Man cleared in shooting death at beach shop

CONWAY - A South Carolina man has been cleared in the shooting death of a man outside a beachwear store in Garden City.

Multiple media outlets reported a jury in Conway deliberated seven hours before finding 24-year-old Eli Eliyahu of Myrtle Beach not guilty Thursday in the 2007 shooting death of Bradley Pope.

Circuit Judge Larry Hyman ordered that Eliyahu be released immediately.

Neither Eliyahu nor his family would talk about the verdict. One of his attorneys, Preston Brittain, said they were pleased.

Pope's mother was carried from the courtroom and was treated by emergency medical service workers after the verdict was read.

Eliyahu testified he feared for his life at his Garden City business after confronting Pope about the conduct of his two sons in the store.
