Coroner: Man shot self by accident
Investigation shows gun in back pocket discharged, bullet hit victim in chest as he bent forward
The Post and Courier
North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey speaks to Sonya Holmes (right), mother of Dionta Cochran, and Pastor Lollita Brown of The Power of The Word Worship Center.

Dionta RaShad Cochran was killed by his own gun after it accidentally discharged in the 19-year-old's pocket, authorities said Friday. The bullet struck him in the chest while he was getting into an SUV to buy cigarettes.
Tests confirmed that the fatal round was fired from the .32-caliber pistol Cochran kept in the back pocket of his low-hanging pants, and not from an unknown shooter, as originally thought, Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten said.
"It's clear examining the clothing and trajectories and soot and bullets and guns, etc., that the gun in his back pocket actually discharged, passed through his clothing — missing both legs — and as he was bending forward in an effort to probably close the door, the bullet struck him in the chest," she said.
It's unclear what caused the gun to discharge, but it appears the round traveled through his pants and between his legs, Wooten said.
"I would say to you it's extremely rare, and in the 14-plus years I've been doing investigations countywide, I've never seen anything like this," Wooten said.
The conclusion was an unexpected twist in a case originally labeled a homicide by North Charleston police and investigated as one until Friday. Chief Jon Zumalt said when he arrived at the scene at 7680 Desmond Ave. in the Forest Hills II community, he thought it was a slaying.
"We jumped to conclusions," he said.
Investigators arrested Cochran's cousin and a friend a day later after they determined that the pair tried to hide Cochran's gun and another gun in the backyard before police arrived.
Police charged Eric Ra'shad Antonio Smith, who was staying at the house with his grandmother, with obstruction of justice after he allegedly instructed Justin Maurice Townsend to hide the guns. Smith's mother said at a bond hearing that police told her that her son, who has a conviction for third-degree burglary, was the intended target of the shooting.
Police also charged Townsend, Cochran's cousin, with possession of a stolen pistol with a removed or obliterated serial number, unlawful carrying of a pistol and possession of a pistol.
The charges against Townsend and Smith are still pending.
Zumalt and Wooten said the case was solved through constant communication between their two offices.
"Their collaborative efforts helped to start piecing this together," Wooten said. "I'm very pleased the family got a truthful answer."
Mayor Keith Summey joined Zumalt and Wooten in crediting Cochran's mother, Sonya Holmes, with cooperating with investigators and quelling any thoughts of seeking revenge against whoever might have shot her son.
"The loss of any member of your family is horrible, and to think that they died at the hands of someone else is even worse," Mayor Keith Summey said. "I'm relieved for her that it was an accident and that nobody had something against her son and was trying to take his life."
Holmes declined to speak, but Lollita Brown, Holmes' pastor at The Power of The Word Worship Center, said Cochran was a good person who had plans to join the military after overcoming problems in his life.
"He was a very outgoing young man; he was very sweet," Brown said. "He was a part of our youth ministry. Always wanted to do the right thing. Yes, he had some trouble in the past, but when he came out, he had his head on right."
Cochran spent 10 months in prison after a conviction for strong-arm robbery. He was released in April.
On June 5, he was arrested and accused of shooting a firearm in West Ashley.
Police heard gunfire about 1:30 p.m. in the area of Rochelle and Belgrade avenues and received a report of someone firing a gun into the air on Rochelle Avenue and then leaving in a white SUV.
A police report said that officers stopped a Ford Explorer and inside found Cochran and his cousin, Townsend. It said a witness identified Cochran as the person who fired the gun.
Cochran was charged with discharging a firearm, the report said.

How can you expect that pastor to mentor the kids in her church into following the right path and doing the right things, when she is as deluded and flat-out wrong as she is about what a good person is and does? As a matter of fact, comments like she made about this gun-toting criminal are dangerous, because younger, more impressionable children in her church will think that committing robberies, shooting firearms randomly in neighborhoods, and carrying guns, are what "good" people do, because that's what this seriously gullible pastor said.

There is an age limit to join the military.
"He was a very outgoing young man; he was very sweet," Brown said. "He was a part of our youth ministry. Always wanted to do the right thing. Yes, he had some trouble in the past, but when he came out, he had his head on right."
It appears he did not have his head on right.

The following is a direct quote from the Urban Dictionary with asterisks added by me:
"bust a sag"
To wear one's trousers around the hips instead of the waist, thus exposing the top of the underwear. Often the pants will be purposely baggy and oversize to accomplish the "sag." Common in urban and hip hop culture in the late 90s.
A frequently told urban legend purports that the style originated in correctional facilities where males that were amenable to being approached for a*** s*x would wear their pants in this fashion.
Used in a sentence:
If my daughter brings home a boyfriend that's busting a sag, I swear to god I will nail-gun his pants to his hips.

Wow. Now that mysterious bullet in the JFK assassination has some competition.
And I don't understand the point of writing anything remotely good about this young man in the piece. He was a gangbanger. Why the heck write anything said by his pastor about how "sweet" he was? Sets a fantastic example for the kids. "Hey, kids! You can wear saggy pants that make you look lazy, unsafely carry unregistered guns around, and as long as you BS your pastor, they'll put in a great word for you after you're dead from being a gangbanger."
Why not just leave it at the facts instead of trying to embellish them with absolutely worthless fluff. Why should any law-abiding citizen (the ones who actually read this paper) give 2 peanuts about this idiot? Are we supposed to be sympathetic because he was a gangbanger but the pastor says he was a "sweet kid?" He wasn't. And I don't appreciate even the suggestion that he was a "sweet kid" even if the Pope says he is. It's an insult to our society and one of the main reasons it's going into the toilet. Too much acceptance and justification of totally unacceptable behavior.

Relax,
We have to stop making excuses in the African American community. Pres Obama spoke at the 100th Anniversary of the NAACP and told them the same thing. Dionta was a career criminal and was only 19 years old. He was carrying a gun and if I read the story right it looks like they were about to murder someone.
There are thousands of kids that live in the hood that decide not to go down the road of drugs, alcohol, murder, robbery, etc. They are doing positive things everyday. It also sounds like Dionta had positive influences in his life since he was in the youth ministry and went to church. So HE decided to go down that road! Who should be blamed for HIS actions?
I just hope something good can come out of his senseless and tragic death like his family members and friends getting their lives together. If this doesn't change their ways, I don't know what will. My condolences to the mother again.

Does that make me a saint? No. Everyone has done something wrong before but not to that extreme. To all young people out there, If you feel the need to have an illegal gun on your person there is something wrong with the way you are living your life. If you feel the need to have a gun for your safety, go get a concealed weapon permit. If they reject you for any reason, you do not need to carry a gun.

I agree with you @Relaxed85, but I'll follow up with a missing ingredient, RACISM! Yes, racism at best. I'm NOT trying to DEFEND or condone the actions of Dionta Cochran, but so many of these so called "christian" religious right hypocrites rejoices in ones demise, especially when they are of the BLACK race! I agree this young man should NOT have had a concealed weapon on him, especially having a criminal record. For you fine so called christians and hypocrites who rejoices in one's death, whether christian or sinner, In the TRUE christian bible that I read and try to practice from it states that "If a man or woman be overtaken in a FAULT, You which are SPIRITUAL, restore such an one in the spirit of MEEKNESS, considering THYSELF, lest THOU ALSO BE TEMPTED", Galatians 6:1. So there you have it my so called "CHRISTIAN" Brothers and Sisters! For those chastising and scolding Pastor Brown for her statement and support of the family needs to EXAMINE their ownselves. On a recent article, yesterday to be exact, there was a WHITE Pastor in Summerville caught in the act of Child PORNOGRAPHY, but yet many of those chastising Pastor Brown did NOT chastise this "PASTOR" or care to comment about his Pedophile actions with YOUNG CHILDREN! WHY? Because he is WHITE and Pastor Brown is BLACK! I'll answer it for you, a resounding YES! How many of you rejoicing in his death in fact have or had a son, daughter, brother, sister, cousin, aunt, uncle, or even mom or dad for that matter who was or in fact involve in this type of crime or similar? Would you care to take inventory? I'll reserve that for you to decide and be HONEST with yourself!

"Lollita Brown, Holmes' pastor at The Power of The Word Worship Center, said Cochran was a good person who had plans to join the military after overcoming problems in his life."
The problem with this statement is not his age as many people certainly join the military after the age of 19, but that when you enter, your criminal record is checked. What branch of the military did he plan to join. Having spent 10 months in jail for strong-armed robbery, the military would be hesitant to take thsi character. He absolutely would not have gotten into the Air Force or the Marine Corps with this record. The Army is a possibility as they are not so tight on recruiting restrictions but even they draw a limit when it comes to a persons criminal record. I'm pretty sure there's no waiver for strong armed robbery.

Relax,
We have to stop making excuses in the African American community. Pres Obama spoke at the 100th Anniversary of the NAACP and told them the same thing. Dionta was a career criminal and was only 19 years old. He was carrying a gun and if I read the story right it looks like they were about to murder someone.
I can't speak for Relax @burton, but I don't see where they are making EXCUSES for Dionta Cochran. I believe along with Relax that the RACIST comments from mostly Bigoted so called religious "christian" people REJOICING in someone's demise, especially when they are African_Americans! I'm not one to make EXCUSES and if anyone read my posts they will see in the clear where I stand on issues pertaining to the Black community as a whole. I see the unfair and callous remarks towards Pastor Brown for speaking some good about this young man, yet they prefer to overlook the pedophile actions of a White Pastor mentioned yesterday concerning Child Ponography! Unless I stand to be corrected, I did NOT read where he was getting ready to "murder" someone. Pastor Brown did NOT overlook the fact that he had some previous and current problems either! Dionta Cochran is a statistic now, but I also hope and pray that young and old people, especially African-Americans can learn a valuable lesson from this and resort to the more POSITIVE vs. NEGATIVE things in life. Some ways to beat that rap and stereotype is getting an education, self-determination, remaining positive, focused, and by implanting in your mind that the only person that can PREVENT you from being a SUCCESS or SUCCESSFUL is YOURSELF!

There are 10 year olds who hunt and know firearm safety. This one, however, was apparently in need of supervision and did not have it. One should always unload his/her weapon before climbing into or down from a deer stand.
I posted a few weeks ago that I am sick to my stomach over the murder of Jermel Brown. He was innocent and not involved with criminals. I have never said that Cochran deserved to die; however, a short life span appears to be a possible or even probable consequence of his life style, much the same as someone who drives drunk, deals drugs, associates with other illegally armed convicts or plays chicken with trains.

Ms. Brown quoth: "Cochran was a good person who had plans to join the military after overcoming problems in his life."
With all due respect, let's talk about overcoming. My mother "overcame problems in [her] life." She was raised in neglect and poverty so abject her teeth rotted from her head. She was beaten. She started cropping tobacco at 13 so she could eat. She dropped out of school to work full-time to raise her youngest brother. I've seen the house she was raised in--I wouldn't allow livestock to live there. This is not family myth or lore--this is fact.
Fast forward 65 years. She has a lovely home, devoted children, many friends and all the books she can read. She volunteers at her church and votes in every election. THAT, Ms. Brown, is "overcoming problems."

oh the race thing..... those who call racism are the reason for racism. the naacp is just as much a cause of racism as any other pro-race organization. martin luther king jr had dreams of EQUALITY. allowing one race to have their own college's, beauty pagents, phonebooks, tv channles, etc etc while yelling at and suing other races for trying the same is not EQUALITY and i believe MLK would be pissed if he was still alive.
the white kid that fell from the tree stand was not a mennace to society (yet).
he was not carrying a gun unlawfuly.
he had not commited armed robbery in his youth.
he was not busting a sag or acting as if he were playing some gangsta rapper in a movie becuase it looks cool.
the fact is this dbag got what he deserved.. and yes, deserved. it doesn't matter if he was black or white. it matters that his own actions caused his own death.

She is in pain for losing her child..but she knows that the lord took him before he takes some innocent persons life. I spent 23 years in the army, and have a degree in "Sports and Health Science." What do you have? And yes, I remember the redneck remark; still stand by it. So go ahead and drive your pick-up trucks with that Rebel flag sticker on the back window, and gun rack inside. We all know who the violent individuals are; just check he history books. Change has come and will continue to happen. So, either get on board, or get out of the way. I remember watching clips of a Sarah Palin rally; which took placed in Fla. I remember how all those bama's were saying all those hateful thing about a US Senator and then Presidential contender; even echo-ing "Kill him." Now I ask, what did he did too them? Nothing!!! So yes, when you guy's show compassion for one family and nothing but laughter for the other; then you all deserved to be called bama's and rednecks. Why? Because you and yours saw color in the demise of these two individuals; both should be seen as humans. So if the shoe fits wear it and wear well. WOW. There is no denying the obvious about this young man. Served time for conviction for strong-arm robbery, was carrying a HANDGUN, while a convicted felon (and even if he were not convicted, I believe you have to be 21 to have a handgun).
He had 'plans' to join the military and was part of the youth ministry - maybe he was trying to work out his life, but was failing to do so. I dont know, I cant judge his heart.
Now, once again I am breaking my 'dont comment on these stories' rule. But, once again, I can not understand that the obvious 'joy' that some of the many posters laughing at this tragic event are getting because this young man shot himself by accident. Its not funny, its not Darwinism, its tragice, tfirst that he was living the way he was a second, that many of the commenters find this funny and seem to be 'happy' with the outcome.
AND the perception is that you that find it funny, think that way because you can sit there and say; Black on Black crimes, another black thug --- BLACK BLACK BLACK. Does that mean because he was black, he was somehow ~less~ human?
The bigger tragedy being the second - findiing it funny. You know dang weel that other young 'thugs' are reading this stuff and maybe even the family and pastor.
- Does anyone for moment consider that the above comments could justify the black communities perception of many whites as uncaring about the black community? So why should the black community even trust the leadership of whites that are voted in as Mayor or sheriff? Or trust LE?
I dont know man, it is truly a sick mind that finds the outcome of this young man's life as funny.
Sure, he caused his death and led the life he did, no excuses.
But what are the excuses of those that think this is a "GOOD" ending to a "WORTHLESS" life?

Black reign, perhaps I missed any comments that indicated that whites don't care about the black community? Please point them out to me in this comments section. Thanks. Otherwise, you are ascribing the wrong motives to people here, and time is long past for that to stop.
Additionally, I don't need to provide an "excuse" for my belief that society is much better off without an armed felon who victimized society, and was in the process of committing another felony when he was responsible for the loss of his own life. I hope more repeat-offender violent felons are removed from society. However it happens is of no concern to me, as long as it doesn't harm any innocent people, and as long as it is done as cheaply as possible.
And I hope that pastor is reading this, so that she can understand that the correct response to this criminal's death is not to call him "sweet" or "good" or to say he "was on the right track;" the correct response is to point to his death and teach her church members that the path he took leads to death and prison, and others need to make better choices.

Cochran spent 10 months in prison after a conviction for strong-arm robbery. He was released in April.
On June 5, he was arrested and accused of shooting a firearm in West Ashley.
====================================
I find these comment troubling because they do nothing to address the real problem which is a whole generation of youths with no concrete values and no moral compass to guide themselves by.
The stupid racists comments by both camps are in most cases without merit.
This young man died as a result of many factors, including but not limited to, lack of a cohesive family unit, peers with the same disadvantage, lack of strict discipline in the school system, the failed policies of the War on Poverty, mentally and morally degrading programming on VH1, MTV, and especially BET which emphasizes the gangsta rap, hip hop life style as "cool".
Those claiming that all us "rednecks" are racist morons need to turn their attention inward and seek resolutions to the problems affecting members of their own community and quit behaving like racists morons.

I say we shouldn't release what really happened! Now those morons will stop carrying their pistols in their pockets where they can shoot themselves! Also, a one shot kill with a .32 is something else too. What'd it take that attorney at the AA meeting when that low-slung pants wearing idiot came in there waving a gun around, 3, 4 shots? That guy made it a block or so, right? Bam! Dead on Driveway. What a shot!
Funny? Heck yeah! He'd already been in jail once for 10 months. We see how well that worked! He got busted about 2 months after he got out. If he really wanted to join the military he would have discussed with the judge, his attorney, which I and YOU paid for, about it and been in basic training instead of shooting off guns and his mouth around Charleston as soon as he got out.
I'll give the pastor a pass, she's just passing on her 'wishful thinking fixes things' policy that makes the parents of these hoodlums feel better when they end up dead or in for life. She'll answer one day to her 'Boss' as to why she never made a real difference in this young man's life if she was ever truly able to. I suspect not after an armed robbery conviction and his other 'alleged' crimes.
Lastly, this is the type of person that has me carrying a cocked and locked .45 and looking real hard at any black youth with baggy pants and an SUV... (mine's in a holster and I've got papers saying it's ok to be there, but then again, I never committed armed robbery and know how to wear my pants)

BlackReign had a couple of mistakes. The following is one "I believe you have to be 21 to have a handgun". Credit given to BR for the "I believe" qualification.
In the vast majority of states the legal age for owning a handgun is 18. You cannot buy a new handgun until you are 21 but you can legally purchase one from a private person at age 18. The federal law is not violated by either the buyer or the seller in this case.
The federal law prohibits licensed dealers (holders of a FFL) from selling handguns or handgun ammo to someone under 21 but there is no such restriction on private sales. Most states do not have an additional age restriction.
The thug who got himself killed ignored a basic tennet of firearms safety which is never carry a pistol without a holster. Pocket holsters are available that help keep the pistol orientated (pointed) the correct direction and cover the trigger. That "cover the trigger" thing is real important.
Many will doubt me on the age thing but I have a source that is hard to deny. The US Attorney over the Steve McNair killing stated 7-17-09 that those 18 through 20 who buy handguns in a private transaction own their guns legally. His name is Edward Yarbrough and you can goggle it to you heart's content. That said if the thug had a felony record he could not legally touch a firearm of any kind. And regardless of his race, he was a thug.
Now, please say my name slowly.
Yours truly: E. Zach Lee-Wright

Don't you know what " saggin' " spelt backwards is? Then you will get to the bottom of this "crime". Maybe this will teach the gangsta thugs a lesson that flirting with the gangsta "lifestyle" can kill you.
