Man killed in Thursday night crash

staff report
Friday, July 17, 2009

A 33-year-old man died Thursday night after a two-car crash on Savannah Highway.

Michael Willis of Charleston was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision at Savannah Highway and Markfield Drive about 9:15 p.m., Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said.

Authorities say Willis was a passenger in a Honda Accord that collided with a black Chevy Tahoe.

The Honda was pinned against a telephone pole. The driver of the Honda was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Medical University Hospital.

The wreck is under investigation.

It's unbelievable to me that no matter how many wrecks and traffic deaths there are in this area that people continue to drive carelessly and recklessly. People are just unbelievably stupid, inconsiderate and disrespectful. If there were more consequences for the people who cause these wrecks perhaps others would think about their actions.

Are you seriously writing this? Last night I lost a friend in Michael Willis and his parents are grieving over this tragedy. You use the words stupid and disrespectful to describe this family's son who was killed? More consequences? Is death not the ultimate consequence? Put yourself in the family's shoes....and read what you wrote again. Who is stupid, inconsiderate, and disrespectful now?

May Michael rest in peace.

I'm here to tell ya, I was in the area of the Citadel Mall last night at exactly this time. The rain was HORRENDOUS. So many people on 526 had their flashers on and were driving 30 MPH or less. Many people were pulled over all the way up to and past Dorchester Road. It was bad. I don't think that this was careless driving as much as caused by inclement weather. Of course, time could tell differently, but that's my opinion.

If I hadn't needed to be out in that, I'd never have been.

3wes, Condolences regarding your friend, but I do believe numbersman was referring to the driver that caused the accident, not the passenger that was killed.

Where does it say that there was careless and reckless (an ironic use of the word, no?) driving involved?

Michael and I were very close at one time - for years, but many years ago. I remember how smart I thought he was when I met him on the first day of 8th grade - when I had just moved from NJ to SC. We grew apart as he moved more and more into things that were not for me, but I tried to keep in touch with him over the years until we had so little in common. Jason Mackey kept me up to date on Michael the best that he could, and then I really lost touch of him. I feel just awful about what has happened. Michael's death is a tragedy and loss on so many levels. I know the amazing person that Michael was and could be... !!! I will always remember him and love him! It goes without saying that he will be missed.

My condolences to his family. As Wesley said, Michael, rest in peace.

With deepest sympathy for your loss,

Stacey Grabiner-Berkle

This is mainly for the first 1st comment that was posted...I don't understand how you can write something that is so inconsiderate, disrepectful and just plan stupid esp. not knowing all the facts of what happened in the accident. Accidents happen even when your not being careless or wreckless.

They're called accidents for a reason. Sometimes these things just happen. Without knowing any details whatsoever it's a little quick to start the name calling.

Wes and Stacey, thank you for standing up and making it known that Michael was in fact a dear friend and not a statistic. While it has been many years since we have been in contact, it feels as if it was yesterday when we were all either fishing or riding our bikes to and from our respective homes. Michael was a very dear and close childhood friend and, despite losing contact, his death hits very close to home. May he rest in peace and may the driver be granted a very speedy recovery.

With great sadness and the deepest of sympathies to the Willis family,

Joshua Steinert

I just wanted to say that Michael was a real good friend to me growing up, he and Charles Lamm were my best friends when I lived in Charleston. I am devastated for all of us who knew Michael and had the wonderful chance to be his friend. He was a wonderful person. I a praying for April and Michael's son River who must be hurting so bad right now.
I also wanted to say how great is is to see all the friends on here taking up for Michael on here. Who registers just to talk bad about someone who has passed away, and the driver who they say they are speaking about is in MUSC fighting for his life. Gregg get better soon!
RIP Michael and thank you for all you did for me and for being my friend!I love you!

Most likely the cause will be talking on the cell phone and not paying attention. Too bad the traffic got so backed up.

I hate to hear of tragedies like this. I too knew Michael, and am praying for his and for Gregg's family. I cannot imagine what they are going through in a time like this. Please keep the negative thoughts to yourself - these families need prayers and positive thoughts from us all.

My deepest sympathy,
Jennifer M.T.

Michael was a great friend, and though we haven't hung out together in years...those memories will be with me forever! Forget those who comment to spark reaction from those who are grieving. He was such a great guy! We all love and miss you, Michael! I'll never forget that smile!
