Ketner says she won't run in '10

Charleston Democrat Linda Ketner, who challenged incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Henry Brown in last year's 1st Congressional District race, apparently won't be a candidate in 2010.

Linda Ketner

Ketner sent an e-mail Tuesday to supporters saying she would not run again, though she left open the possibility of trying another political run in the future.

"I probably will run again and will look carefully at the environment in 2012 for an opportunity where I might be able to serve and make a difference," she said in the e-mail.

Attempts to reach her were unsuccessful.

Ketner also said that her departure frees up consideration time for two other potential Democratic candidates in 2010, Robert Burton, and state Rep. Leon Stavrinakis, D-Charleston.

She described them as "nice enough to delay their decision -making process until I made up my mind."

Ketner, a businesswoman and philanthropist, said she would continue to stay active in a spectrum of political efforts, including pressing to eliminate lobbyist money to campaigns, support for education and helping women get elected to South Carolina government.

Brown, 73, was re-elected last fall by a 52-48 margin, to keep the seat he has held since 2000. The district covers most of coastal South Carolina from Charleston to Myrtle Beach. Ketner came within about 14,000 votes of winning in November.

Brown of Hanahan said earlier this year that he had as much as $461,000 kept in reserve from his last race to position him for 2010.

Some Republicans are said to be considering a challenge, including Carroll "Tumpy" Campbell III, son of the late governor.

They should all just give it up until that old horses a**, uh, I mean workhorse, Henry Brown decides he won't run again. Once an old white guy with an R after his name on the ballot is in office, you cant pry them out with a crowbar.

Republicans will vote for him until he drops dead, and probably even after if they could figure out how to prop him up in his chair so nobody noticed. He'd probably do as good a job then as he's done while he's alive...

I really hope another Rep. goes after Brown in the primary. This seat should never be this close. She isn't running for a lot of reasons. Obama turnout will be much lower, Food Lion, which daddy owns (no thanks to the PC for the mention) has had a very bad profit year. Therefore Daddy's Lil Girl has to take 2010 off.

The 2008 election she was in is a good example of why I dont vote, other than the lines and how bad the other voters smell. Neither was, in my humble mind, good enough to serve in congress. Brown is a bad politican on a national level, who, in a "safe" district should be moving up in leadership in a thin republican crowd in DC, but he is fending off ties to wealthy people he knows but doesn't remember and fighting off his ties to the wild fire he started in a national forest. Wth?

Ketner is a far left rich kid (nothing wrong with that, but can she "feel the people's pain"?) who ran a somewhat untruthful campaign and smeared a confused-out of his league congressman, rather than finding the middle and talking about how she was going to save us like Obama has with quantitative easing (inside joke to fellow MBA).

As a registered Independent I never cease to be amazed at how common selective observation & selective blindness is in partisan politics.

The solution to the problem sardis12 sees (however, only in regard to white male Repubs it seems) is TERM LIMITS all around for all elected government positions (local state & federal). Once an elected representative or senator becomes a career politician he/she stops being a true arm of the people.

How about old white guys with a D after their name;
Robert Byrd (D-WV) 91 years old
Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) 85 years old
Daniel Inouye (D-HI) 84 years old
Daniel Akaka (D-HI) 79 years old
Arlen Specter (D-PA)
Ted (splash) Kennedy (D-MA) 77 years old

I know these are senators...

I think it works both ways, thats the problem, these politicians hang around forever, and we get the same old song and dance, they play teh tunes and we dance.

Abit, the problem is that once someone is elected into an office here, people don't like to go through the change that comes with putting someone new into that same office.

What's even worse is that when a politician sits in office here for a few decades - even when they never accomplish anything - the people of this state are then more likely to vote in that person's family members. We're ending up with political dynasties full of people who never get anything done and only look out for making their own lives better.

If it were just one political party or the other it would be one thing, but that's the way this state's whole political system works, along with a dash of the good-old-boy system just to be sure there's enough corruption and cronyism.

And I completely agree that term limits are necessary for all elected positions. I think we've seen quite enough of what happens when we have career senators and the like.

He/she also stops term limits, which I also believe would be a major step forward. However, unless it was a nationwide law it would be suicide for an individual state to "vote all the bums out" or pass a term limits law. Like it or not, I don't, the system is seniority based. New office holders only get the respect of their staff and no power. Even if they intend to keep their promise of "change" it can only happen after a lot of time and surrender of principals. By then they are absorbed by the system. Worse then sad and scary for the future.

I thought she was the better choice over Brown. In my opinion, Brown is out of touch with what the constituents are going through (economy) and I wish we could get some fresh energy and ideas in that position. I'll vote for the best choice next time, maybe Stavrinakis will run. Until then, it's business as usual. (which means no business for our state and district)

If people knew, when they trotted off to Columbia or Washington, that after SERVING THE PEOPLE they'd soon be coming back to live in the communities of & among THOSE WHOM THEY SERVED, this country would have a fighting chance to be great once again.

The idea of politics being an avenue of service to one's country is now the other way around. Reversing the 180 this concept has taken over the past 2 centuries will require term limits all around.

tc1-all voters need to contact their state & federal senators & representatives, over & over, asking for term limits.

People are complacent & often get what they allow.

If term limits became a hot button issue..if THE PEOPLE became as passionate about this issue as they have over other issues, change comes within reach.

Otherwise, we can expect more of the same--regardless of how much "change" is promised.

Yes, such a simple answer but how to make that happen? The masses deal only in sound bites and still seem to be unable to get 4 when adding 2+2. How do you sell a "concept" like term limits and as I said nationwide? He!!, even after the SC supreme Court, appointed and maintained by the legislature, said our govenor is just a figurehead comments here continued to trash him for all the states problems now and in the past. I'm afraid the takers outnumber the givers today.

When my father needed help with Social Security, Henry Brown was there. His office staff are more than willing to put you in contact with the right people to get things done.

As a lifelong resident of Mt. Pleasant, I have seen people come and go in the First Congressional District- but in all my years, I have never seen a more loyal, hard working, focused on helping people and not caught up in petty politics and honest representative than Congressman Henry Brown.

Fiction vs. Reality Charlestongolfer's Fuzzy Thinking

Speaking of email, I subscribed to Congressman Brown's email list to try to understand the issues and any forthcoming ideas from Brown.

What I get is standard Republican attack mode naming names (the Democratic enemy), numbers completely out of context, and, of course, platitudes devoid of any responsibility for those numbers; "more than 2 million jobs lost and unprecedented debt ... The American people know what success is, what is real job creation and what is DC spin." Yawn.

So, Charlestongolfer, nothing personal. Thanks for being the straight man. I just wanted to try and relay that uncomfortable, personal touch of a splashy headline in an email from a congressman that seems obvious and a little weird.

"Fiction vs. Reality President's Fuzzy Stimulus Math"

Congressman Brown, of course it's fuzzy. There's no how-to manual for the crisis that you helped create.

My neighbors and I welcome Robert Burton to run for Ketner's seat come election day in 2010. He's a native South Carolinian, Model Citizen and Father, Iraqi War Veteran, and has remained faithful to Democratic ideals throughout the Lowcountry. We need a fresh face like Robert Burton to represent us in Congress--putting Henry Brown back in Washington means reinstating the same corruption and greed that put our state's unemployment rate where it is today. Henry Brown was a cancer whose true political agenda (favor the rich, ignore everyone else) resulted in his failure to be re-elected.

Robert Burton's proven military leadership experience and dedication to community and families make up the best medicine our state needs to lead SC to a brighter future.

If you guys think that Henry Brown is a workhorse, you must be thinking about a retired mule. Henry Brown does not earn his keep in DC, let alone shine among the rank and file. His own party wouldn't be able to pick him out of a line up. This guys coasts by on name, not party, not work ethic and certainly not as a member of the house representing this district. I can't think of any legitimate legislation this guys has proposed on his own, his way of doing things is letting someone else do the hard work and he slaps his name on it as a supporter. Anyone can do that if they get themselves elected. Get real, this area needs a change and Brown has got to GO. Republican, Democrat... it doesn't matter, just someone who is actually going to do some good for the district.

Hopefully he will follow in his father's footsteps and serve the district with the same determination an dedication.

Your case for Henry is emotional, supportive, & detailed; but it's also very selfish, highly-selective, & myopic--we need a leader that will sustain the momentum towards positive change that Ketner started.

Small businesses aren't immune from national macroeconomic forces pervailing thoughout our local economy. Owners aren't just pinching pennies & cutting costs like every other money-making operation, they're running out of creative ways to cut expenses to remain solvent! Unlike the Honorable Governor Sanford acting on behalf of our state's unemployed, small businesses & working families can rarely afford to borrow funds to keep things going.

Pull your head out of Henry's arse & maybe you'll smell the problems he's been sweeping under the rug that fell into Ketner's lap; i.e., meteoric unemployment & long-ignored political concerns of our growing Generation X & Generation Y voters. Putting Henry back in office is like pullin' the plug on a brighter future . . . let's put our trust in Robert Burton who'll know what to do with every fork stuck in SC's road to prosperity.

What is the sense on having a brig, if there is no one in it?

Are you such an idealist that you think NIMBY will only effect you? I like the fact that you will do your work and stick behind him, but he is not doing the same for you. We are paying him to represent a district, not an idealist follower.

Charleston has a hiring problem, not a lay-off or firing problem. The businesses around here have gotten pretty good at the latter. Small business is fantastic for all counties nation-wide, but without sustainable employment (corporate or otherwise), small business doesn't have a chance, no matter what you try to do for them. Passing laws to help small business is one-sided. Look at the big picture. If you strive to bring CORPORATIONS (sustainable employment) to town, there is more reason for small businesses to profit.

I would be embarrassed to represent this district and see how much business has left the area on his watch. Drive up 26 and look at the wasted space along the river. Key water frontage and all the businesses that were there are gone. The navy base... another example. It is a ghost town. There are several business there, but the potential is so greatly underutilized I would be embarrassed that I could not help revitalize that area.

As far as Campbell goes, there is a lot more about SPA than has or will be reported. This guys is a fresh breath and worth the gamble to turn the area around. I would rather have a go-getter the a no, not gonna do it. Randomly call any republican hill office and ask what they think of henry brown... no one knows who he is.

Tumpy is a go-getter? Riiight. Nothing like riding daddy Campbell's coat tails. If he was such a "go-getter," why did he bail from the Charleston County GOP convention after he was told he would be asked to address the crowd? Tumpy has as much "go-getter" in him as a piece of gum on the sidewalk. It won't be long now until he rides journalist girlfriend Tracey Amick's skirt tails in hopes to beat Henry Brown. I appreciate Linda Ketner's hard work on her campaign. It was a pleasure to work for her. In the end, people in the 1st. District (but not Charleston County, which went blue for Obama and Ketner) chose to keep Brown.

Brown is certainly no Mendel Rivers, but there's no evidence the election was fraudulent or so many votes were tabulated improperly that the results aren't reliable.

All these Republicans complaining about term limits can simply vote for someone else. Hearing Republicans complaining about other Republicans doesn't impress me as a Democrat. The Republicans didn't have to nominate Brown. He is their chosen representative.

Having someone in it is one thing. Having murderous vermine on a world wide mission to rule the world and a WISH and DESIRE to DIE for paradise and 72 virgins is very different. Not to mention it would become a tempting target for the rest of the murderous vermine around the world to attack and release the murderers. Successful escape would embarass America and failure with death means paradise. Either way in their mind is success. Even your worst criminal normally wants to live. Our Global War on Terrorism isn't a fashion statement; it's become a fact of life to neutralize a clear & present danger to Americans and their way of life. We should embrace the possibility of expanding the Navy Brig to play an important role in securing the livelihood of all Americans.

This is Robert Burton. As you know from the thread, I am considering running for Congress for the 1st Congressional District of SC.

To be perfectly clear, I am now only considering it.

I returned from my deployment to Iraq last November and I suppose as my payback good deal, the Air Force has sent me down to Tyndall AFB, Florida for six months.

Nancy is here with me and I'm working hard as the Director of Combat Operations for the NORAD Continental Region::::interesting and very challenging work.

I would like to make this decision knowing what I was getting myself and my family into. If you'd like to send a comment, please foreword it to Burton.SC1st@yahoo.com. I would have liked to have put a question mark after that email address, but Yahoo would not allow it.

If you just want to vent, rant, mock, or slur, please don't email me. I'd like to think we could have a thoughtful exchange of ideas, even in this day.

By the way, I checked the legality of running for Congress while on extended active duty military orders. As long as I am a reservist, and the orders are under 270 days, I'm good.

I look forward to hearing from you.

V/R
