Dorchester Council considering leaf burning ban, budget
ST. GEORGEāA stop to suburban leaf burning and one more pass at fine-tuning a tight budget face Dorchester County Council tonight.
The council will consider third reading of a controversial proposal to ban the burning of leaves and yard debris within 50 feet of a structure or property line, as well as on properties one-third of an acre or smaller.
Meanwhile, the council will consider third reading of a "bare bones" operating budget of roughly $40 million after making $8 million in cuts because of revenue shortfalls. But an unexpected $2 million boost that auditors anticipate in property tax revenue means workers might not have to take all the furlough days called for by the proposed budget.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at the Kenneth Waggoner Services Center, 201 Johnston St., St. George. Council committee meetings will take place in the hour before the meeting.
