Judge wants report on PCB cleanup plans
ANDERSON - A federal judge wants to know what progress has been made in cleaning contamination in a South Carolina river.
The Greenville News reported that U.S. District Judge Ross Anderson Jr. on Tuesday ordered Schlumberger Technology Corp. and several government agencies to attend a July 7 hearing.
Anderson signed an order in 2006 that called for the removal of two dams on Twelve Mile River and PCB-contaminated sediment.
The contamination has prompted health officials to post warnings for 30 years about eating certain fish from the area streams.
More than 400,000 pounds of PCBs were released between 1955 and 1977 from a capacitor manufacturing site in Pickens into Town Creek, a tributary of the Twelve Mile River.
Schlumberger spokesman Stephen Harris said the company hadn't seen the order and couldn't comment.
