Father sentenced for injuring baby

Thursday, July 9, 2009

SPARTANBURG — A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for fracturing his infant's skull by squeezing his head between his biceps and chest.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported Wednesday that 26-year-old Brian Hollingworth of Lyman pleaded guilty to felony child abuse for the fractured skull and ribs.

Hollingworth took his 23-day-old son to a Greer hospital in May 2008 for seizures. Prosecutors said he admitted injuring the child after failing a lie detector test.

Deputies said he admitted squeezing the baby's head and later breaking his son's ribs when he grabbed and squeezed his chest.

The baby has recovered and is in a relative's care with two young brothers.

He needs to be neutered as well. Not exactly father material.

I just don't understand these child abuse cases. Nothing would ever possess to me to hurt a child. I would probably kill myself after realizing what I had done. I wonder why this wasn't considered attempted murder. Do you think he was just testing his strength on his own child?
