Ex-coach facing sex charges

Authorities say man solicited 12-year-old

A former First Baptist Church School teacher and baseball coach who led his team to a state championship this year is accused of soliciting a 12-year-old student for sex through text messages.

Charles 'DJ' Fishburne Rhodes III, 26, a former teacher and coach, is accused of soliciting a student for sex.

Charleston County sheriff's investigators on Thursday charged Charles "DJ" Fishburne Rhodes III, 26, of Charleston with criminal solicitation of a minor. Rhodes turned himself in at the Charleston County Detention Center and later was released after posting $25,000 bail.

An affidavit said the victim told investigators that Rhodes began text messaging her on her cell phone in late May after school let out for the summer. The two talked through texts for about two to three weeks when Rhodes wrote and asked her to "come over." One text asked her to perform oral sex on him, the affidavit said.

A police report said Rhodes apologized and resigned as a teacher and coach June 26 when officials at the Meeting Street school approached him about the texting.

Rhodes waived his rights and admitted in a statement to investigators that he engaged in the sexual conversation with the student, the affidavit said.

Rhodes and the school's baseball team were honored by the state General Assembly in May for winning the 2009 S.C. Independent School Association Class AA state championship.

"Whereas, having taken over the First Baptist baseball program four years ago with eight freshmen, Coach D.J.

Rhodes, with dedication and persistence, built his program into championship caliber and plans to keep it that way," the resolution read.

Rhodes does not have a prior criminal history in South Carolina, according to State Law Enforcement Division records.

He and Headmaster Thomas Mullins did not immediately return phone calls Thursday afternoon.

Rhodes is the second teacher and coach at the school to face sexual misconduct charges since 2004.

A jury in 2005 found Mark Vail, a former physical education and math teacher who coached basketball and football, guilty of having sex with a 12-year-old student. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The school was also shaken with tragedy in August 2006 when Charleston police found teacher Clifton Harris Jr. slumped over the wheel of his car along the Battery wall. Harris had been shot twice. That case remains unsolved.

The law needs to be changed so that there are only two sentencing options in cases like this. The judge should have to sign his/her name next to one that says:

"Death Penalty"

or one that says

"Let back out so that he can rape a child"

Our justice system currently chooses the second choice almost every time. I think if we worded it the way it should be worded, may that might change.

ColdBud-

Do you have any facts or statistics to back up your ridiculous claim about how the justice system currently treats these cases?

I thought not.

Thatta boy, don't let a little thing like reality get in the way of the certainty of your opinions. Maybe there is a guest spot on Rush, Glen Beck, or Michael Savage in your future if you keep it up - just try to add a little more hate, narrow mindedness and outrageous rhetoric and you will be well on your way to your own satellite radio show. Good Luck!

Cold Bud.....wasn't there just a story a few weeks ago about the legilsature overriding a Sanford veto that dealt with child predators? I am sure I will get this wrong but Sanford vetoed it because he deemed it too "easy" on these scumbags and the legislature overrode to allow lesser sentences.

Is that right?

MIKEINNC....so you support these predators? Most of us can turn on CNN, HLN, or FOX and see for ourselves how many repeat offenders there are in the news....sometimes the national shows actually cover it.

Way to log on to a news site and comment on the news though... good going. Oh wait.. you didn't comment on the news did you? Nope.. sure didn't. Just ran off at the mouth and made a fool of yourself, didn't you?

Jammer and coldbud need basic reading courses, than again I remember which state I'm in. Sex offenders get lengthy sentences, they carry the brand with them the reset of their lives. I didn't see where Mike said or implied otherwise. Now pay attention you two or three reading challenged folks, no where did I say I approved of their behavior or favor sentence reduction or any other number of excuses to let them off. They do deserve long prison sentences at the minimum.

Your posts are based on hysterical drama driven "fact" those are the "facts" he is questioning. Your brand of "fact" driven drama filled hysterics are one of the reasons we are in the mess we are in. Sorry if some of us have other methods of arguing besides drama filled tirades. Thinking is fundamental, so is getting your anger under control. Carry on.

While DJ's conduct was unacceptable and he certainly should be punished for his conduct, the parents need to pay attention to the phone activity of their daughter.

"Sexting" is something widely publicized on TV, and it's sick to think that 12 year old girls are running around with cell phones having these types of conversations.

Also, DJ did not make a mistake. A mistake is when you accidentally forget to turn a light off, or when you forget to lock your car. Sending sex messages to a 12 year old girl is not a mistake- it's sick.

lock up this little sluts parents and the little slut she ruined this mans life and why post his name and pic

UrGatorbait, lets look at reading skills since you brought them up.

In my post I made the point that sex offenders are let back out in society to offend again. The fact is, that happens in MOST cases.

mikeinnc asked if I had any facts to back up my statement and then, incorrectly stated that I didn't. He then accused me of being filled with hate, out of touch with reality and he made a few other comments I can't quite make any sense of.

My statement, which was, by the way, about the article, was correct. MOST sex offenders are released back into society to offend again.

In my second post I simply pointed out that mikeinnc was incorrect and that his post had nothing to do with the article.

Now, in this post, I'm simply pointing out that your post is also incorrect. Yours is even sillier as you bring up reading skills and yet must failed to understand any of the prior posts. .

I would hang him by his gonads if he had texted my daughter. And if his family does not like to hear the truth that 99% of these comments are giving: Guess what, DO NOT LOOK AT THEM!!! CLICK ON ANOTHER SITE!!
One of the sadest part of this whole ordeal is his innocent baby. This child did not ask to be born into the chaos his/her daddy has caused. I hope his wife takes this and learns from it. The 12 year is not a baby but by GOD SHE IS STILL A YOUNG CHILD. I would hope she watches the child closely because it is a proven fact that sex offenders are REPEAT OFFENDERS!!!!

Pardon my lack of grammar because i am just going off in a tangent. i attended FB for some time and graduated while DJ was still employed at the school. I never had any respect for him because he was such an arrogant stuck-up person. Unless you were one of his big time baseball players you might as well have been the gum stuck on the bottom of his shoe.He took Mr. Harris' place when he was killed a few years ago and was the best teacher i ever had and for a scum bag like DJ Rhodes to take his is just an insult. As for him in regards to this situation, i mean come on, 12 years old what kind of sick twisted pervert would even think of doing something like that!?!?!? It makes me so angry to know that there are people out there like him and this will unfortunately probably happen again. And then his poor wife she is one of the nicest people you could ever know and i hope she has enough self respect to LEAVE HIM!!!! Also it is horrible that sick people like him are the ones that give Christianity such a bad reputation. Anyway knowing that perverts like him get the worst punishment in jail he will pay for what he did because even hardcore criminals hate child predators

I just want to say that first of all I am not excusing DJ's behavior at all but having been family friends with his family and worked with him for a period of time. this was completely shocking, this is not his type of lifestyle at all. as someone pointed out he did have favorites at school and they did tend to be the baseball team but what do you expect he had coached most of them for four years and one of them was his baby brother. As for the charges, everyone always wants to blame the guy, but as a former female FB student there are plenty of girls walking around acting way older than their age. WHy didn't this 12 year old simply not respond to text messages. If a coach texted me my first response would be to say this is not right don't text me again not to engage in a sexual discussion with the man. Yes she is 12 and he is 26 but that does not excuse her lack of judgement in the situation. As far as people's comments of the fact that letting him go would be allowing a rapist to go free...nes flash Rape was not committed. The allegations that there is more than one girl are ridiculous. This is simply copy cat girls coming out of the woodwork just like when more and more girls began to accuse Coach Vail back in 2005. I only hope that this family can get through this that Drew can go on and enjoy his college years, that Fran will give birth to a beautiful healthy baby who will be given the chance to know its Daddy, that Mr. Dusty (Dj's dad) will continue to recover from a recent surgery and that DJ will learn from this. God forgives and I hope this whole family will lean on Him to get them through this very difficult time.

prisons are full of talented well spoken people that seem to have hearts of gold, but they are all called criminals for a reason

a man who even lets himself get to a place where he's asking a 12 kid to give him oral sex is nothing more than a scum of the earth pervert

all of us Men have had girls, kids, come on to us at times... it's because KIDS go through stages with their hormones, it's all part of growing up and developing

a Man puts the little girl in her place quickly and makes sure he's never in a situation around that girl where they are alone... or even further than hearing distance from others

boys come on to girls, girls come on to boys, boys come on to women, girls come on to men... it's all part of nature and we should take advantage of that instance to TEACH our children how to be mature in their sexual prowness... not take advantage of THEM

plain and simple the guy's a perverted wackjob that had plans to rape this girl, he himself admitted it... what more can you say??

HAS ANYONE STOPPED TO THINK WHEN HE TURNED HIMSELF IN, HE DID SO BECAUSE HE WAS PROBABLY SCARED TO DEATH BEING HE'S NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG BEFORE, OR BEEN IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW?!? WHAT ABOUT HOW THE WAY POLICE OFFICERS TREAT PEOPLE WITHOUT KNOWING BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY! I BELIEVE HE WAS MANIPULATED AND PURSUADED TO WAIVE HIS RIGHTS AND ADMIT TO SOMETHING THAT HE MORE THAN LIKELY DIDN'T DO! BEFORE THIS OVER WITH, I HOPE THE 12 YEAR OLD UNDERGO'S AN INVESTIGATION AS WELL, BECAUSE IT'S VERY HARD TO BELIEVE SHE'S INNOCENT! HELL, SHE ALLOWED THE TEXTING FOR 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE SHE TOLD RIGHT?

This is a tragic situation. I knew DJ and his entire family since he was a youth. If he is guilty- which he apparently has admitted that he is- the people I feel most sorry for are the families affected by this. The victim and her family, for I'm sure she'll never be the same. And I will pray for DJ's family as they are going through a lot. His father is ill and this "indiscretion" on DJ's part will not make it any easier for him to recover. I feel for DJ's wife. There will be a stigma that follows him (and her) for the rest of their lives. Many of you don't know but their child was born and is in poor health. Imagine all that SHE is going through. The enbarassment of her husband having these charges as well as a sick, hospitalized child.

It is incidents like this that give Christians a bad name. I don't claim to be perfect but all I can do is pray- for DJ, and all parties involved. Everyone makes mistakes, I agree. But I know of students that attended First Baptist this past year and I was told he had the reputation of being a pervert. This is very disheartening and I can only hope that his family finds solace during this trying time.

That's not to say I don't feel for the victim. One in three girls is sexually assaulted in her lifetime. I agree that the school should do more conclusive background searches and possibly even psychological evaluations. But in this case it doesn't look like it would do much good. He had no prior record.

Isn't it sad that we live in a time where if a young man wants to be a teacher (and in some cases even a female) we always question why? Children are our most important asset. We should treat them as such.

I know a lot of you are outraged by what you read concerning DJ and his actions. If he has in fact committed the crime he has plead guilty to, then he does deserve to be punished justly. My reason for posting is to shed some light on DJ as a person, and why I think this happened so that some of you can realize that even though what he did was a disgusting mistake, he's not the monster you want him to be.

I knew DJ in college, and DJ was a fun-loving guy who enjoyed the company of a woman. DJ was a good athlete, very likable, funny, and never afraid to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. So inevitably, he had many "dates" with the local women and college girls. Having said that, I had never known DJ to take advantage of any woman, or especially never witnessed him thinking or trying to engage in any sexual encounter with an underage girl.

Somewhere along the way, those lines must have blurred for DJ. Maybe by spending large amounts of time with underage girls he forgot that they were still very much minors and under his care. DJ's personality was always to push the envelope, I just hate to see he pushed in this unfortunate direction.

DJ is smart guy, and I seriously doubt the prosecutors and police "tricked" him into pleading guilty or waiving his rights. It sounds like he certainly did commit the crime, and I would have to believe he deeply regrets his actions now that he has shamed himself and his family, and hurt a little girl and her family in the process.

It is a good thing that he was caught before it got any worse. This way he can be put behind bars long enough to realize he was heading down the wrong path and straighten his life out once he is released.
