The Drop In
The Drop In makes a compelling case to do as the restaurant says. Hey, drop in, they dare ya.
No disappointments here. The Drop In, operated by four partners - all Folly Beach locals, deconstructed the old Dolphin Deli, adding plenty of seating, a bar, some really good sangria (more on that later) and a first-rate, tasty menu.
And it might be the only restaurant to offer "beach delivery," that is, delivery straight to your blanket, lounge chair or towel as you relax beachside. Guess the Edge of America meets the Edge of Your Appetite.
Pick from appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches and specials. Tableside, service merits a small, complimentary bowl of kosher and bread-and-butter pickles, baby gerkins and pepperoncinis. A pretty good starter, especially followed with warm pimento dip ($3.99) and toasted pita tips.
The sandwich board, the pride and joy of the Drop Inn, is the restaurant's best measuring stick. They've got a Pholly Cheese Steak ($7.99), true to its Philly roots with flank steak and Cheez Whiz rolled up on a hoagie, and a turkey sandwich - avocado, bacon, cream cheese, dijon mustard - so popular that ownership jokes about renaming their restaurant to The $8.75 Turkey Club.
Filling out the menu: the Drop In Club ($7.99), stacked with turkey, genoa salami, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, pepperoncinis and greens; a pimiento BLT ($6.50); cheeseburger ($7.99); and stuffed portobello sandwich ($7.99). And sure, the double decker grilled PB&J ($4.99) might qualify as a sandwich, but we loved it as a dessert - rich, creamy and gooey, laden with strawberry preserves.
And about the sangria, it's made from red wine and locally plucked, organic watermelon - a great summertime treat.
