chairwoman Lin Bennett said she has never heard of it.
"I guess they're like everyone else. No one wants to listen to Mark when he says, 'You know I don't want to run anymore,' " she said.
Sanford press secretary Joel Sawyer said Thursday he had not heard of the caucus' endorsement but said, "It's very kind and very flattering, but it's nothing he has any intention of doing."
Sanford's national political profile rose this spring as he tried to use part of the federal stimulus money to pay down the state's debt instead of using it to prop up next year's budget. His position was popular among many rank-and-file conservatives but much less so with GOP lawmakers. The S.C. Supreme Court ultimately overruled him last week.

This just goes to show how far the republican party has fallen. Even the suggestion that Sanford is "presidential" material is laughable. Why they think voters would choose a governor for high office whose state is last in just about all good things and first in all bad things should give what is left of the sane part of the republican party pause. I won't count on them coming to their senses though.
A party led by a hateful quivering mass of blubber named Limbaugh doesn't really have much hope of attracting intelligent and thoughtful voters. All they have left are the ignorant and/or racist southern vote and those so intellectually stunted they can not think for themselves of which Sanford is the poster child for.
Sanford stands for nothing but himself. His utter failure as a governor will surely preclude his dream of a further political career. If he had an ounce of integrity he would hang his head in shame and never show his disgusting face in public again. All Sanford represents is another failure of South Carolina to do what is in its own self interest.
After 7 years what progress has Sanford brought to this state? None, zero, nada not one single thing that I can think of and this qualifies him to be president? Jeeze, talk about scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

realamerican, agree with everything you said but one, I take exception to your linking of the words "racist" and "southern". You speak like a carpetbagger. The SC Democratic Party endorsed Sanford to run for the Republican Nomination for President at it's convention in April, over 1000 delegates. It was pretty clear the delegates relished the idea of Sanford being crushed by Obama. The resolution passed without a single, dissenting vote. I voted for it myself.
Please run our Governor for President Republicans. Our state will be utterly humiliated, unfortunately, but nothing is going to stop him. He'll lecture the Nation on how to solve its problems. Surrogates for his opponents will hold up facts and figures on how badly South Carolina has been doing and anyone thinking of bringing jobs or investments here will head somewhere else. It will be a grinding, year long humiliation for our state.
Unlike Alaska, we're not cool or a long way from everywhere else. Our dirt is easy to find and piled up in abundance. It will be shooting fish in a barrel for his opponents.
After that, watching him get crushed on Super Tuesday 2010 will be our only reward.

I'm a Southerner, 50 years here in SC (I'm 50). My Mom was from upstate NY and one of the MOST racist people I know. The first African American/back person to ever walk in our house and the only one that I ever saw do so. He played on my college football team (that's why he got in). She called blacks "colored" and uses the "N" word till the day she died.
Personally, I never got it. People were people to me and they still are. I know very few African Americans very well but, those i do know well I respect and count among my best friends.
Racism runs all ways. Until we learn to accept people for who they are and what they offer the community and us, rasism will exist. I don't expect it to go away. It will always be here until the good Lord comes back.
I know Mark Sanford personally (went to college with him). He is a good man. He has stood alone on the issues, particularly the stimulus money. I may not agree with him but, I respect him. I know that he will stand up and fight for what his principles are and what he believes to be right.
I'd rather have that in office, any office than people who will bend down and cowtow to the lobbyists and special interest groups. I don't want my vote bought. I want it earned.

Just why do you think they are going to do anything differently than they have always done before?

Gov Sanford, has done a good job. The stimulus bill fight demonstrates his logic of refusing to take federal funds from an adminstration that is showing its willingness to impose its will on any and all that take the money.
All you have to do is look at all those that wanted the 'free' money and see who they are, versus those that opposed the taking of the Chinese backed money.

Intelligent recognition of his potential predates the current political developments we are now witnessing and also laughs at the insane and almost PSYCHOTIC overconfidence of some that the GOP and conservatism are somehow dead.

Oh, and he screwed up life for many during Hurricane Floyd....both of which I believe brought his downfall.
Give the current Washington administration another 12-18 months to "fix" things. If they are successful then it will be hard to bring about "change" in the White House until 2016. However, if they screw things up (as they have begun to do), then the conservatives/Republican party will have a LOCK on the White House.
Traditionally, this presidential cycle has only been for one term.

One of the things that Mr. Obama is proposing is to tax soft drinks an additional $.01 per ounce of drink: To help pay for the cost of medical expenses that drinking soft drinks causes:
When this idea takes place, watch out for the adult drinks, beer, wine and hard liquor, in my opinion these drinks cause more medical expenses than that of soft drinks:
Have you ever heard of a person driving down the road drinking a soft drink and killing someone or paralyzing them, because he/she could not react in time to avoid the accident: I don't think so:

I wish that everyone reading this post would realize that elections are not won or lost based on past decisions. Elections are won by the candidate that can promise the most stuff and get the most people to believe it will actually happen. Low income voters have been waiting on the Democrats to save them for decades, and it hasn't happened yet. I wonder if that nice old lady that asked Obama for a new house during one his town home meetings has gotten her dream home yet... Barack Obama is President not because he was some great past leader. Never ran a thing in his life, let alone a company, state, or nation. Anyways, he won because of a couple of different reasons. And in no particular order... He was able to garner much more of the African-American vote because of his race. To think otherwise is just dumb. Not the only reason, but much to do with. Secondly, there was such a strong resentment from this country for Bush, that barring a crocodile dressed in lace singing Hee Haw chosen to lead the Democratic Party, the GOP did not have the most realistic chance. Finally, Obama promised more free stuff and more big government protection than McCain or any other republican. I think that as time goes on, the Republican Party will gain its strength back no matter who the candidate is. You can argue it all you want or choose to try to ignore it all you want, but the fact of the matter is, more Americans live their lives as Conservatives, even though they vote in opposition to the GOP ideals. If at ever in your life you have wanted just a little bit of respect and credit for something that you accomplished on your own without it being handed to you, then that is the core concept of the GOP ideology.

MAY 12, 2009 Soda Tax Weighed to Pay for Health Care
Senate leaders are considering new federal taxes on soda and other sugary drinks to help pay for an overhaul of the nation's health-care system.
The taxes would pay for only a fraction of the cost to expand health-insurance coverage to all Americans and would face strong opposition from the beverage industry. They also could spark a backlash from consumers who would have to pay several cents more for a soft drink.
On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee is set to hear proposals from about a dozen experts about how to pay for the comprehensive health-care overhaul that President Barack Obama wants to enact this year. Early estimates put the cost of the plan at around $1.2 trillion. The administration has so far only earmarked funds for about half of that amount.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington-based watchdog group that pressures food companies to make healthier products, plans to propose a federal excise tax on soda, certain fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and ready-to-drink teas. It would not include most diet beverages. Excise taxes are levied on goods and manufacturers typically pass them on to consumers."

BlackReign, at the national level, neither Congress nor the President are pushing the soda tax; from that article, it looks like the Senate is only considering it because of that health food watchdog group. I assume that the members of the Senate didn't throw them out on their posteriors only because it's impolite to do so.
The article stated that many states already have such a tax, and while the states are free to do so, I doubt it would be seriously considered or applied at a federal level. The Chicago example, however, is only a municipal tax charged against retailers - not consumers - and doesn't look to cover the entire state of Illinois. Odds are that the people of Chicago wanted that tax to pay for something, much like the 1• road tax put on some local ballots here a few years back.
"If at ever in your life you have wanted just a little bit of respect and credit for something that you accomplished on your own without it being handed to you, then that is the core concept of the GOP ideology."
Chill, the GOP doesn't have a monopoly on hard work, self-reliance and self-respect. People who value those ideals don't decline to vote GOP mistakenly. Many intentionally vote for non-GOP candidates because they believe those candidates to be the best choice, regardless of party platform. People who vote Democrat aren't always looking for handouts, just as people who vote Republican aren't always looking to supply the country by taxing the poor.
The Republican party will reorganize, just as it did after Nixon, and it will eventually have a strong, easily quantifiable identity again. For now, though, the Republican party is a three-headed monster with multiple personality disorder, and until it gets its collective mind in order, it's going to keep appearing weak and ineffectual. Still, there's nothing like a good busted lip to set your head back on straight, and in this case the lessons learned during the last administration and the recent election will hopefully give the party a moment of clarity.
On the bright side, this could be an opportunity for smaller, more focused political parties to increase public awareness and break the stranglehold the two-party system has on American politics. Sweden has a "pirate" party that believes in reforming patent and copyright law to be less restrictive to users, publishers and developers and they managed to secure at least one seat on the European Union. If they can do that, why can't more of our lesser-known parties secure some representation in our own Senate or House?
Sandnat, when someone makes a claim it's customary to provide evidence. Even BlackReign provides links and quotes when making his arguments, although I sometimes disagree with his conclusions. Granted, the "burden of proof" responsibility is more typically associated with trial and formal debate, but in this setting it is still a considerate step to take when making a claim.

I agree with several of the posters here that SANFRAUD,(not a typo error), will be a JOKE if he is selected by the Republicans to be their candidate in 2012. I'm NOT a republican, but I have faith in the mainstream republican party that this CLOWN will not even be given a speaking slot at their convention. What has he done for S.C. being in office for nearly Eight years? S.C. is the second highest in UNEMPLOYMENT, S.C. ranks at nearly the BOTTOM in education, S.C. has been the RIDICULE in america as a result of him! This CLOWN held a disastrous interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN that showed his true ignorance and incompetence subjecting S.C. to utter EMBARRASSMENT! I agree the mentality of S.C. voters is to vote for someone who will keep the state in double digits in Unemployment, being republican with an R after his name, and continuing to make the state subject to RIDICULE, AN EMBARRASSMENT, A JOKE, and the LAUGHING STOCK in america! With this, SANFRAUD WINS HANDS DOWN!

Stanish, didn't you know all those bad stats as regards our state are not the fault of Sanfraud? Why it is the Legislature, no wait it is the SC Supreme Court, no wait it is "Washington", no wait it is the SC Constitution. Why if we would just declare him dictator he could straighten out everything in no time flat.

I don't post very often because it seems like I'm mixing with bad company when I read garbage from mental midgets like this ReadMyLips jerk. I agree with BlackReign, this fool reads like yukon _suggit and hehateme bro. Does anyone know if the paper has any way of keeping idiots like this from acquiring new user names and coming back regurgitating the same old puke.

It's a bit much for you to call me a fraud, RML. Also, do you really think that a condemnation from you carries much weight when you're on your, what, fifth username?

I like Mark Sanford and he did the right thing in opposing the stimulus money. Just wait and see how bad it gets because of the massive budget and stimulus package. How exactly are prairie dog delineation projects and money for libraries to promote diversity going to stimulate the economy? Some very hateful and short-sighted thinkers on this thread - and I use the term thinkers very loosely.
Right now our economy needs triage, not elective surgery. It was an incredible mistake for our legislature to force his hand in accepting those funds.

Bambi, the time for triage would have been sometime before 2008. By the time that this administration, it was well past time for taking small steps. Stimulus legislation might not be universally agreeable, but it's on the right scale for what needs to be done.
For the state's economy, both the governor and the state legistlature share the blame for the God-awful shape that South Carolina is in - and I'm talking about the positions, because this problem stretches back farther than just the people who are in those offices now.
On the whole, the people of this state need to stop voting for people just because they've been in office for a while or because they come from political families.
