Small Columbia-area college to double in size

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

COLUMBIA - A small Christian college in South Carolina plans to double the size of its campus over the next few years and increase enrollment.

The State newspaper reported Wednesday that Columbia International University received approval this week from city officials to double its campus to 80 acres. The 87-year-old school plans to add more student housing and classrooms and install playing fields for intercollegiate sports. The expansion would allow the private, nondenominational school of about 1,000 students to enroll an additional 250.

President William Jones says the expansion will also enable the school, founded as Columbia Bible College, to add professional degrees to its 19 undergraduate theological degrees.

Officials say he first phase could start in November.
