S.C. GOP leaders censure Sanford

Committee vote falls short of urging his resignation

COLUMBIA — Republicans across South Carolina voted Monday to censure Gov. Mark Sanford following his recently disclosed extramarital affair and absence from office while visiting his mistress in Argentina.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford

The vote followed an evening conference call among state GOP executive committee members from the state's 46 counties, a call that lasted more than three hours. The decision was a sort of a middle ground — by no means a show of support but one that fell short of a call for his resignation.

Twenty-two members of the committee voted on the formal reprimand of Sanford. Ten voted to ask him to resign, while nine voted to support the governor.

Sanford said in a statement that he appreciates the party's position and will continue to work to earn back its trust.

Charleston County GOP Chair Lin Bennett, who participated in the call, said Sanford violated the public trust and what the party stands for.

"We just feel the governor's actions were not in conformance with our basic core values and principles," she said. "This was difficult on everyone out there. The governor broke their hearts, and he did breach their trust."

She hoped the party's decision will allow Sanford and the rest of the state to refocus attention on South Carolina's problems, which include one of the nation's highest unemployment rates.

Earlier Monday, Sanford stopped by the Port of Charleston but left without a public comment about the latest efforts to prevent terrorism. Some observers wondered if that harkened to a new approach to his job, an approach that would rely less on his use of the bully pulpit to push his agenda.

They noted his public appearances might be more of a distraction as they draw questions away from policy and to his sex life.

Clemson University political science professor Dave Woodard said a disappearance from the public radar will likely be Sanford's modus operandi for the next 18 months that he's in office.

"You're not going to have business as usual," Woodard said.

Sanford also could be seen as an unwelcome distraction for the Republican Party and will likely hurt the ability to raise money.

Immediate past GOP Chairman Katon Dawson said Republicans in South Carolina are embarrassed by Sanford. Dawson asked Sanford to give the party some of his campaign money because the governor's recent actions made it harder on the GOP to raise cash.

Dawson said Sanford asked for a little room to breathe and has not responded.

Sanford has $1.7 million left in campaign money. The governor's office would not comment on what the governor plans to do with the cash. He is barred by state law from seeking a third term as governor, but he could decide to run for another office.

Woodard said he does not expect Sanford to bend. The governor's political career has been a march off the beaten path, he said.

The State Law Enforcement Division cleared Sanford last week of misuse of public money. The agency reviewed five trips the governor had during which he met with his mistress Maria Belen Chapur in Argentina and New York.

Sanford spent time with Chapur while in Argentina in June 2008 for a state commerce trip. The Commerce Department had originally planned the trip for Brazil but Sanford requested the agency extend the mission to include Argentina. Last week, Sanford repaid the state about $3,000 for the Argentine leg of the tip.

First lady Jenny Sanford also tried Monday to get back to a regular summertime rhythm.

She greeted a reporter for The Post and Courier at her Sullivan's Island home but said it was a bad time to talk because she was making lunch with her children.

University of South Carolina political science professor Blease Graham said Sanford might be able to survive politically, too. He just has to get back on message.

"It's a Humpty Dumpty state of normalcy, having fallen off the wall," Graham said. "I suppose normalcy is putting things put back together again as best they can be."

The Resolution

The censure resolution passed by the State Executive Committee read:

"Whereas, the South Carolina Republican Party adopts this Resolution of Censure as a unified expression of the Party's opinion in the recent matter relating to Governor Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr.; and

"Whereas, the South Carolina Republican Party adheres to a set of core principles and beliefs, primarily but not exclusively expressed in our Platform; and

"Whereas, the revelations regarding Governor Sanford's private and public conduct demonstrate repeated failures to act in accordance with these core principles and beliefs; and

"Whereas, Governor Sanford's conduct, in addition to falling below the standards expected of Republican elected officials, has breached the public's trust and confidence in his ability to effectively perform the duties of his office; and

"Whereas, a formal admonishment by the South Carolina Republican Party is appropriate and necessary and, barring further revelations, will be the Party's last word on the matter;

"Therefore, be it resolved, that the South Carolina Republican Party does, with great regret, censure Governor Mark Sanford for his recent conduct."

Statement from SCGOP Chairman Karen Floyd on censure of Governor Mark Sanford

COLUMBIA - South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Karen Floyd tonight released the following statement after the South Carolina Republican Party State Executive Committee voted to censure Governor Mark Sanford:

"The events of the past two weeks have been as divisive as they have been disappointing for Republicans. But today has brought a large measure of resolution to a sad chapter in our State Party's history. Republicans came together to speak with a unified voice, and now is the time for healing.

"Now is the time for healing for the Sanford family. We must pray for them - Mark, Jenny and their four beautiful boys. Now is the time for healing for the Republican Party. We must hold true to our core beliefs and re-commit to being Republican now more than ever before. And now is the time for healing for our great State.

"The task ahead of us is tall. But as Ronald Reagan said, the best days are ahead of us. We are now united and we pledge to focus our energy and efforts on finding conservative solutions to the challenges facing South Carolina."

Paul Bowers and The Associated Press contributed.

Lloyd,

Perhaps you are being a little to extreme. I have long been a supporter of Gov Snaford until the reports of his affair. Of course I cannot condone that. What gets me is the majority of the people calling for his head are the same people that felt we should cut President Clinton a break with is affairs. I agreed taht Clinton should have been removed from office then so I cannot be a hypocrite and say that Sanford should not be punished. However, the extenive investigations have found that Gov Sanford paid for his affairs out of his own pocket. It caused no direct negative effects to the people of SC. Again, I agree that he should be punished. He should resign and take the time to focus on his family. I am a REAL Christian (which you obviously don't beleive in) and belive in forgiveness and I don't feel he warrants the verbal bashing and threats he has received. But he should resign. He has been a good governor until now but the time has come.

Nicki,
The people who supported Clinton aren't hypocrites for calling for Sanford's resignation, we're Christians who believe in Exodus' "Eye for an Eye" part of the Bible.
Sanford called for Clinton's resignation, his supporters are calling for Sanford's. Simple.
Repaying $$$ after you get caught is still stealing, lying about your whereabouts, was irresponsible and had more of an impact on his constituants than Clinton getting some on the side while he was working 18 hour days.

Judge him solely on his dereliction of official duties and his amoral actions - going back - by our inept Governor's own admissions - over eight years.

Which means his entire campaign and election as our governor was a discredited farse. A joke. A lie. He LIED in order to secure the office of governor - stating he was a loving, caring, God fearing Christian who was monogomously dedicated ONLY to his wife.

He LIED about everything he was - and as such our state needs to DEMAND he resign. I certainly never would have voted for him if he had been honest about who he truly was eight years ago.

Nothing justifies lying to the people in order to further yourself opportunistically - nothing.

RESIGN Sanford. RESIGN.

it's nickl not nicki, and they are hypocrites. I believe that Sanford should resign. He did not lie about his whereabouts. He didn't tell anyone at all where he was going. They ASSUMED that he went to the mountains and that's what his people told everybody. What he did had NO impact on the people of SC and if you beleive that Clinton's affair had less effect on the country than you are grossly negilent in your understanding of the Office of the President. And like I said, yes Sanford called for Clinton's resignation, and he should resign as well. What my problem is, is with the people that are screaming for Sanford's head on a platter when his actions did not harm them in anyway, who with straightfaces condoned President Clinton's inexcusible actions. I beleive that all elected officials should hold themselves to a high moral standard. Gov. Sanford was a good Gov. but he made a mistake that he should resign because of. But, sadly, as polls have showed, many of these same loud advocates for his removal didn't know enough about the state government to even be able to tell you who the Govorner was until they were told he'd had an affair. His actions cost the State nothing. The investigations concluded that he did in fact pay for his trips out of his own pocket. Yes the affair started while he was technically on tax payers dollar and that is what he has paid back but he did not orginally go to Argintina with the intent of having an affair and therefore it was not truely stealing. He went there on a bus trip. Got mixed up in something he shouldn't and then gave back the money that was spent for that bus trip because of his mistake.

Time to reevaluate "family values" because religious SC residents are to preoccuplied w/sex and politics mix. It's become the National Enquirer mentality. Just a big circus! Religion weakens a man's mind and replaces it with the "brain of God". Hence, judgement errors are made by those (in SC) who talk TOO much about the bible. A bunch of hypocritical people you are! Our Governor is ONLY guilty of being MIA. Period. There's only ONE reason a man has a mistress. And it's with wife not keeping her part of the togetherness thru-out their life. That's right; First attraction is and will always be the same thru-out the marriage and must be maintained. Atleast Mrs Sanford has opened her mind and is willing to try to bring back a "true" marriaged. One that shares all thoughts and actions. Now, let's hope we can get onto real journalism. Our culture as it's today will not exist 30to50 yrs from now. Is that what you want? Wake up and change w/ the times so are grandkids/great grandkids will have the culture we know today.

Republican Party reprimanded Sanfraud for secretly leaving the state to visit his lover in Argentina.

Two weeks ago, Sanfraud's whereabouts became a high-profile mystery as his staff struggled to explain the governor's absence. Sanford turned off both his private cell phone and state-issued cell phone for days. It later was revealed Sanford went on a secret trip to Buenos Aires to visit his lover.

Sanfraud was not in regular communication with his staff and did not turn over power to the lieutenant governor while he was gone. He did not respond to text messages or voice messages left by law enforcement officials.

Sanford has said he misled his staff to believe he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Sir, did you plan a trip out of the country for ten days and not tell anyone where you were going? uh uh uh ...that was my fault ... uh uh uh ...wait let me finish...

Sir, upon your return from Argentina, did you lie about all the facts and circumstances surrounding your trip? ...uh uh uh ...That was my fault ...uh uh uh ...wait let me finish...

Sir, how long has this been going on? uh uh uh ...three times, no wait, I think it's more like five times, no wait ...I think it's seven times ...oh oh oh ...no, it' really been eight years ... WAIT, in 1995, there was that trip to Chile, don't forget about that one ...that would make it about fourteen years.

Sir, is that everything? YEP, that's all of it!

Sir, when do plan to stop lying about all of this? uh uh uh ... If you guys stop asking me questions ...uh uh uh ...well ...then, I'll stop lying to you. BTW, you will never be able to pin anything on me. Catch me if you can, and by the way ...uh uh uh ...I still have frequent flier miles left ....hahahahaheheheheh .... ¡Adios Amigos! ...arrivederci !!!! see ya South of the Border ...you bunch of peckerheads, who needs ya anyway.

Sanford will be the same governor that he has been for his whole time in office - ineffective. Basically, his entire agenda has been to destroy public education, have the state pay for rich kids to go to private schools and make sure that corporations and the uber - wealthy pay even less taxes than they now pay. While he takes whirlwind "development trips", the Port is leaking business like a sieve, the port of Savannah gains business and size (some of that property curiously close to land that is owned by the governor's family and friends, and our unemployment rate rivals Michigan's.

The man should not be removed because he violated some made up "Christian " rule book. He should have been voted out in 06 because he is a bad and inept governor. You chose to keep him. It is too late for him to resign to maintain any dignity. He can sit in his office for a year and a half now, make calls to all those wealthy former allies of his, he has been dropped like a handful of cow droppings. It will be lonely, but at least he will not be able to obstruct anymore attempts to educate our children and put our adults back to work.

And, by the way, what has President Clinton have to do with this, other than serve as an example of Mark Sanford's hypocrisy and unbridled opportunism? Two things which are not cause for removal from office.

Please no God talk in your wife-cheating press conference

Sanfraud's infidelity press conference was filled with references to God.

Is this the best choice?

This may be appropriate if you are being more honest, humble and personally responsible than the average spouse-cheating-Mea-Culpa press conference. Unfortunately, the public did not perceive it as such. ...the governor did not act responsible. Sandraud did not take 100% responsibility when he refused to admit at his press conference that he deceived his staff during the week long disappearance fiasco.

Sanfraud looked further out of control when he uncovered that this problem already was brought before his family and friends, and he still continued for months to repeat the mistake. The point is that this history destroys his credibility at his press conference. Why should people trust Sanfraud now?

His actions ruin his credibility and do not show heightened accountability from the public.

Sanfraud needs to leave God out of his speeches. It looks like he is trying to squander a good name to protect his own. The clergy need all the good name and credibility they can to help minister to those who are in need.

Sanfraud's actions have muddied the waters for everyone.

This whole escapade is distasteful, and the Governor has shown extremely poor judgment in elaborating on his indiscretions. From his appearance at the Seahawk event, it indicates that he has rendered himself even more ineffective. His personal business business is his own until he makes it ours, and that's exactly what he has done.We have too many vital issues (JOBS!)to have a governor who is too timid to talk and distracted by a midlife crisis. Why South Carolina's Mark Sanford imagines serial adultery won't end his career.

Sanfraud's tribulation represents another enduring "last straw" on the back of tawdry, rightwing sex-capades. His heartfelt dailliance sets forth new romantic dimensions Republicans must try to bury, shredding whatever remains of the party's "family values" propaganda. His intricate details, irreverent piety and dereliction of duty make up a potent cocktail.

Sanfraud won't resign, thus gifting unmerited high ground to the Democrats. How many times will Bible-belters pardon blasphemers who thumb their noses at God's laws?

Sanfraud achieved in two days nothing less than a party ambush: he dared justify adultery on the alter of love. Not only does Sanford swap love for sex, he invokes piety to cover dereliction of duty, lying to staff, and deceiving his family.

Beyond betraying oaths, Sanfraud offends his faith by trying to be someone else, namely the great international lover. Worse still, he squeezes Christian love with a "soul mate" into wholly secular contexts. By going on like a smitten teenager, Sanford finally invents his own Neverland where obsession over first loves resides.

Sanford's homily about merging souls blasphemously sets up his "love affair" as implicit rival to divine and spousal love. With romance novel cliches about his "forbidden" and "tragic" love story, Sanford transforms being an unfaithful husband into a cross between movie stardom (in his own movie) and a great lover willing to sacrifice all (well, except his governorship). Can you imagine evangelical preachers fuming at this subversion, implying adultery isn't that bad if you're really in love?

Sanfraud especially crosses a spiritual line by drawing freely on Biblical language in ways that should strike evangelicals as obscene. That Sanford likens himself to King David, a misleading and presumptuous parallel with king and prophet, epitomizes arrogant narcissism. When has romantic passion and religious piety ever been so warmly embraced by a pained lover forced to give up soul mate but not office?

The GOP golden boy Sanfraud defying stimulus funds. The ever charming, southern gentleman, his courtly intonations now praise his wondrous lover, touting body, soul, and tan lines. Sanford speaks more glowingly of this soul mate than the wife he pledges to will himself back into love with.

Sanfraud isn't abandoning the governorship just yet, God, he says, wants him to stay put to be humbled.

I'm not suggesting exile, but we don't want dishonorable people in leadership positions. We forgive him, and he gets to return to normal citizenship while someone else gets to take the reins.

Jesus spoke pretty clearly about divorce and adultery. Seems pretty odd that the Sanford's "spirtual counselor" is twice divorced. Is he not therefore an adulterer himself counseling another adulterer?

The South Carolina Republican leadership has decided to "censure" folksy sex troll Mark Sanford, essentially letting him get away with his South American fornication forays. They then proclaimed this "sad chapter" closed and called for "a time for healing."

What a bunch of losers. Are they that afraid that the Lt. Governor might be a gay? Well, yeah!

But the bigger loser, despite the fact that he's barely holding on to his job, is Mark Sanford. This guy had the death of a once in a generation American icon, the deaths of numerous other high-profile celebrities, not to mention a freaking serial killer on the loose in his state, perfectly timed to make his pathetic Harlequin romance story disappear from the media radar, and yet he still couldn't shut his pie-hole and make the whole thing just go away quietly.

Congrats South Carolina! You all may not be his "soul mate," but you're the ones shacked up with him, so you guys, ugh, won. By the grace of Jesus, no doubt. Yeehaw!

I find it hard to condemn a man and kick him when he is down , which is sooo the American way of doing things , especially in the cut throat arena of politics.
The Republican party talks about their Core Values as if they are sacred but one of the reasons the Republican party has lost so much ground is because as a party they have strayed so far from their Core Values.
Most of us if we are truly honest find very little difference between Republicans & Democrats and the lack of character and integrity as political history has shown showers an abundance of political leaders at every level of government that abuse their power and betray the public trust.
Ted Kennedy is one of this country's leading statesman and how easily we have forgotten his checkered past and the voters of Mass. have returned him to office for decades to corrupt our nation with his do as I say not as I do philosophy of governing and conduct.
Bill Clinton's chief sin in his scandal was not getting a BJ in the oval office but lieing to the investigators and the American people that wanted to believe in him . What else would he or others like him lie about to protect their ASSets??
Truth be known , we all have a price and to cast stones is hypocritical and negative.
Learn to be better informed regarding the people and party you support and then maybe a third party alternative will have a chance in the pre determined world of politics & Democrat / Republican agenda.
I believe party politics at it's most brutal level is what caused Sarah Palin to take a look at her political career.

You're GOP is attempting to negotiate a big payment from Sanford's 1.7 million dollar campaign fund, which they'll launder and distribute to various officials. It is right in the article. Hardly the sort of element which contributes to the clear headed debate of important civic and political issues. Now the GOP is publically committed to ending public discussion of the issue. Later on they get paid by the Governor and pass the gravy out to the candidates who agreed to go along with the plan.

I would think that is somewhat more of a problem than the Governor's family issues. A blood money payment has been requested.

This is the point, like getting on that Airplane to Argentina, where the State GOP and its candidates need to consider what such an act turns them into.

I had some minor personal contact with Governor Sanford and found him to be as egotrip described him.
His actions, although not passing the litmus test of those with a religiously dictated moral view still fall far short of the behavior of other politicos, and make no mistake about it, the democrats have a sizable numerical lead in this arena of misdeeds.

Barney Franks life style is approved by millions who believe in a Bible that doesn't.

Bill Clinton besides being a liar and aggressive womanizer tried to take half the furnishings of the white house with him when he left office.

Fritz Hollings thought the furnishings of the governor's mansion belonged to him also.

Ted Kennedy left a party on Martha's Vinyard high on whatever he was snorting and/or drinking and drove off a bridge leaving young Mary Jo Kopechne to die a slow agonizing death as she fought to escape from a car slowly filling with water. He saved his own sorry butt though and spent ten hours (sobering up)before he reported the "accident".

Tip O"Neill wasn't called TIP because his name was Thomas P. O'Neill. When he was speaker of the house nothing got past him unless he was "tipped". Everyone knew, none dared say so.

I could go on, because I haven't been living in a vacuum as so many today seem to be doing.

The political experience in general seem to invite unseemly behavior which might be one good reason to consider term limits for all. I'm sure that many of those who entered political life did so with good intentions only to be seduced by power and privilege into losing their "moral compass".

The fact that political campaigns have become popularity contests generating less focus to detail than American Idol doesn't help any either.

Most the people who are so interested in and knowledgeable about our governor know nothing about the man they voted for to be president.

What a sad testimony to the priorities of the electorate.

Get your cute little signs and go protest in Columbia. Maybe that will make you feel like your really doing something.

Then try to figure out why everything you purchase from food to gasoline is going to continue rising in cost at an exponential rate.

Then make yourselves feel real good. Blame Bush!

Imbeciles!

I am not saying that any of those candidates are really really bad I just think they are sloppy with power and felt that they were so loved they could do anything they wanted and never have to answer for it. They are all near the same age, nice looking, rich and talk intelligently. Maybe that is the problem, you need to be as smart as they are. I think it would be nice if everyone just called for an election to replace Sanford, not just moving up to the next person, but a new election.

Resignation may be the best option, but if he doesn't step down there won't be much difference. His continual pissing contests with the legislature were worth a few jollies every year, but Sanford got very little done before and he'll likely get less done now. But, if he can manage to keep his mouth shut about dancing and crossing lines, redouble his efforts as Gov., and can make a semi-success of his last 18 months, then so be it. Though if he's going to take that route, he needs to quit portraying it as in his best interests and start proving it's in the state's best interests. And it likely is in the state's best interest not to have Bauer as Governor.

First, let's clear up one area of confusion, for which I blame Newt Gingrich & Co. Clinton was NOT impeached for his dalliance with an intern. He was impeached for lying under oath, and obstructing justice. He was not convicted only because the Dems in the Senate threw principle out the window and stood with him. (That is a real contrast to the principled Republicans in the Nixon hearings.) He did lose his law license because of it, remember. Gingrich and Co. were so eager to destroy Clinton that they confused the issue, and to this day, most people seem to believe Clinton was impeached because of his sexual peccadillos.

It really does not make any difference whether Gov. Sanford resigns or not. From what I can see, he has been a very ineffective governor, and probably for the last couple of years, irrelevant, due to his inability to get along with the legislature. He seems to have a political tin ear. He has managed to make enemies not only in the Republican legislature, but also among a lot of prominent citizens, by, for example, firing members of various boards throughout the state. For no reason. It did not advance his agenda.
Gov. Sanford had (has) some ideas that would benefit the state. (Other ideas, such as selling off Santee Cooper, are crackpot). But, had he tried to work with a Republican-controlled legislature instead of politically grandstanding and publicly criticizing legislators not only as a group, but some by name, some of these good ideas might well have made it through.
That being said, it does not make any difference whether he resigns, as far as the state's day-to-day affairs are concerned-- because of the diffusion of power in our government. Much of the state government more or less runs itself without the active daily intervention of the governor, so if he stays, we probably won't notice much difference.

I am a native South Carolinian. While I've never held a political office, I have spent countless hours trying to better our state, from grass roots efforts in the upstate, to Columbia and to the low country.

A committee comprised of banking professionals (men/women) traveled to Columbia to meet with our "illustrous" judiciary committee. Our apolitical groups were trying to educate our lawmakers by explaining how consumers needed protection from unscrupulous mortgage brokers and scam artists, I came away with nothing but disgust at most of the legislators I met....as well as a sense that a fair share of the men were only out for the free food, booze and women.

The female members of our group, who traveled from all over the state, thought our esteemed "gentlemen" were nothing but sleazy rednecks. Even the male members of our group noticed the body language of some of these guys......I think "scum sucking bottom dwellers" was the consensus at the closed executive committee meeting the next morning.

It's no wonder nothing in Columbia is ever accomplished. It's much like D.C.: eat, drink, party, women. Repeat.

When you have some time, go to the legislative pages (sc.gov) and look at the amount of time is spent by male elected officials proposing and passing edicts to recognize the beauty queens (a/k/a winners of "scholarship pageants") rather than concentrate on the real business at hand. It's always the same people, running with the same crowd.....doing nothing but spending taxpayers' money.

Maybe their success is measured by where their hands REALLY end up, whether they're on a woman's breast, thigh or rear.

My point is --- Sanford is not alone....there are plenty of other Republicans, Democrats and Independents in SC politics (and beyond) who are persecuting Sanford, when they are guilty of the same acts.....

It is time to clean house.......oops! maybe I should say sweep THE House clean, as well as the Senate.

While he'll never accomplish it now, I have to support Sanford's attempt to re-write SC's constitution in order to produce a leaner, more productive form of government. What we are currently forced to accept is no acceptable. We need less government, more efficient government, more accountability, a line item veto, and many other things which are to numerous to note.

Wake up people! Or you may wake up one morning living in the 21st century version Socialism.....across the board.....and it will be too late.

But saying the bottom 50 is ridiculous when there are only 50 to begin with. And of course he has tried to advance his agenda. That is what he was elected for. Americans at the Constitutional Convention realized that a direct democracy would never work, therefore they chose to adopt a representative democracy in which citizens elected it's representatives who made decisions based on what they beleived to be in the best intrests of their constitutents. Few in either party have the interest of the general population at heart.

Globalization, nurtured by corporate and political insiders uses the ideology of socialism/Marxism as a vehicle to achieve their goals and Obama is the puppet that is paraded before us to facilitate their agenda.

Eventually we will be a "workers paradise" peopled by the highly regulated great unwashed who through their labors will provide the means for the elite to live above and beyond those with whom they really do not want to have any real contact.

A populace that is working six or seven days a week to make ends meet, has had their personal firearms confiscated by the government leaving them no means to resist that government's oppression, and is dependent on the government for employment and rudimentary health care, has scant ability to improve their lot and will be reduced to devoting all their energy just to survive.

It's happened in other countries but most Americans have been lulled into thinking it couldn't happen here!

It's happening, slowly but surely, and if we don't clean house and get some honest people in both houses of congress it will continue until our republic ends up just another failed experiment in mans quest for a society free from oppression.

Dear Terry Walker,

Your last point about the capitalization of South Carolina is correct. However, your real point seems to be that I'm stupid, because I made a grammatical mistake. That fits with a stereotype that whites have of Blacks of being unintelligent. Looks and sounds like you have some racism in your thinking.

Anyway, I didn't miss anyone in my use of the term "hypocritical white racists". I said the problem with conservatives is hypocrisy. I'll defend that. American conservatives try to defend what they call traditional values by putting an air of virtue on treating humans unequally and inhumanely.

Another reason I refer to the white people that defend Mark Sanford as hypocrites is that if Min. Louis Farrakhan did anything like this, and then simply put I'm sure they'd denounce him.

In closing, let me say that I can't promise you that I won't make another typo. I write in my spare time, quickly, sometimes at night, and I'm only human. Moreover, and let me be honest, I can't say that I'm free from every form of what some might call sexual immorality. (That's another Black stereotype.) But I can say this. Mark Sanford has shown a startling and rogue type of misjudgment and a disdain for family life and for his position as a role model.

Terry Walker ultimately my comments aren't really directed to white people. Your opening statement alludes to the support my ideas might get from other "non-hypocritical" people. That's nice. I've heard that when the Hebrews left Africa some of the Egyptians came with them. What's important to me is that Black people understand that the people that run this country are morally bankrupt and that we stop being desirous of integrating and stop idealizing whites and white values. You're people aren't better than us. Mark Sanford has shown no more respect for his wife and family, then any poor Negro in the ghetto who has run off to get his jollies. I want my people to realize that. And then I want them to see how we're condemned for this behavior, but Mark Sanford sits in the State House.

If you care to join me join knowing that I can't water down the truth for your sake. That's playing politics. I'm smart enough to do it, but to dumb to believe it'll work. I'll stick with calling a spade a spade and Mark Sanford is a disgrace.

Sincerely,

Maurice X
