On the gum patrol

David Samios removes chewing gum from the 'gum poles' at East Bay and North Market streets Thursday. He estimated it would take him seven to eight hours to complete the job. He said most people thank him for removing the gum, but he tells them that 'it'll probably be back in a week anyway.' City officials have tried for years to discourage passers-by from depositing their lumpy clumps of used gum on a trio of utility poles near the intersection.

i was actually thinking about this yesterday. i was looking at all the black spots on the sidewalk though. why do people throw their nasty gum on the ground? yuck! there is not much worse than stepping in gum. i would say it's worse than stepping in poop. at least you can wash the poop off!
i wonder how they get that stuff off the sidewalk.

Why not cover the bottom 10 feet of the pole in something that is easier to clean and/or removable like teflon or plastic sheet? Many colors are available and it is easy to apply/remove. Considering the number of hours and expense required to clean the gum from the wood it would pay for itself in a very short time.
