So maybe you're not the tool-belt-wearing type. Habitat for Humanity still would like your help with next year's Women Build.
The Charleston affiliate is forming a Women Build Leadership Team to prepare for the weeklong event set for May. Volunteers will work primarily on fundraising and bringing awareness to the area's housing needs and the Women Build project.
Habitat affiliates across the country hold Women Build events the week before Mother's Day each year in an effort to bring in more female volunteers. More than 7,000 women participated in about 200 events this year.
Charleston Habitat had not held a Women Build event in five years until a couple of months ago, when it renovated the home of a disabled woman in North Charles- ton.
Now, it's gearing up to build an entire house for a family in need and wants more women to take part.
"I think a lot of women want to really get out and give their time to help out in the community," said Kayla Droney. director of development. "This is a great way to get involved."
The Women Build Leadership Team's first meeting is 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at Sunfire Grill and Bistro, 1090 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. The team will meet monthly.
The other local affiliates, Dorchester and Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, also welcome volunteers to help out in the months leading up to their Women Build projects.
Their committees will begin meeting in the fall, according to Dorchester's executive director, Star Callaway, and Sea Island's outreach assistant, Molly Coffey.
About 400 Lowcountry women participated in the Women Build events organized by the three local affiliates this year.
