Ex-SC councilman: Reduce probation for bribery

Associated Press
Tuesday, June 9, 2009

ORANGEBURG - The former Orangeburg County councilman who served a year in prison for bribery and extortion has asked a judge to cut short his three-year supervised release.

In a letter filed with the court Monday, John Rickenbacker told a federal judge that his work as a constituent liaison for U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn proves that he can stay out of trouble.

Rickenbacker also apologizes for his crime.

Clyburn hired Rickenbacker after the former councilman was released from prison.

Rickenbacker was indicted in 2006 on charges he took $50,000 in bribes from an agent posing as a consultant for a company interested in buying a local hospital.

Rickenbacker pleaded guilty. He has two years left on his three-year probation sentence.

Very appropriate employee for Mr. Clyburn and another layer of govt.
Constituent liason was what I thought Mr.Clyburn was supposed to be. Very resourceful use of taxpayer money. One should expect nothing but the finest amongst us to be fit for government service.
I wonder if there could be a chance for a Presidential pardon along with shortened supervised probation, while we are at it?
Yet another make-work project; but just look at the creation of jobs and who is chosen to receive them.

Wow! I had to read this article three times. I mean, this is beyond belief to me. Let's get these losers out of office! or is that even possible any more. We need to return the government to the people and not these kind of sleazeballs!

Lets see. Jim Clyburn knowingly puts on his payroll a person convicted for bribery and extortion while serving in political office. Interesting. Birds of a feather, maybe?

I'm with you strider. Plenty of people are needing jobs and these guys don't need to think incumbancy in an elected office is recession or depression proof.

Perhaps Mr. Clyburn is training this man to follow in his footsteps. You are the company with which you keep.
