OL Davis commits to Tigers

CLEMSON — Kalon Davis (6-5, 335) of Chester did the expected Friday and committed to Clemson while on an unofficial visit.

Davis had been favoring Clemson for months. He took the Tigers' offer over offers from Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, N.C. State, Mississippi State, South Florida, Wisconsin, Penn State, Kentucky and East Carolina.

"It feels good for me," Davis said. "I can just concentrate on my season. It just felt at home when I went there."

Davis played tackle last season but is expected to play guard this season. He's not sure where Clemson plans to use him, but he's looking forward to working under offensive line coach Brad Scott.

"I've talked to Coach Scott and have seen how he handles his practice and runs his drills and coaches them up," Davis said. "I think he can make me an outstanding player."

Davis is the ninth commitment for Clemson's 2010 class.

--Clemson golfer Charles Warren was the first and only Tiger to win an NCAA individual championship. Now, he's the first in his sport to receive the athletic department's highest award — a spot in the Ring of Honor.

Warren, a PGA Tour member, is set to become the 30th individual with his name placed on the facing of the upper deck at Clemson's Memorial Stadium. There's a tentative date of Nov. 21 set for the ceremony.

Others in the ring are some of the great athletic names in school history such as the late Banks McFadden, the only Clemson athlete with his jersey retired in two sports; football coaching great Frank Howard, who's buried in the campus cemetery next to the stadium; and women's basketball star Barbara Kennedy-Dixon, the Atlantic Coast Conference's all-time leader in career points and rebounds.
