GEORGETOWN — A South Carolina-based biofuel producer joined with the State Ports Authority Wednesday in announcing a 20-year contract at the under-used Port of Georgetown.

Carolina-Pacific will launch its wood-pellet exporting business locally in October, with the initial 66,000 metric tons of product shipped mainly to European markets as an energy source. The company will also occupy more than 100,000 square feet of warehouse space at the port.

The operation will employ as many as a dozen people in the warehouse initially plus a yet-to-be-determined number of dockworkers.

SPA Board Chairman David Posek said the occasion illustrates that the agency is committed to insuring Georgetown continues as a viable facility.

Lets hope its not too late to save Georgetown. That town is slowly dying. There are more For Sale and For Lease signs then there are stores with occupants. I can't really be sure that putting about 25 people to work with this new company will do much for Georgetown overall. Though it proabably can't hurt.
