State treasurer discusses repairs to Laffey
Thursday, June 11, 2009
South Carolina's state treasurer is scheduled to discuss money for maintaining the World War II destroyer Laffey.
The Laffey, known as "the ship that would not die" needs repairs to keep it open as an attraction at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.
Treasurer Converse Chellis meets with reporters Thursday at the museum pier.
Immediate repairs are expected to cost $300,000, although a study earlier this year showed complete repairs would cost $7 million and take a year to complete.
During the Battle of Okinawa in World War II, the Laffey was attacked by 22 Japanese bombers and kamikaze aircraft. It was hit by five suicide aircraft and three bombs but survived, earning the ship its nickname.
