A woman was killed early Thursday when her car struck a tree in the median of Interstate 95 in Colleton County.

WALTERBORO — A Florida woman died early this morning after her car struck a tree in the median of Interstate 95 in Colleton County.

The wreck occurred at 5:30 a.m. at mile marker 61, about seven miles south of Dorchester County, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Beres said the driver was going north on the interstate when her 1997 Mercury ran off the right side of the road. She over-corrected, causing the car to cross both lanes and into a median where it struck a tree.

Authorities have not yet released the woman's name.

Editor's note: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly stated that the woman who was killed was pregnant. The Post and Courier regrets the error.

I like you Mainer Mike - good solid reporting, with none of that nonsense dribble that I'm used to hearing. Keep up the good work!

What a tragedy.

Another fatal wreck where someone "over-corrected" and crossed back across the road. "Over-correcting" has got be the most under-recognized preventable road danger there is. Often it takes the lives of the driver, passengers and others.

If you drift off the road, take your foot off the gas. If your wheels are on two different surfaces (dirt and pavement), any sharp turn or hard braking will cause complete loss of control. After you have the vehicle fully under control, get back on the road.

I've got 15 years of driving experience (legally on roads). I've raced go-karts, dragsters (track and street) and racecars (both dirt track and paved). In addition, I've competed in rock crawling, and have spent plenty of time 4-wheeling in mud, motorcycles and lately flying. It's easy to explain the technique of getting out of a "over-correcting" situation, but much more difficult to actually do it - especially at 5:30 am, in the dark on I-95 at speeds probably close to 80 mph.

Over correcting is almost always a result of being surprised. You are usually surprised when you aren't paying attention to the road. When drivers are paying attention, they are much less likely to overcorrect.

It's a terrible tragedy though.

I always hate to hear that someone has died on our roads and highways because of carelessness, but when and unborn child is involved, it really hurts. This baby will never have a chance for a life because of a tragic accident.

Makes me wonder though, had this woman been driving all night? Could she have nodded off at the wheel and jerked awake? This could have been the supprise element that caused her to wreck.

I was thinking that too bornin43.

Terrible terrible tragedy. My wife is 8 months pregnant and I can't imagine the pain this family is going through. Reminds you that you can be on cloud nine one second and hit rock bottom the next second.

I heard that she was not pregnant after all. Family confirmed that she was not pregnant. Abdominal injuries can cause your stomach area to bloat out. Ultra sounds, cat scans and MRI's didn't show any fetus either. I am still waiting for confirmation on my hearings.
