SLED exonerates Sanford on travel
By Glenn Smith , Yvonne Wenger
COLUMBIA — Gov. Mark Sanford used his own cash and connections to pay for secret hook-ups with his Argentine mistress, including one New York rendezvous the night before his wife was to arrive, authorities said Thursday.
A State Law Enforcement Division review of travel records found no criminal wrongdoing or evidence to suggest that the governor misused public funds during his affair with Maria Belen Chapur, SLED Director Reggie Lloyd said.
Sanford visited his lover twice in Argentina and three times in the Big Apple, Lloyd said. Sanford used his money or private funds to pay for everything but a June 2008 trip to Argentina.
That trip was built around legitimate economic development meetings, Lloyd said. But the Argentine leg was added at the governor's suggestion and also included a tryst.
"Who he wants to see or spend time with (after-hours) is his own personal affair, no pun intended," Lloyd said.
Sanford's office hailed the findings and reiterated that the governor has no intention of heeding the many calls for his resignation. As his press secretary declared "this issue is behind us once and for all," Sanford made plans to fly to Florida to be with his wife and four children for the July 4 holiday.
He could face a frosty reception in the Sunshine State. His wife, Jenny, said she is willing to forgive her cheating husband, but he has a long way to go to earn back trust for his "inexcusable actions."
"Mark showed a lack of judgment in his recent actions as governor," she said Thursday. "However, his far more egregious offenses were committed against God, the institutions of marriage and family, our boys and me."

Thursday's revelations aren't likely to help matters much. Lloyd revealed that Sanford met with his mistress Sept. 25 in New York City, one day before his wife joined him.
While such facts might be salacious and "good fodder for comedians," they don't rise to the level of criminality, Lloyd said.
He said his office has been inundated with requests from lawmakers and others to investigate the governor's affairs, but SLED has no cause to do so. Lloyd said he won't allow his agency to be used for political means.
"Sometimes fairness means just standing up and saying, 'There is nothing there,' " he said.
Lloyd said Sanford was cooperative and agreed to be interviewed by SLED agents. He also turned over his personal records, even though investigators had no probable cause to request them, he said. Sanford released those records to the media Thursday.
Sanford also coughed up about $3,000 this week to reimburse the state for his expenses on the 2008 Argentina trip with state Commerce Department officials. Lloyd said the governor had "his own reasons" but was under no legal obligation to repay it.
Trips SLED reviewed
June 21-28, 2008: Sanford met with mistress while on state-sponsored commerce trip to Brazil and Argentina.
Sept. 25, 2008: Sanford met with mistress in New York City. His wife, Jenny, arrived the following day. Sanford paid for the trip.
Nov. 18-21, 2008: Sanford met mistress in New York City on his way back from a Republican Governors Association-sponsored trip to Dublin, Ireland. He paid for his stay in the Big Apple.
Feb. 4-6, 2009: Sanford met with mistress in New York City, accompanied by a "spiritual adviser." Sanford paid his own way.
June 18-24, 2009: Sanford paid to travel to Argentina to meet mistress. He had given his staff the impression that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Sanford's admissions have cost him more than the price of that trip. The "Lovenor," as some have now dubbed him, has lost the support of many allies, including more than half of his fellow Republicans in the state Senate.
On Thursday, Sentinel publishing killed a deal for Sanford to write a conservative book titled "Within Our Means."
Long known for his penny-pinching ways, Sanford in 1995, then a congressman, agonized over whether to take a trade-mission trip to Brazil, Argentina and Chile paid for with $10,000 in taxpayer money.
He knew constituents viewed such "fact-finding missions" as junkets, and he vowed to eliminate such congressional perks.
"I know politically it's not the right thing ever to go on any trip," Sanford told The Post and Courier after returning. "I was skeptical (about joining the delegation), but I learned a lot."
It was on that trip that Sanford had a romantic encounter, minus sex, in Chile with an American businesswoman, the Washington Times has reported, citing anonymous sources. Sanford hasn't confirmed or refuted the account but has acknowledged dalliances with other women.
Sanford has since traveled extensively with the use of tax dollars and private funds from groups such as the Republican Governors Association, which he headed until resigning last week, after his confession.
During his years in Congress, private groups paid for him to visit such far-flung places as Cuba, China, Japan, Nepal, Kazakhstan and Croatia, according to federal records. He did not take family along on most visits, documents show.
He also has traveled internationally on the state's dime as governor, visiting Japan, Paris, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, London, Brazil and, of course, Argentina, according to records The Post and Courier obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. The documents don't detail costs.
From January 2003 to mid-June of this year, the governor's office also ran up more than $380,000 in expenses for using a state plane to fly Sanford, his staff and his family on hundreds of flights to various destinations in South Carolina and other states, records show.
Some trips took them as far as Iowa or Indiana. But Sanford mainly used the plane to jet around the state, including short hops within driving distance. He once flew from Columbia to Florence and back, a 90-minute drive one way, at a cost of about $500.
Sanford's supporters have said that his travel more than paid for itself by bringing jobs to the state. South Carolina has recruited more than 83,000 jobs and $18 billion in capital investments by companies during the governor's two terms, according to the Commerce Department.
The Brazil portion of the 2008 South America trip paid off for the state, officials said. That trip, which as originally planned by Commerce, helped land Brazilian manufacturer FITESA, which committed to a $120 million investment to build an Upstate plant and create 80 jobs, the governor's office said.
So far, the Argentine leg, which the governor asked to add, has yielded nothing tangible.

The Governor and his DUD wife needs to go sit down....I've lost the respect I had for Jenny as she is taking this man back after he has PUBLICLY stated he's going to TRY to fall back in LOVE with her. Why subject those boys through a LOVELESS marriage and more mockery knowing their father ISN'T with his SOULMATE and how TRIFLING of Sanford to be with his mistress the NIGHT BEFORE his wife is to arrive in NY. As I've stated before, these people are a LAFFING STOCK and has done nothing but bring SHAME on the state of SC......And since he won't leave office on his own, he should be THROWN out. Imagine the vacation they're having after all the sordid and TRUTHFUL details he's revealed on wanting to be with his SOULMATE. Jenny BUY A CLUE and stop being a fool for a man WHO DOESN'T LOVE YOU AND ISN'T IN LOVE WITH YOU.....So much for YOUR self respect and DIGNITY.....You just lost it all by accepting someone who CRIED for FIVE days because he DIDN'T want to LEAVE his SOULMATE......I guess you feel good because you're with him, but he'd RATHER be with HER.....ENJOY the CRUMBS....LOL

It's wonderful that Reggie Lloyd can so quickly address this issue as the head of SLED.
It's awfully sad that neither Lloyd- nor any member of his office-has ever paid any attention to a criminal complaint sent to him on 16 July 2007 when he was still the U.S. Attorney.
This leaves a taint on some credibility here, at least for me.

SC Governor Mark Sanford Released from Book Contract
Penguin's Sentinel imprint has released South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford from his book contract.
Recently, the governor admitted to an affair with an Argentinian woman. Sanford was scheduled to finish the book for Spring 2010 publication. In 2000, he published a book entitled, interestingly enough, "The Trust Committed To Me."
Here's a statement from Adrian Zackheim, President and Publisher of Sentinel: "Sentinel has agreed to release Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina from his contract to write a book about fiscal conservatism, which was to be called WITHIN OUR MEANS and was scheduled for publication in March 2010. This is a mutual decision. We wish Governor Sanford the best."
Guv...I'm sorry....I know I promised not to say anything more if you didn't.......but I found this off of link from POLITCO.COM and I just couldn't resist......Happy 4th of July in Florida guv........BTW did you tell little ole Andy you were going out of town again.....is Andy in charge?

The problem is they asked for an investigation into some specific things, McMaster got SLED to "investigate" and cleared him of any wrongdoing in less than 2 days time when even the layperson (me or YOU?) can see there have been abuses. I told them that I didn't believe this "investigation" was legit and many others agree with me. Let's all keep our voices heard and keep applying pressure. Write to CREW or call or email, let them know we are sick of the good ole boy system in SC and we want someone to ACTUALLY investigate this. The CREW letter was also addressed to our State Ethics Commission:
State Ethics Commission

Columbia, SC 29201
(803) 253-4192 (office)
I will also be keeping McMaster's name in my mind for who NOT to vote for since he knew that Reggie Loyd is friends with Sanford and owes his job to him but still requested that SLED investigate without finding any conflict of interest.
Also, I didn't tell CREW in my email but I did link this article so I will state that I believe the sole reason for attempting to sweep this under the rug and keep
Sanford in office is that Andre Bauer is an unpopular Lt. Gov and Glenn McConnell does not want to have to step in as Lt. Gov and be basically stripped of his career. THAT is why we have to put up with a known lying cheater thief for 18 months!

Hey "lookingonthebrightside" -- is that you Mark???
There are very BIG differences between Clinton and Sanford.
1. Clinton did not leave the country to meet with a foreign national, he had an affair with an American, in America.
2. Clinton did not DISAPPEAR for 7 days without putting the VP in charge, in fact he was in the Oval/Oral Office at the time.
3. Clinton did not divert his entire entourage to Argentina, like Sanford, at substantial expense to the taxpayer.
4. Clinton did not concoct a premeditated cock-and-bull lie of where he was going and what he was going to be doing like Sanford.
5. Clinton did not run on a hypocritical Christian and Family Values platform like Sanford.
6. Clinton did not ostracize another politician and call for his impeachment over marital infidelity, like Sanford.
7. Clinton was doing a GREAT job as a government leader, presiding over the US at its peak of prosperity, Sanford...well, enough said.

No we're NOT perfect, but we're NOT going around telling LIES about our where abouts either. I know I'm not PRETENDING to be something/someone I'm not. It is what it is and he LIED and used TAXPAYERS money to fund his EXOTIC trip(s) to see his MISTRESS. The clown is so PATHETIC that he admitted on tv to CRYING for FIVE freaking days because he DIDN'T want to LEAVE HER and then Jenny, low self-esteem, Sanford has the galls to STAY in a LOVELESS marriage knowing that her husband ISN'T in love with her and would RATHER be with his mistress. The man said well at least he'll DIE knowing he had met his SOULMATE......What RESPECTABLE woman would stay with a man after he's made a PUBLIC MOCKERY out of her. I was down with Jenny and her stance UNTIL yesterday when she made the announcement that she's staying with this BUSTA. Now she's making a MOCKERY out of WOMEN and teaching her boys that people can CRAP on you, but as long as they ask for forgiveness then you should stay with them. WHAT IS SHE TEACHING THOSE BOYS??? That a woman is to be DISRESPECTED and if you say the right things then she'll stay with you. They are a TERRIBLE example to those boys and maybe child protective services should be called upon to see what's really happening in that household. Jenny is a WUS as is her SISSYBOY husband. Run them OUT of SC NOW!!!! Let them state in FL secluded on their vacation.....I know it's TENSE one.....Surely he's SNEAKING OFF calling his SOULMATE and Jenny is PULLING FIRE GUARD duty trying to make sure he doesn't run away to be with the LOVE OF HIS LIFE.......Again, these people are a JOKE and a DISGRACE to the STATE and NATION........

Just a little response to your non-comparison comparison.
1. Clinton had his officer's (when he was governor) assist in the cover-ups he did not need to run somewhere. As prez his staffers turned the blind eye so they could continue to work.
2. Why do take out when delivery was available. This is probably the smarter of their idiotic choices.
3. No he just went on national TV and lied about everything from his affairs as governor to the presidential non-sexual encounters.
4. See number 3
5. The only faith he had was that he would be getting another non-sexual encounter in a few days.
6. IF I remember correctly the impeachment hearings were over his lying to a grand jury about the affairs not the affairs..
7. Clinton "peak of prosperity" which was found to be inflated record keeping from the robber barons of wall street that assisted into the demise we are now in. hmmm wonder what the term dot.com failures had to with it?

Weather they were worth the extra cost remains to be seen. My closeup vision is excellent but the distance vision leaves something to be desired. Also the "rings" around lights makes night driving a wee bit less pleasant. If wearing reading glasses is the only drawback to settling for the standard lens replacement, that may not be such a bad thing after all.

If Sanford was a Democrat, I have no doubt the Post and Courier and the rest of the Republican's would be screaming for his resignation and if he didn't, you would be calling for a special session to impeach him. If you don't believe this then why did Fox News put a 'D' after Sanford's name on their coverage of his "press conference". See following link - http://www.politicususa.com/en/FNC-Sa...
Sanford's political capital was built on attacking people for doing less than what he just did. Sanford's hypocrisy rap sheet:
On Speaker of the House Bob Livingston: "The bottom line... is he still lied. He lied under a different oath, and that is the oath to his wife" Mark Sanford - CNN 1998
On President Clinton: "I think it would be much better for the country and for Clinton personally to resign. I come from the business side and if you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone" Mark Sanford - Post and Courier, September 12, 1998
Just last year, Sanford ordered Lenneau Berry, Mayor of Latta, be stripped of his mayoral powers for doing something similar with town funds that Sanford did with State funds (under his own admission by paying back Argentina travel money to the State). Berry didn't get to undo his wrong and payback the money.
Sanford built his career on "family values" professing moral superiority. What makes him worse than Clinton is that Clinton was never sanctimonious.
Sanford had no intention of "coming clean voluntarily" until he found out E-mails documenting his affair were coming to light. He was still telling reporter Gina Smith at the Atlanta airport he changed his mind from hiking and wanted to go somewhere exotic until she notified him about the E-mails. He was still lying at the return flight gate from Argentina. He lied at his "press conference" about the number of contacts with his mistress. When will the lies stop? He will never regain his credibility.
Mr. Sanford has no sense of honor or he would have resigned at his "press conference".

Maria: Oh Marco, suddenly you look so old, and puny, and dried out. I don't know.............

FamilyValue why are you so angry and mean? You should be happy, your party is in charge. Also, Sara Palin never said she could see Russia from her house, get your facts straight. The SNL lady portraying Sara Palin said that. Why do you hate her and other conservative Christians so much?

Hey you guys must really be a bunch of losers.Go somewhere and enjoy the 4th of July like our GOVERNOR did. And this is not about Sara Palin;let the woman rest.Mon-Kie that was such a silly comment,no more please. Let the Governor and his First Lady alone. Maybe she don't want some slime to hit the press about her. She may have more to hide than Gov.Sanford. Go on now and enjoy your weekend, that's what I plan to do. THIS IS OVER.

Isn't it embarrasing enough that with S. Palin resigning the main news makers are still brining SC and our gov. into the story. Affair or not he LEFT SC WITHOUT A WORD TO ANYONE...HE WENT AWOL...he should be impeached...NOW...as for his wife...if she takes him back shes just dumb
