WR Jeffery cleared to enroll

COLUMBIA — Alshon Jeffery received the 'A' he needed in an online summer course, and the football prospect from Calhoun County now has the green light to enroll at South Carolina.

Jeffery is expected to be on campus this weekend in preparation for the start of the second semester of summer school next week.

The 6-3 native of St. Matthews tripped up on the SAT a couple of times before receiving an acceptable score earlier in the week.

Still, Jeffery needed to get the 'A' in a science course provided by Edisto High for his full eligibility. Otherwise, the Gamecocks would've had to wait for Jeffery through at least a semester of prep school (thus going into the 2009 season without him).

A longtime Southern Cal commitment, Jeffery changed course and decided to go with the USC that's a lot closer to home.

In Steve Spurrier's offense, Jeffery could very well get a look right away. He combined for 1,650 receiving yards as a junior and senior, and his big frame will make him a target from the start.

It'll all be about how quickly he can learn.

South Carolina is looking for receivers capable of offsetting the loss of the school's all-time leading pass-catcher, Kenny McKinley.

Very creative Travis, a wide reciever that "tripped up" on the SAT a couple of times.

Sanford should investigate why there is not a Science Department at Saint Matthews. It is a shame that a fine young man has to travel soooo far to find a school that provides the oportunity for a promising athlete to EARN the A he needed. I am not sure why a B+ would have not been good enough but Jeffery made the grade.

Jeffery has already exhibited that he is willing to go to any legnths necessary to get his edgucation. Hopefully he will bring the same attitude to the playing field. Bravo Zulu to his accidemic advisor.

Good job Coach.

Not throwing rocks at the gamecock camp, but I was curious about someone taking a high school course online after one has already received his high school diploma? Is this a normal procedure these days? Do non-athletes take online high school courses as well? Can one actually improve one's high school gpa by taking an online course after graduation??

Just seems odd to me.

No offense taken by this Gamecock that's for sure. I myself have wondered the same things. The situation sounds fishy to me, but I'm glad that it worked out for the best. This young man seems to have all the talent and the drive to get things done. Here's wishing him the best. If he really all he is touted to be (the replacement for Kenny, yadayadayada) then he's got BIG shoes to fill.
