Two teenagers were hurt Wednesday night when their go-cart apparently ran a stop sign and struck a car on U.S. 21 in the Jonesville community of Colleton County. A 15-year-old boy sustained a head injury and was flown to the Medical University Hospital. A 16-year-old girl was taken to Colleton Medical Center.

WALTERBORO — Two teenagers were rushed to area hospitals Wednesday night after their go-cart struck a car in rural Colleton County.

A 15-year-old boy riding on the go-cart was flown to the Medical University Hospital with a head injury. A 16-year-old girl was taken to Colleton Medical Center with broken bones, said Barry McRoy, director of Colleton County Fire and Rescue.

The wreck occurred at 8:26 p.m. on U.S. 21 near the Jonesville community. Firefighter-paramedics arrived at the scene and found both teens lying in the roadway and the go-cart severely damaged.

McRoy said it appears the go-cart ran a stop sign. The driver of the car swerved just before impact, preventing a more serious outcome, he said.

Firefighter-paramedics splinted several broken limbs and treated other injuries.

Neither teenager was wearing a helmet, he said.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Anyone want to guess how many times these injured children witnessed their parents' and/or others not respect the purpose of a stop sign?

Maybe the go-carts didn't have serviceable brakes? Maybe it was go-cart driver skill? Maybe children should be tested on how to respect road signs before operating any motor vehicle?

I had a base police officer pull me over for rolling a stop sign. He began to poke at me with his mag light, so I told him, "Stop!". He responded by asking, "Are you sure you don't want me to slow down and keep poking?" He kept poking until I ran around to other side of my car.

I guess he enjoyed making his point because I didn't get a ticket.

I don't reckun ppl should be driving go-carts on main roads after dark in the first place, but that's just me.

Glad they weren't killed and I hope they will be okay.

armymom, I agree. They had no business on the main road to begin with. When I was that age we used to ride go-carts at my cousins house. They lived on a farm near Manning and we would stick to the dirt paths around the property. Never on the paved road.

So in a moment of fun and a lapse of judgment, they deserved to be almost killed? jca-you must be the most perfect and self righteous person the world has ever known. Have you ever, in your youth or entire life, had fun and had a lapse in judgment or momentary brain fart? We are talking about 2 teenagers here. Got what they deserved...idiocy. What they did was not the best or brightest idea and there were better options, but still they did not DESERVE anything.

we knew cars would hurt us if they hit us.

i had and still have common sense
they deserved to be injured for their stupidity not killed

theres been alot of accidents involving kids and motor vehicles and not just cars atvs and now go carts

a 15 and 16 year old. Hormones running rampant. The boy was probably trying to show off or impress the girl. A split second mistake that will impact them for the rest of their lives.
Teenagers think they are invincible. I know I did.

I hope that they both recover and go on to live a normal adult life.

I don't think that they deserved what happened. "Deserve" connotes a sense of punishment for purposeful transgressions.

They were clearly responsible for what happened. And, they should have foreseen what happened.

But, no, they did not deserve what happened.

You are one in a trillion then jca, one in a trillion. We have all had at least one point in our life where something bad could have happened due to our inattentiveness or lack of being fully prepared-it is a part of growing up no matter what age you are. I do not believe for a second that there is any human being who has done everything right, taken every precaution and never taken a chance. You must have been loads of fun to hang out with! j/k about that. Zero-ummm, what? I couldn't really follow your post-missing some words or something here and there. I think I get the gist of it. The terms are not excuses, but they are facts. It is good that you look out for your neighbors, no matter what your intentions. Unless you are "a stick in the mud", surely your life has had some type of suspense/excitement.

jca and AMERICANZERO, you are always quick to judge the parents. it seems like you search for the cases where something tragic happens and then attack the parents and the victims. the teenagers are lucky to be alive and yes they made a poor decision but thats what defines us as adults. my parents raised me to tell them where i went at all times and they also taught me common knowledge and wisdom. for instance, don't let anyone drive your car or don't go to a party in the middle of nowhere even if it is the "cool" thing to do but as a teenager, i can say i broke both of those rules and yes i ended up in a wreck and hurt BUT that was not my parents fault. i made an irrational decision and it was the spur of the moment sort of thing. it is a shame to think that your parents obviously didnt teach you respect for others... NOT JUST THEM.

I wonder how long it will take some plaintiff attorney to file a lawsuit against the innocent driver of the car and the go cart manufacturer? Believe it or not, someone will.
