A Florida woman died early this morning after her car struck several trees in the median of Interstate 95 in Colleton County. Kathleen Kline was pronounced dead 20 minutes after arriving at the emergency room.

WALTERBORO — A Florida woman died early Thursday after her car struck several trees in the median of Interstate 95 in Colleton County.

Kathleen Lynn Kline, 38, of Lake Worth was pronounced dead at the Colleton Medical Center shortly after the 5:15 a.m. wreck, authorities said.

The wreck occurred about seven miles south of Dorchester County, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Beres said that Kline was northbound on the interstate when her 1997 Mercury ran off the right side of the road. She over-corrected, causing the car to cross both lanes and crash into trees in the median, he said.

Barry McRoy, director of Colleton County Fire and Rescue, said Kline was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but the damage to the car was severe.

He said rescue crews were able to remove her from the car and take her to the hospital while trying to resuscitate her.

Assistant Coroner Richard Carter said Kline was traveling through South Carolina to visit her sister.

Kline was pronounced dead at 6:10 a.m., Carter. She died of head trauma, he said.
