Mariah meets all kinds of characters tending bar at East Bay Meeting House

By Denise K. James

Regular customers of the East Bay Meeting House know Mariah Sweezey for her charming presence behind the bar and her "martini shake wrist," according to the regulars. Originally from Northern Ohio, Mariah makes the atmosphere of the East Bay Meeting House bar even cozier with her easy sense of humor and her knack for remembering names. Ask her to make you something special the next time you visit, and you won't be disappointed.

Q. How long have you been at The East Bay Meeting House?

A. For about a year.

Q. What's the best thing about working here?

A. I didn't know anyone when I moved to Charleston, and The EBMH has provided me with my entire social network! I've met so many people here, and they've mostly all become my friends.

Q. Do you have a background in tending bar?

A. Since I've been working I've always been a server or bartender. I've found that it's the best way to make a decent amount of money in a short amount of time.

Q. Your signature drink to make?

A. I've made a "ginger martini" that people have asked for again. It's made with this Ginger Liqueur that I've been experimenting with.

Q. What's your own favorite summer cocktail?

A. I love a good gin and tonic.

Q. What's the worst pick-up trick you've ever experienced?

A. Someone once wrote down his salary on a piece of paper and slid it across the table top to me. It was not enough, needless to say.

Q. Have you ever fallen in love while tending bar?

A. No — not even remotely. That would be nice though. That would be a good perk to the job.

Q. Best holiday to be at the Bar?

A. Thanksgiving Eve. No one has to work the next day and you would be amazed how many people show up to drink after putting up with the family for too long.
