The bark of a banyan tree intertwines into itself, with new branches weaving in and out from old branches.

The organic lines of the large trees look as if a dancer froze in the middle of a performance.

Chris Tertzagian

Chris Tertzagian wanted to transfer the inspiration she got from the banyan tree into her photographs, showing how people need and support one another.

Her black-and-white photographs are of intertwining body parts, featuring a black male and a white female. At the time, her intention was not to make a social statement, but as she was hanging her work for a show, she realized the impact her photographs would generate.

Tertzagian took a long break from photography and in the past year, picked up where she left off in college. She is now one of the featured artists in the Piccolo Spoleto 25th annual Juried Art Exhibition.

When asked what inspired her to begin creating art again, she replied, "I realized it is something that my soul needs. It's my creative expansion ... photography feeds me and I just needed to get back behind the camera."

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of her work goes to the nonprofit organization Kids With Cameras, where Tertzagian has volunteered and taught photography.
