Leonard Bernard Gregory Jr., 23, is accused of causing the crash that killed Johnny and Betty Vice on Sunday near Hampton Park.

A convicted drug dealer with a suspended driver's license is accused of fleeing police and causing a wreck that killed a married couple Sunday in downtown Charleston.

A tipster Thursday morning led authorities to 23-year-old Leonard Bernard Gregory Jr. at Trident Medical Center, where he apparently was being treated for injuries related to the fatal crash, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said. He said troopers arrested Gregory just before noon as he was being released from the hospital.

Johnny and Betty Vice died after a car fleeing Charleston police crashed into their vehicle at Ashley Avenue and Moultrie Street near Hampton Park. Three men in the suspect car got out and ran away, and the driver sped off and left the couple to die.

Gregory, a Charleston construction worker, is charged with two counts of reckless homicide, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and fifth-offense driving under suspension. He remained Thursday night at the Charleston County Detention Center as the investigation continued and authorities tried to identify the men who fled the wreck on foot.

In bond court, Gregory's friends gasped as Charleston County Magistrate Alvin Bligen set bond for the reckless homicide and leaving-the-scene charges at $1 million each, for a total of $4 million. He also set bond at $2,105 for the driving-under-suspension charge.

Gregory's nine-page criminal history shows convictions for possessing, manufacturing and trafficking cocaine. The record shows that he also has been convicted of discharging a firearm into a dwelling. On Thursday, he told the bond judge that he had been released from jail on June 1.

Betty Vice and her husband, Johnny, were killed Sunday after their car was hit by another car that was fleeing from police.

Gregory's driver's license has been suspended, off and on, since he started driving at age 17, his driving record shows. The record shows at least 13 traffic convictions since 2003, including speeding, careless or negligent driving, operating an unsafe vehicle, failure to pay a traffic ticket or appear in court, and multiple drug violations.

Johnny Vice, 63, a merchant mariner, and Betty Vice, 62, a teacher, raised six children in their North Charleston home. They were out for a Sunday drive when they were hit.

A criminal record that is NINE pages long, and he has killed two innocent people less than 30 days after getting out of jail.......the judicial system has failed us AGAIN.

The injuries he received in the commission of his crimes are probably the only serious consequences he will face after he takes another spin through the court system.

Bless the loved ones of Mr. and Mrs. Vice.

We have a real problem here. We in the black community have a problem with the application of justice and what we want to see in the way of justice. People lose respect for a group of people that have such ad hoc policies as "stop snitching", people who always want their communities to be drug and crime free but always see the muscular use of police power as a form of racism. Their is a reason that there is a heightened police presence in SOME black neighborhoods...more crime is committed there, by a certain subset of the black population, a population that is young and carefree about the use of violence to benefit them and their brethren. These young men and women cannot be saved, no matter how many community marches, midnight basketball programs, and job training workshops or other giveaways are made available to them.

Please, no one tell me that that Leonard Bernard Gregory is a good kid, that he was misunderstood, that the white man was keeping him down. That's bull**it. This man should have been in prison for life. He didn't even have the decency to turn himself in, KNOWING that his actions led to 2 people being killed, two innocent people who's only crime was taking a drive on a Sunday afternoon. He is like a lot of these young men are these days, quick to kill, quick to sell drugs, quick to destroy, but without the knowledge or capacity to create.

When I usually take the time to post on this board, It is usually in defense of morons like this. But sometimes I can understand their points, especially at times like this. Yes, all races commit all sorts of crimes. But in this area, you can drive throughout this area during regular working hours and see black men, between the ages of 18-40 on a corner, in a shelter, at the employment office, usually walking around with a white t-shirt on, mad about something. You just don't see anything comparable in the white community, there is no epidemic of white on white crime among 15-30 year olds. There are no 15-year old white kids dying under interstate overpasses in Mount Pleasant. And I doubt that white people would spend all day blaming it on black racism it that were the case. As much as I hate to admit it, among some of us there is an expectation of an endless supply of chances. This criminal was free because someone, somewhere made deals and concessions in the criminal justice system. We expect someone to give us something, when all we are owed is an opportunity and respect. But I admit, as someone who manages people that it pains me to see young men who would not take a job if it means cutting their hair or taking their fake gold teeth out of their mouths. People who cant get your order straight because they want to text message. People who no matter how menial or easy the task is, will always say that they can't do it or that it is too hard. People are tired of this. And I'm as black as they come.

Thank you omarro1974 for the post I am a black female raised in Mount Pleasant, hung out downtown with the worst of them. I chose drugs as my way of escape, but I can also say that I am a recovering addict with 9 years clean; a husband and two daughters. I am not sorry that I moved away from home to get my life togather and get away from the life style that I was living; because these were the type of people I hung out with. The victims are relatives of mine and it was truly a loss to the family. I pray that someone that is either living that life style or contemplating that lifestyle reads your post and turn their life around as I did 9 years ago. Thanks for the reality check. And for those of you who feels that he is wrongly accused I think his record speaks for itself.

very good points all omarro1974

people like this are the reason the black community as a whole are lumped into a group and stereotyped but not all of us are like these people.... the ones of us who actually had parents who had no issue with cracking a whip on our ass's instead of shoving the crack in there pipes, you would be suprised at some of these thugs parents the apple doesnt fall far from the tree

i would bet a years paycheck on this fact ... if welfare and foodstamps and sec8 where cut down to 2 year maximum programs ( for those whom really needed it.two years is plenty to get on youre feet)...you would see a abrupt halt in the number of young, single, no job having, dropouts having 4-7 kids whom they wont raise and send out on the rest on us as the theifs, crackdealers, carjackers, and murders.. anyone wanna challenge me on this ?? lol

Well said Omarro.

The amount of crime committed by blacks in Chas county, SC and the entire US is disproportionate to the black population. That much is indisputable fact.

Only by recognizing the problem and being able to discuss it openly can we have any chance of solving the problem.

At present, we cannot discuss this problem in the US openly.

Why?

One morning we're all going to wake up and read an article on this website that tells us this young man was shot dead during the night. When I post that we're better off with him dead, by any means, I'll be chastised for being cruel and uncaring. The religious nuts will tell me that "it's not my place to judge" and the friends and family will tell me that "I don't know him and that he was a good guy and that I should shut up". One or two might even go so far as to call me a racist.

Those are the attitudes that have led this country to continuously return criminals to the streets. Those are the attitudes that result in the deaths of innocent people.

Leonard Bernard Gregory Jr. has nothing positive to offer society. He is, and will always be, a leach. The justice system needs to remove him from society permanently.

BPFROM843, your post is so out of touch with reality, I'm going to assume that your words are not your beliefs, but just an attempt to get people riled up. If you truly believe that 95% of the people on this Earth are criminals, you're hanging out in the wrong crowds and will most likely end up being the subject of an article just like this one.

Gregory, has no compassion, no consern for his fellow man, is a repeat offender, with obviously no reason to fear the law or worry about the consequences of his actions. He has a RECORD, that speaks for itself.

Well, meet the consequences of Leonard Bernard Gregory Jrs actions - "Johnny Vice, 63, a merchant mariner, and Betty Vice, 62, a teacher, raised six children in their North Charleston home. They were out for a Sunday drive when they were hit."

This man is a: coward, a killer, and quite frankly, a predator that needs to be put down like sick cat.

Of course, we have three people in here trying to justify his actions as being "misunderstood," and those who think his actions are what they are as "racist," even though the poster has no idea of the races he/she/it accuses! Two are just plain idiots. A third has to prove that he/she/it is so much bigger and better than anyone else that she would demand that other people suffer from a homicidal freak to satify he/she/it's misplaced sense of self-serving noblesse-oblige!

To the abovementioned half-literate morons, put your money where your mouth is. Why don't you post surety or bond to help the downtrodden memeber of society out? He could live with you while he awaits trial, and heck, he could drive you around town, since he obviously knows how to get to places quickly. License? He doesn't need one, that's just another link in the chain the man has made to keep people down! He could babysit for you, or help you make flyers for the next International ANSWER protest or rally at the College of Charleston!

Why, he could even probably write a really great social action book of how being kept down by some faceless oppressor left him with no choice but to take two human lives. After all, one of the three posters stated that no one was "innocent," and who knows what those two were doing? They shouldn't have been on the same street as the other guy, anyway? Right?

It was once said that you could give a million monkeys each a typewriter and a year's time, you could produce the works of William Shakespeare. Now, with this forum and the internet, we now know that to be false!

ONLYGODCANJUDGEME, please understand that I am not insulting you, but if you are thinking of that most taken out of context scripture, Matthew 7:1, as a means to absolve societal responsibilty for dealing with killers, then you have to ignore the rest of the Bible.

Christ said in Matthew 5:17, "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."

Soooooo...that means all of the rules like the "Big Ten" are still in force, i.e., "You Shall Not Murder." Exodus 20:13.

"You shall not murder," Dueteronomy 5:17.

"Whoever kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the testimony of witnesses; but one witness is not sufficient testimony against a person for the death penalty." Numbers 35:30.

"But the children of the murderers he did not execute, according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, in which the LORD commanded, saying, "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; but a person shall be put to death for his own sin." 2 Kings 14:16.

"He said to Him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, " 'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,'" Matthew 19:17-19.

I'm sorry, but I am more than a bit tired of all those people who are "suddenly Christian" when a thug kills someone in cold blood, and has to answer for his actions. I've seen too much of it, from the cold blooded animal who was shot dead robbing the bread deliveryman on James Island whose pastor said that he was such a good boy and sang in the choir, to every idiot that refers to the Bible when they get into trouble.

IF people of that ilk believed in it, then they should have been trying to minister to the guy BEFORE he killed someone, and during the time of his lawlessness!

for the idiots that say don't judge people like this... WE should ALL judge people like this, for what they are... they are predators, scum of the earth, career criminals that actually look forward to going to jails/prisons to add more notches to their belts

these are subhuman people, not because of their color but because of the lifestyle they CHOOSE to live... and they need to be removed permanently

the "thou shalt not judge" isn't talking about not judging criminals and predators like this, you guys trying to preach that are taking it way out of context for your own use... not for what it actually means

it also says follow mans laws, there's a "judge" in every courthouse that's supposed to enforce that... but they keep letting these thugs out over and over again

you have to judge the distance to a wall so you don't hit it, as you have to judge and area or a person for the safety of your family... when you judge that area you are judging the people that live in it because they are the one's that make that area what it is

we are supposed to judge everything and everyone... how do you think we make decisions to go to war and with who etc etc...

or do we not judge those that invade us and let them continue

well this is our internal invasion, the young black males have been allowed to run rampant because the white people have been soooooo scared to be called racist because many will lose their jobs or standing over it... that's how ridiculous this PC crap has got

the truth is the truth no matter who you are, and truth is that this POS is a POS that needs to be permanently removed... I'd be more than happy to pull the switch myself if allowed

he killed two very great innocent people, without a bit of remorse... who knows how many more he's killed over his few years with the dope he's sold

if he's sorry for anything it's because he got caught

we need our justice system completely overhauled, I just wish I knew how or when it could happen... until then these stories will just continue to repeat themselves

and ColdBud I am one of those kinds that you call religious nuts, however there's nothing nutty about my beliefs

even in scripture it says to handle idiots like this with an iron fist, and condones removing them from the face of this earth

just because I believe in a religion doesn't make me "better" or "less" than you or anyone else... do you believe that the sun will come up tomorrow? does that make you a sun nut??

people instantly think you're some kind of nut because you have religion, not true... look back at the yrs of my post and you'll see they look just like so many other people's here, you have a skewed view of what being a believer is...

BPFROM843 and 80sBaby, you guys are too cute.

"Everyone makes mistakes." That's right, but it doesn't mean you're excused from paying for them. The two of you also assume that all crimes are equal, and that none of us can judge this degenerate because we've all certainly committed a crime of some fashion at some point in our lives. Very true--I have received 2 traffic tickets in my life. Therefore, I am just as "guilty" as Gregory, right? Wrong. A ticket for making an illegal right turn on red at the corner of St. Philip and Calhoun is not in the same universe as speeding through Hampton Park, fatally crashing into an older couple, and then speeding away from the scene of the accident.

And as for your trying to excuse his drug offenses by implying that everyone bought drugs in college... you should get your stereotypes right. Young kids in college who are experimenting with drugs are certainly not buying crack in large quantities. They're buying marijuana mostly.

The attempts of you two to explain away his crimes are laughable at best. Making a few mistakes doesn't result in a 9-page criminal record. Sometimes, the thing speaks for itself.

jammer, I totally get what you are saying about judgment and agree wholeheartedly. I despise it when a person takes the Word out of context if for no other reason but to "prove" their own religiosity. They obviously don't know the difference between judgment and discernment. God gave us the power of discernment so I am sure he wanted us to use it.

With that being said, would you discern that all young, black males are up to no good or just the ones that fit a certain bill? This is an honest question that I feel you are level-headed and open-minded enough to answer in kind.

Leonard Gregory is not a good guy, I know and have experience with this guy. What his nine page rap sheet doesn't show is how many times he was arrested and used his brothers name, Also while we are on the topic of drug dealers. Is anyone else sick of these guys getting caught with $15,000.00 cash $40,000.00 in drugs and where do they live ??? in section 8 housing that we pay for. While they drive around on 26 inch rims and restore old cars they live and eat off our tax dollars ! god something has to change.
Before anybody screams that I am a racist I will just put it out there that I am black, I also own a couple of very successful business, and it is my belief that the reason why white people (which I have nothing against them) hate us blacks so much is because of guy's like this. The guy's that have there pants hanging below there underwear. Rapping and dancing in the street, the same guys hanging out in liquor stores buying crown at 11:00 am. With no job They really cant help but judge us all by these guy's actions, it hard not to be hateful when you are getting up at 5 am to support a family, and you see these guys getting everything for free, and every opportunity in the world. Who could blame those that judge. What else do they have to judge us buy?

Lovely-Hello! I havent posted in a while but this story is a lil close to home so I decided to give my input

I know Gregory personally aand I can say he is no role model citizen (but neither was I when I was that age)I was selling drugs at 23 and got arrested at 24 so who am I to judge this young man; I changed my life "AFTER" being arrested and doing federal prison time for drugs! Im sure that he didnt intentionally set out to murder Mr and Mrs Vice (I know their kids also) but he is responsible never the less. I cant say give him life in prison because I dont honestly believe he desreves it-he does deserve a substantial time in prison for his actions but I dont agree with the majority here (I know that is going to cause problems!!)

I think the problem is we are so quick to place blame on the same old excuses because thats what the news media has programmed us to believe. Mr Gregory isnt a welfare baby or even a young man that grew up in a low income household, his father whom recently passed, was a business owner in downtown chas that owns numerous real estate through out the area. What caused this young man to depend on a life of selling drugs and living the street life? I believe this is the better question that needs an answer to. There are plenty of young men downtown Chas and North Chas that dont neccessarily have to resort to selling drugs or that street lifestyle and have a family and/or support system backing thm but still get sucked in this way of life-WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT THESE YOUNG MEN FROM LIVING THIS WAY OF LIFE??

I agree with Omarro and saying that marches, and midnight basketball arent working. What will work? If we dont find the answer to that question soon then we will continue to have events like this take place in the future. This is bigger than one drug dealer running from the cops and killing two innocent people in downtown. What if this happened on Daniel Island when he was delivering a 'package' and killed one of those residents?

Jammer, I don't post as often as I used too, and I don't recall all of your posts or my replies. I don't recall ever thinking of you as a religious nut thought. Maybe I'm forgeting something, I don't know.

For the record, I don't think all religious people are nuts and I've stated that many times. If your religion gives you what you seek, more power to you. I just think that those that want to force me to live by their beliefs are nuts. People that want to prevent me from doing things, or force me to do things, based on their religious beliefs... those are the nuts. People that believe as they want and leave me alone about it.. I have no problem with that. In many ways I even respect the convictions of such a person.

I didn't want to hijack this thread. As far as the article goes... death penalty. And I DID make that same exact statement about the child molesting white pastor, or what ever he was, earlier today :)

Leonard is a career criminal who the legal systems continues to allow back out on the street to further this career. I don't know if the lax sentencing is a result of some guilt, the fear of being labeled a racist as referenced by jammer, or if our legal system is that incompetent that they cannot seem to get it right. Do they not care about the safety of those of us on the right side of the law? Are they only concerned with their personal gains?

And then we have those people like BPFROM843 who are hell bent on blaming everyone else for their ills. Those are the people that make the community as a whole look bad. They are the ones that give justification to those who like to lump all of us together under the same dysfunctional umbrella. Lovely, just one's that fit a certain bill

as we all know first impressions mean a lot so what they are wearing starts the ball rolling, but that just puts the radar up... not the judgment call, because we all know that truly brilliant criminals know how to blend in with the rest of us... but thugs are not brilliant criminals

a small list...
1. what they are wearing
2. how they carry themselves
3. what time of day or night you see them in conjunction of where they are
4. age compared to how much the rims on their car cost, $10,000 rims on a 19 yr old kids car means he's temporarily higher in the hierarchy of dope dealing... until he gets shot of course

as we all know it's the 16-24 yr olds that usually are the most trouble, close to law enforcement stats...

I grew up here Lovely, there's always been a very large black population and I've always had a ton of white and black friends my entire life... but when I was a kid young black males weren't about killing each other like they are today, I don't know what happened but things are bad wrong now... much of it has to be blamed on the court systems and the judges for letting these people become career criminals to begin with, had they continually removed them from the streets when they actually needed to be removed a precedent would have been set and we would not be seeing what we do today IMHO

it's been let go this far because sooo many whites are scared to be called names... I'm not, I argue these same points FTF... I'm not nor will I ever be a politician, I'm a skilled craftsman that can make a paycheck with or without a boss

WW29485--I am black also and I would hate for someone to judge me based on the actions of others-I understand ur frustration but I dont believe that many drug dealers with access to 40k in cash would be living in section 8 houses. I am a convicted drug dealer and as soon as I got 2500 I gt myself an apartment. The goal of these guys are to project to their peers that they have more money than the next-moving out of the projects, section 8 homes is one of the first things they do. We hear it in the media so much that we start believeing it ourselves but I am here to tell you thats not the case.

Another misconception that we hear so much that immediately think we know the cause:Black on black crime amongst our generation is not caused by drugs!!!I know Im going to get it with this comment but its baloney! When I was selling drugs we never, I REPEAT, NEVER wanted to cause any attetion to ourselves with violence cause all that did was CAUSE ATTENTION TO OURSELVES!! I started to get along with people I didnt get along with before cause all we cared about was making money-Disagreements I had with other drug dealers were few and far in between and I was a pretty big dealer. Point of my post is that we shouldnt believe everything we hear!!

I know I know people dont like to hear this but its the truth! Drugs are not the cause of all this black on black crime!

For the uninitiated South Carolina has a three strikes law that states if you are convicted of three felonies you are eligible for life in prison. The problem like with this guy is, a person will be arrested let's say for drugs, naturally he will bond out. Now he gets arrested again , bonds out then is arrested a third time and bonds out.. now that's three strikes right ? gone for life sorry about your bad luck. NO what happens is the solicitors and the defense attorneys get together and say we will combine all charges into one case, and take him to court that way. It will save time and tax dollars. The problem with that is instead of having three strikes and being gone for life he now has one. So with probation he is right back on the street. Our legal system needs to be a lot tougher ! we wouldn't have all this violent crime if we were frying 8 people a year like Texas.

I am an African American female and I agree totally with Omarion! It starts with us in our households, our communities. We have to be responsible for our actions. I hate to see posts that say "He was a good person"!! REALLY!? Good people do bad things more often than we want to admit, but you Mr. Gregory you are sooooo wrong you can't even attempt to make it right. He needs to be punished and noone should have had to call in a tip for him to be arrested. He should have just turned himself in and try to make things better on the family that lost a mother and father because of HIS actions. I am so tired of seeing these types of stories in the paper. It's depressing!

As for jsmith8993, sometimes parents do the best they can and just have children that are hell bent on doing the wrong thing. That doesn't mean that they were not good parents.I have seen kids come from good families and they are determined to make their parents ashamed of their actions. Some just plain don't care. There are some parents that don't give a damn but not all are like that. BPfrom843-clearly you are crazy as hell! And then you have the nerve to say maybe the Vices caused the accident? Really FOOL!!!?? They were broadsided by someone that ran a red light to get away from the cops. Stop blaming everything on the "white man" and the "crooked cops"!!!! Stand up and be a productive member of society rather than a problem. That's why some of us black folks move to "white" neighborhoods because we don't want our children to be exposed to the type of lifestyle you and your homies love so much! I am not saying that all black neigborhoods are bad but I am saying that most of them are. My son will not be a hustler, a thug, etc that wreacks havoc on the very community that I reside in. Look at the facts and maybe you will better equipped to make an unbiased decision about it all.

ww39485, excellent post on all points.

The city's no chase policy is based on the difficulty to pursue a vehicle on the narrow, crowded city streets without putting others at risk. It seems to be an open invitation to take off like perp Gregory did.

Many arrests, however, are the result of foot pursuits by officers. For one example out of many, three people were arrested in one federal housing apartment a few weeks ago (drug dealing, guns, and probation/parole violations) by an officer after a foot pursuit. The officers are out there - you just don't read about every arrest. MOST of the residents in the projects want the dealers out and deserve a safe place to live as much as any of us in Mt. Pleasant, James Island, etc. The judges and parole boards keep putting convicted criminals back on the streets, and as the chiefs say, they arrest the same perps like Gregory over and over again

for way to long anytime a white person said anything about a black person that was hurting, or killing, his community the white's were instantly called racist with no bassist... lol

we usually aren't allowed to be part of the solution by default, so why try... we'll just be hated and called names anyway,

look what happened to that poor truck driver in LA... and somehow it became all about Rodney King, a repeat criminal, instead... where was the outrage and sympathy for the small white guy that got beaten nearly to death for merely being white??

we see this all over, the Jena6, the brutal murders and torture of Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and Channon Gail Christian, 21... and the list goes on...

look at ole Jammie Fox talking about how MJ was "OURS", owned by the blacks and that he was "lent" to us etc etc etc...

everyone was just as pissed that Elvis OD'd, I still think he was a POS for living and dying in that lifestyle when he had such opportunity to do better

one day we'll stop being divisive just to be divisive and will work together against these thugs, and our legal system...

and ppl like BSFROMTHEHOOD and STUCKINDA80's aren't worth replying too... we'll read about them soon enough

Are ya'll really that ignorant? I mean really? In your view, just how many pages of offences does it take for you to say, "Hmmm, maybe this guy isn't so good after all"? You have the audacity to claim he's not so bad. He is the exact epitome of what's wrong in this world today. Not accountable for any wrongdoing. He is the lowest of scum and should never see the light of day again. And for you to come to his defense speaks loudly of your own convictions. ( I'm truly not impressed)!

this guy should be executed asap. its a very clear cut case of a man who was in no way a positive influence on society who never has nor will do anything with his life. He has now killed 2 innocent people due to his chosen lifestyle and nobody here can come up with a valid reason to keep this man around anymore. Why in the world would we want to have him suck money out of the system for the next 30 years when his "life" for all intents and purposes is clearly over. I hope the system works quickly to convict and execute this man so my hard earned tax dollars don't buy thousands of ham sandwiches to feed this guy for the next 25+ years. We need to get back to basics in this country...if the punishments for crime are severe enough we will either snuff out the scum over time or the people who had chosen this lifestyle will come around as they will see the consequences are far worse than the rewards. C'mon guys its a simple concept...if you talk back to mom and she quietly says "now don't do that again" chances are you will. I was caught with a swift backhand by dad growing up for talking back to mom and in an instant realized "WOW..that wasnt worth it!"

I knew this man as a child. Everything was given to him on a platter. Nicest clothes, shoes etc.. He was a rude, disrespectful child and never treated any of his classmates with any kindness. He gave the same behavior to his teachers. I hate to admit it...but I knew then that he was going to end up "No Good". He was spoiled and was accepted for the way he was with never any consequences by his parents. His teachers and principals tried their very best but to no avail. I've taught for 25 years and this was the only child that I have ever taught that I never, ever wanted to see again. I wish that they had put him in prison years ago and maybe he could have been given some kind of help or rehabilatation. Leonard, you need to spend the next 30 years in prison and try to make yourself a better person.

He at no time has shown any remorse for his crimes, but he has proven to be a big cry baby for his "poor hurt leg" wah wah wah. For the people that he has hurt he has no compassion. Most of the comments have been reasonably intelligent and I commend omarro for his comments because he spoke the truth. For 80sbaby and BPFROM843 you both should have been in that car that Mr and Mrs. Vice were in and let's see how good you both would have felt had other families taken the same stance that the two of you have taken. This is sad to say the least. My heart goes out to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Vice. The most hurting part of all, is that this criminal did not have the heart to stop when the accident happened or turn himself in afterwards. It took him from Sunday up until yesterday to do so. Then he did not due it then. A tip help cops to arrest him. So to the ones that are defending him, take inventory of yourself as well as what Mr. Gregory did. If you can find any right in this, then something is terribly wrong with you. This is heartless. I am black and am tired of this. It has to stop. I am also tired of the white's labeling us hard working black citizens in the same group with these thugs.

Just a few months ago, a white guy was involved in a high speed chase with police after a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend. He ran from the cops and killed an innocent black lady and critically injured her daughter. This happened on Hwy 78 up near Trident Hospital. This was sad also. Then the white guy girlfriend gets on the news and says that he was a GOOD GUY. If he was a good guy, when the police responded to the call of the domestic violence, he would not have got in his car sped off, and at the moment did not care about his life or endangering the lives of someone else.

Ignorance and these types of heartless acts has no respect of color. It comes in any color.

our country deserves much more respect than a mere proper noun, hence why you see it capitalized everywhere except among the disgruntled or ignorant

it's always been an etiquette thing since it's beginning, to honor one's country... which is also why u'll see me use lower case for communist dictatorship type countries

it is very disrespectful to your, and our, country not to spell it properly... especially if you are doing it on purpose... millions died for our country over the years, it's the least we can do to show our appreciation for our freedoms that we all share

btw notice my own nick is in lower case, our country is much larger than any of us

Obviously the prospect of prison/jail is no deterrent for these career criminals. Maybe if we didn't provide better living situations for them inside of prison than they have on the streets then they would try a little harder to stay out of trouble. Also, if we brought back hard labor and chain gangs then I think these thugs would think twice before stealing, shooting, and selling drugs. I have NO sympathy for any criminal. Every person in this country has the ability within themselves to make something good out of themselves if they really want. Why should society and the government continue to give these people opportunities when they don't even believe in themselves? It's just a shame that this country will never change and these people will continue to be leeches on society because we let them.

Come on 80's baby, you can't defend this at all. I have lived in Charleston for almost 2 years, and I have never seen such behavior from a group of people as I've seen in the young black men who live here. Not all of them, mind you, not even most of them, just enough so that the untrained eye get find something to adhere to a racist stereotype. These young men almost revel in being ghetto, being nonproductive and criminal. Like it or not, we are judged, as a race and as a people by the actions of these fools. That isn't right and it isn't fair, but that's life. We have to do better than we are doing. When you look at the schools that aren't educating, they are our schools. When you look at the projects and who lives there, those are our people. When you look at crime statistics, disease statistics, graduation rates, out-of-wedlock births, any social measure of achievement we are always at the bottom. I'm not trying to denigrate our people, but we have to stop this foolishness ourselves. There is racism in the world and on this board but we can no longer use it as our default excuse when things do not go our way. There is nothing racist about a fat-ass thug who killed two people because he was scared that they were going to run his plates. He is a coward that ran from his responsibility to the people that he killed. He makes every young black man like me, Stanish, Burton and the other MEN who post and defend our people look bad.

80'sBaby, you do have a right to post if one agrees or not. Wishing one died in the car with the Vice's is beneath common decency! The Vice's did NOT ask for their lives to be taken away from them by this criminal thug. He does NOT value life whatsoever. He only wanted to get away and not be CAUGHT! If he would've come forward and said he was truly SORRY, then that would've said there is some GOOD and even HOPE for him. His SELFISH actions are to BLAME for this most heinous crime! As omarro1974 stated, I'm as BLACK as they come and have taken many to task on these forums even being labeled a RACIST when I stood up for what was the TRUTH! There is still HOPE for even him and others, and I pray that others learn from this TRAGEDY so we will NOT have repeats like this in the future!

I second that - very well said. I am just sick to my stomach about the 15 year old who was murdered a few days ago. There are many more like Gregory and whoever killed that child, and they have no respect for the sanctity of human life. It's NOT just in one community, one town or one race. This is becoming a frightening world, and no one seems to know how to make it stop. The alternative is to lock them up and hope they stay in prison and don't hurt anyone one else. Gregory obviously was and is a danger to society, but he was released back into our community, and because of his choices, two wonderful people have been taken from their family. Sad, very sad.

After reading these posts it's not too difficult to determine who has a functional
brain and who doesn't.

omarro1974 offered a well written opinion that displayed a level of understanding and real compassion that seems uncommon in these times.

BPFROM843 and 80sBaby displayed no level of understanding and a total lack of compassion for Mr. and Mrs.Vice,as evidenced by the poorly written rants that they produced.

What possible excuse can be offered in defense of sending two people, who have worked all their lives, to an early grave, when they could conceivably have had many years left to enjoy the fruits of their labors?

My condolences and sympathy goes to the Vice family.

I know the family of Leonard Gregory. This is a fine and outstanding family in the Charleston area. He was raised by a father and mother along with his siblings. He was not from a single parent home. His father died about a year ago and left a good legacy. He was well known in the Charleston area for his work in the black community and with the teenagers and young ones.
Sometimes, no matter what you do or how hard you work with your children and try to give them a decent upbringing, they go wrong. In no way should his family be held for what he did. It was bad and is not condoned. Parents can only be accountable for their children until they are at least 18. I have heard many parents try to steer their children in a positive direction and they will say"I'm grown now, let me do it my way", theres is nothing else to do, especially when they are away form home.
Many times the company or associates we hang around with will determine how we will do if we don't change. Everyone in the family is angry and hurt about this situation and how it happened.THe school of herd knocks has many students that have to learn the hard way, and this is one. THis was an inexcusable act.

But no matter how hurt, the Vice family has suffered a loss that will never be replaced.
I know there will be many more negative comments on this post, but I have had my say and you can't unring a bell. If we could, Mr. and Mrs. Vice would still be here.

Kontact, I meant to say thank you for the information on Leonard also. I know how he was raised and know the family very well, I am a cousin to his grandmother and his mother. I know as I have stated earlier, that he was not raised to be the way he was. He came from a good upbringing and was loved by the family and his uncles who tried to steer him in the right way. THis was as shocking to some of us as it was to the area. Many family members found out by watching the news.
