Governor's new tactic: Not talking
By Glenn Smith , Yvonne Wenger
COLUMBIA — As calls for his resignation mounted Wednesday, Gov. Mark Sanford finally decided to clam up about his Argentine mistress and other extramarital transgressions, ending a weeklong purging that has gutted his marriage and political career.
While Sanford huddled behind closed doors, a majority of his fellow Republicans in the state Senate called on the governor to step down.
Powerful Senate leader Glenn McConnell said he believes Sanford "has lost the support of the people that is needed to govern," and he urged the governor "to do the right thing." He stopped short of calling for Sanford's ouster, but he questioned whether Sanford can effectively lead in the wake of indiscretions that embarrassed the governor and the state.
Sanford's attempt to defuse the situation with a tell-all interview with The Associated Press this week appears to have backfired. His latest confessions about his Argentine "soul mate" and dalliances with other women provided new fodder for critics and weakened his already tenuous support.
The governor is now trying a new tactic: staying quiet. His office issued a terse statement indicating he had said all he intends to say about his love life. Sanford also backed out of a promise to AP to release personal financial records proving he did not use state money for trips to see his mistress.
Joel Sawyer, Sanford's press secretary, said all pertinent records were turned over instead to the State Law Enforcement Division, which is reviewing Sanford's travel records to make sure no state laws were broken. That review could be completed as soon as today.
"The governor has given a full and truthful account, and he is finished discussing this matter," Sawyer said. "He is focused on being governor, on rebuilding his marriage and on building back the trust of South Carolinians."

Whether Sanford can, in his words, put that genie back in the bottle remains to be seen. The Statehouse corridors were all but empty as he huddled in his office with Sen. Tom Davis, a Beaufort Republican who is the governor's close friend and former chief of staff. An aide said Sanford was unavailable to speak to the press.
That didn't stop media trucks from lining up outside the Statehouse, where a group of smiling promoters for a book offering cheating tips to philanderers handed out "I love Argentina" bumper stickers. And it didn't stop the slow drip of details about other supposed indiscretions Sanford has only hinted about.
The Washington Times, for instance, reported that Sanford had a brief romance with an American businesswoman in June 1995 while he was traveling in Latin America on a congressional trade mission trip. The newspaper, quoting anonymous sources, reported that Sanford had a romantic encounter with the woman in Chile, but she broke off contact after learning he wasn't single, as she had been led to believe.
Sanford has acknowledged that he "crossed lines" with other women but insists he only cheated sexually with his mistress, Maria Belen Chapur.
Until Wednesday, Sanford had been freely telling his story, attempting to come clean after disappearing on an extended tryst in Argentina while his staff thought he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
In a series of interviews with the AP this week, Sanford laid out his thoughts and feelings in sometimes lurid or odd detail. For example, he said close Christian friends advised him to end the affair immediately and used graphic, figurative terms on how to do so — "the first step is, you shoot her. You put a bullet through her head," he said he was told.
The words were not meant literally, but reveal how dramatically Sanford described the saga.
The admissions have left many in South Carolina wondering just who is this man they twice elected to the state's highest office. For years he has been known as a principled, if stubborn, conservative heralded for his disdain of big government and thrifty ways. In only a week, he has gone from a potential presidential candidate to someone who more closely resembles a love-struck teen, a man some observers have dubbed "the luv guv."
"We have become an international embarrassment," said Rep. Vida Miller, a conservative Democrat from Pawleys Island.
Davis, perhaps Sanford's closest supporter, said the outcome of SLED's review will help him decide what position to take on his friend staying in office.
Others, however, have clearly made up their minds already.
South Carolina Republican Party Chairwoman Karen Floyd said she has seen a trend emerge among GOP leaders.
"There is clearly a growing view that the time may have come for Governor Sanford to remove himself and his family from the limelight so that he can devote his efforts full-time to repairing the damage in his personal life," she said.
Sanford has rebuffed calls for his resignation and has said he has no plans to step aside.
The capital city buzzed Wednesday with talk of a possible option for removing him against his will. South Carolina's constitution says a governor can be removed from office if a majority of the state treasurer, comptroller, attorney general and secretary of state declare he is unable to carry out his duties.
Some contend, however, that passage was intended only for a governor in ill health, and it remains unclear whether the four men in question would even attempt such a move.
Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom said he thinks it's a mistake for a sitting governor to quit with 18 months left in his term. "Under the current economic conditions that we're in, that would be even a larger detriment to the state."
Meanwhile, Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Isle of Palms, said the Sanfords, especially Jenny, have reached out to him and his wife for counseling and advice. Campsen and his wife, Lalla Lee, are longtime friends of the Sanfords.
"We're trying to provide some counseling and advice, with the goal toward keeping this family together and helping shield the children from the things they should be shielded from," he said.
Campsen said he believes the Sanfords' marriage can survive, but it will take some work.
"Infidelity can be forgiven" if there is repentance, he said, but without it, there are consequences.

Um, let's see. NOW Markey Mark is not talking...he is such a martyr um, idiot, no, I think martyr... No wait a minute, HE is the victim, not his wife or family...clearly, it is Mark who is NOW the victim and because of this he should stay in office, excel at his job and not talk.
Sanford, so glad you came up with this brilliant idea after those crying puss press conferences and interviews we all looked so forward to each day. What will the people on the other side of the globe do for their daily humor now??
I am thinking the folks of South Carolina will have the last laugh on you before it is all said and done. Clearly you won't have to tote another pig to the state legislature, you can just walk there yourself and show them what a real pig looks like.

That's almost as funny as Sanford's original line about hiking the AT.
It is amazing at the fools that continue to support and defend SanFRAUD. Tom Davis, a fellow hypocrite and liar, is only looking out for his mancation blowing off buddy because Marky Mark covered for him years ago.
The other fools in the General Assembly and in high office obviously don't have the spine to make a simple decision -
What is best for South Carolina?
The answer - Call for SanFRAUD's resignation or start the process to impeach the guy.

The citizens of SC should band together and IMPEACH this busta that is making a MOCKERY of himself, his wife, his sons and the state of SC.
What kind of a LEADER states that he CRIED for FIVE days at the side of his mistress AFTER his wife asked him NOT to visit her during their separation????? What kind of a LEADER would APOLOGIZE to his MISTRESS before doing so PUBLICLY to his WIFE and SONS???? And what IDIOT admits to the AP that he will TRY to FALL back IN LOVE with his wife??? Jenny has been strong and she should SERVE this busta with DIVORCE papers for his TOTAL LACK OF RESPECT for her and their children.
Gov. Sanford has it bad and since he's NOT in love with his wife, he shouldn't try to make a LOVELESS marriage work. He's FOUND HIS SOUL MATE therefore, he should go to Argentina and spend the REST of his life with HER.
Be a MAN Mark and tell your wife the two of you are DONE as you don't love her ANYMORE and it SHOWS. LOL otherwise you would have HONORED her request to NOT go see your mistress and it's obvious you think MORE of the mistress than your wife so do your wife a favor and SET HER FREE.
The WORST PERSON OF THE WEEK award goes to YOU Governor Sanford for being a COMPLETE JERK!!!! Step Down and Give Jenny Her FREEDOM......Go to your soulmate and live happily ever after. LOL

Everyone who is calling for him to resign let me ask you this. What would you do? You get caught with a person who is not your spouse. What do you do? Your job tells you it's up to you. Do you do the "honorable" thing? No, you don't. You stay and work. Is he a screw up? Yes. Did he use money for the trips? Yes. Should he be fired? Probably, but like I said YOU, ME and EVERY other person out there would NOT quit. So stop it. All you holier than thou people out there:"oh I would quit right away", I call BS! Stop it.

No one is more HOLIER than thou than the Governor, who blasted Bill Clinton, thus since HE dished it, he should be able to take it and he's done FAR WORST than what Clinton did. Clinton DIDN'T say he will TRY to fall back in love with Hilary...LOL this man is a JOKE and he should be IMPEACHED since he doesn't have sense enough to walk away on his own. When you state others should QUIT and then you become GUILTY of the SAME thing then YOU should QUIT. The Governor is being a HYPOCRITE.
Why should he be ALLOWED to hang onto his job when he's PROVEN he's a LIAR and places his LOVE life over what is BEST for the state of SC??? Sanford HAS to go and if he doesn't leave on his own the CITIZENS should band together and DEMAND he be GONE. If a man doesn't LOOK OUT for his OWN household, what will he do for/to the CITIZENS who MEAN NOTHING to him. We know he DOESN'T love his wife because he's gotten SPRUNG on his MISTRESS. The CRYBABY should GO. IMPEACH SANFORD NOW!!!!!

Doesn't anyone see what this is?!? THE HEAD OF SLED IS FRIENDS WITH SANFORD...HE OWES HIS JOB TO SANFORD...he already said he "didn't see any evidence of wrongdoing" today even though the Gov already ADMITTED to the $3k of personal use and PAID IT BACK. The call went out to investigate his travel records on Tuesday evening and they are DONE evaluating OVER EIGHT YEARS worth of financial receipts not even 2 days later? COME ON! This is a JOKE investigation. Someone needs to seriously look at this stuff from a forensic accounting background. SLED says that they are "being pulled into a political realm" and don't want to do the investigation. If they can't see that the $3k he already paid back for the Argentina trip last year was misappropriation of funds then I can already tell you what that "investigation" is going to yeild. NOTHING...they had better be careful though because CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) will be looking as well and they will really look and then SLED will have it's own questions to answer!

He treated his gal real nice on our dime. For all those still saying that he was just "mixing business with pleasure" see below from the post & courier yesterday:
Commerce Marketing and Communications Manager Kara Borie told The Post and Courier Friday morning that Sanford directed the agency to arrange meetings in Argentina for him while he and state officials were going to Brazil on a trade meeting.
The trade meeting was set for BRAZIL, he ASKED to go to Argentina, which means we not only paid for the hotel with the mistress but we took a bunch of "business people" out to lunch / diner in Argentina as "cover"! That whole Argentina leg of the trip was a disguise for him to go see his mistress. AND...why does he get to PAY IT BACK?!? Do you think you or I would just be able to pay it back when caught?! Do you think he would have paid it back if not caught?!?!

"Leaving On A Jet Plane"
All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say good-bye
But the dawn is breaking, it's early morn'
The taxi's waiting, he's blowing his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Theres so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go I'll think of you
Every song I sing I sing for you
When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
And close your eyes and I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I don't have to leave alone
About the times that I won't have to say
Oh kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
I'm leaving on a jet plane

I don't see any benefits or understand any reasons for Sanford to stay as governor. In my opinion his political career is over and he needs to face reality. He has shown he is incapable of conducting himself in a manner expected of those in high office.
The best thing he could do for himself, the state and his supporters is to insure a smooth transition of power. He should do this and get his personal life in order, seek other endeavors or just retire.
There is no way to set this clock back. Life is to short to live it in turmoil.

If the "holier than thou" politicians that supposedly run our state spent a little time outside the patrician districts of Charleston and Columbia, not to mention Buenos Aires and New York, they might begin to have some perspective. For the most part, South Carolina is a vast backwater where opportunity does not exist, and where any vision of the 21st Century's global competitive landscape is absent. These problems aren't solved on Dept of Commerce boondoggles to the far flung reaches of the globe, or at the back bar at the Carolina Yacht Club, or the Capital City Club. We need to attract investment, capitalize on our port, educate our people, build infrastructure, promote the natural beauty of our state and muster the political will to bring business to SC. Sanford was a politically neutered lame duck before he got caught as the definitive hypocrite. The General Assembly accomplished next to nothing in the 2009 session largely due to the games Sanford played with the Stimulus Package, all in the name of his absurd political aspirations. This is silly and South Carolina is becoming the laughing stock of the country.
Mr. Bauer, Mr. McConnell, Mr. Harrell: Get it in gear and move forward, or get out.

No wonder he wanted to use the stimulus money to pay down the State's debt. It is not really cheap chasing skirts all over the globe. Someone needs to examine his State travel expenses in addition to his personal financial records. While he was traveling the world looking for romance, the citizens of South Carolina were loosing their jobs and saying a prayer that the voice of reason would prevail and the Federal stimulus money would be accepted. I knew during that whole ordeal that something was just not right about him ... mentally.
"The capital city buzzed Wednesday with talk of a possible option for removing him against his will. This man needs a mental evaluation. It is frightening to me that he is being allowed to continue in office without one. No one in their right mind disappears the way that he did. What if another 9/11 would have happened while he was gone and the airports would have been locked down with him out of the country : and no one would even have known he was out of the country? What if some kind of attack happened in Argentina and no one knew he was even there? What if something happened to someone in his family? I know with my (State) job, if I were to disappear for a week and not tell anyone, I would be fired ... especially if I had taken off, out of the country with my boyfriend and left my 4 children and husband behind.

'IMPEACH' is thrown around these topics so much it makes me laugh.
The only embarrassment in this whole situation was to his family. If a person outside of your own family embarrasses you, then I suggest seeing a dermatologist to find out how to get thicker skin.
The backseat police that come up with rants of prosecution without any wrongdoing discovered at this time. Take another civics class on SC law and this time listen to the instructor.
He was not AWOL - he told his staff he was taking a vacation - elected officials still get these. The BCB received his money for the portion of the one trip and closed that book.
If you want to get technical, let's look at the trips of every politician in the state. If they have ever gone on a trip to another state or country for business pertaining to their position, tax dollars paid for them to get there. Taking a personal trip in between could be considered n abuse of tax dollars. Without the business trip the actual trip for pleasure would have cost more. Any official that fits this bill used tax dollars to subsidize a personal trip. So let's investigate every trip taken by every official and impeach the whole lot of them. Repub, Demos and those that ride the rail in between should be investigated. Why leave it to just the governor let's move up the chain to the federal level. Let's go all the way to the top. Let's impeach the current president for using tax dollars to take personal trip to New York. That date now turns out to be one of the most expensive dates in Presidential history. It does not have to be with a mistress or soul mate to abuse tax dollars.
Still trying to see where he lied...If he lied, then why are people surprised, what politician has never lied?
So until real evidence supports impeachment...

"Sanford has rebuffed calls for his resignation and has said he has no plans to step aside."
That's because the political class believes that "We the sheeple" won't do a damned thing.
We're working too hard to pay the taxes and our grocery bill to have the time to take too much action.
Sanford won on the platform of fiscal conservatism, the idea that government can function efficiently without bankrupting it's citizens. So far, we still have a General Assembly that spends our money like Paris Hilton on a good drunk to keep themselves in office. The fact that this cash comes by force from people who work doesn't make a damned bit of difference to the political class. The fact that YOU are doing without, your family is doing without so these dolts can live the high life on your dime should make your blood boil...especially on the weekend of the 4th of July.
Sanford needs to go. Period. He violated the public trust, and then has the audacity to rub the state's nose in his offence. You see what he thinks of his own family, of you, and of anyone else.
Quite frankly, 90% of the entire S.C. General Assembly needs to be flushed out of the sewer that we call the State House. Sadly, the "sheeple" are sold on the same liars taking $20 from them to bribe them with $1.

charleston, you can defend him all you want, but the fact remains he is a hypocrite- plain and simple. He preached personal responsibility and fiscal contstaint and management, yet he uses our state tax dollars for his dalliances. I don't care if he used $100 or $10,000- it is hypocrisy plain and simple.
If you still support him in light of all of this (and I am not even touching on abandoning his state, disregard and disrespect for his family, etc.), then you are truly one of the sheeple.

Charleston1960... why all of the sudden has the Gov. refused to release his financial statements? which up until late yesterday he had said that he would be glad to release them. Is it because he did not personally pay for any of his trips to see his lover? Including at least 5 trips overseas (1st class airfare + accommodations), and 2 trips to New York. He has stated that he paid cash for all the trips to Buenos Aires, so that his wife would not know about the travel. Well all he has to do is to show where he got the cash for those trips. Easy enough if you are indeed telling the truth... which I highly doubt. I am sure that the good citizens of SC paid for all of his travel overseas. This is not about sex or about lying about sex. I could care less about sex. But, the state of SC is a fiscal mess! And to use taxpayer dollars to fund his liaisons, while telling the many unemployed that they should not have benefits extended to feed their children is not just sinister... it is illegal!
I can't believe that you people think the impeachment would be about sex and lying about sex. Although most of you thought Pres. Clinton should be impeached for the same thing as the Gov.
PS, Clinton did not steal the taxpayers money to fund his BJ!
But, the GOP led congress spent 60 million to find out that he did get a BJ.

39 trips for Sanford with no security in '09
Gov. Mark Sanford left the Governor's Mansion without a security escort, 38 times in 2008. In the first six months of this year, he left the mansion without security, 39 times.
Those trips are about one-third of the 195 trips Sanford made from the mansion, with or without security, over that 18-month period.
An analysis of the records shows Sanford logged 195 comings and goings during the 18-month period. He had security with him 119 times and was unaccompanied 76 times.
The State's count did not include trips on which Sanford was accompanied by his wife or any of their four sons.
Keel's agency, along with the State Law Enforcement Division and the Department of Natural Resources, is responsible for protecting the governor.

Why should he release PERSONAL finances to the public? If he used tax payer money, the Budget and Control would have that on record. The B&C tracks ALL spending of state dollars. If he used PERSONAL, then who cares and it is of no use to the public. If the Budget and Control board shows that he has not used state funds for his exotic excursions, pray tell me how looking at his PERSONAL finances is going to show that he used STATE funds. A lot of people are blasting him with assumptions that he is hiding the use of state funds which to this day is still not a fact.
I will give you Clinton did not steal anything for his fun. He did not get impeached for his sexual liaisons. He got impeached for perjury and impeding an investigation... Sanford has not done that and Sanford has not been proven to have stolen anything either. At this time or at least there is no fact that he has.
Once again if he used PERSONAL money than why bother him. If he used state and is covering it up then he is fair game.
I stand by my statement he has done nothing impeachable in accordance with the law as of this time. Something may come up and until it does...

I do not support his 'exotic' actions in Argentina or where ever, I am just stating the fact is they have nothing impeachable on him at this time. He has not thwarted an investigation or lied before a grand jury investigation panel.
There is a reason why McConnell wants to change the Constitutional law concerning the Governor leaving without giving notice. The current law does not make it mandatory.
The bible thumpers are the ones calling for his stepping done for his actions with the mistress. I am not bible thumping; I am SC code of law thumping. The only law he broke was the adultery law which is a misdemeanor in SC. In fact you can go to jail for some driving offense longer than the charges for his crime. So if we are to oust people in state jobs for misdemeanors, don't get a ticket.

Dear Buzzin ... ,
Yes there was a day that State employees were "golden" in that jobs were secure and you could pretty much do what you pleased with no fear of being let go as long as your job was getting done. Right now that is not the case ... at least where I work it is not. Our department has been cut so slim that we work endless hours to cover for those let go : our offices are like a ghost town with the same workload. I would not dare crack my lips about it for fear I would be included on the next round of cuts. I am surrounded by constant layoffs and furloughs with no end in sight. I think if you were to ask the hundreds of teachers/educators that have no job next year you would find job security is not something any State Employee has the luxury of these days. I can't speak for every agency but I know in the one I work for, Human Resources has gained a whole new life in monitoring job performance and attendance and when it is time to cut, they do it without pity.
So, as a State Employee, I would only ask that the rules apply to EVERYONE. I think a lot of the changes I am experiencing are painful but necessary for the greater good. I believe if everyone sacrifices a little bit that it will save jobs overall. I feel like I have contributed to the cause by taking on more work, with no raise in years and never ending furlough days. The obvious solution is to find another job but HELLO : there are no jobs out there due to the wonderful economy Sanford (and Bush) has given us : all the while chasing his "soul mate" around the world. Then all this happens and it is like Sanford wants all of us to make sacrifices but does not feel he needs to put his own needs to the side for the greater good. He actually took off in the middle of a major economic crisis. People in this state were being laid off while he was romancing his girlfriend on taxpayer money.
So yes : Buzzin there was a time there was dead weight in the State. Probably when you were there that was the case. I wonder if they replaced you when you left:..

My full belief is that it happens all the time and with every official that has the opportunity to use tax dollars for trips. I would be willing to say that everyone in office is guilty of that at least one trip where the tab, for wife, family and perhaps mistress for the unmarried and even those married, was picked up by the citizens of SC. If we are to look at spending state dollars for personal use while on official business, we need to look at every official that went on a trip paid with tax dollars. In the case of using tax dollars for personal, it should not matter whether the person is using it for his wife or in his case his mistress. The law? He paid it back which was okay by the B&C. If further investigation uncovers more then roll out the chains. And leather outfits if it appeals to everyone else.
Most people do not realize the good that Sanford has done for the state by this. I would be willing to bet that no one is taking trips and spending extra money due to fear. He may very well have enforced reduction in travel spending with elected officials saving the taxpayers money. And he did not have to use a veto to accomplish it.

Charleston, once again, just because others do it, does that make it right? Especially one who so highly trumpeted fiscal responsibility? Is that responsible? Hell no. Even you can't defend that. Secondly, I really hate when people try to argue that all is good since he gave the money back. Once again, let me try to explain. If I took $3,000 from my employer, got caught, then said, "oh heck I will pay it back", go ahead and do it, apologize, and expect all to be fine? No, of course not. Of course it is not just two people ... I was more referring to the leadership as a whole and path the overall leadership took SC down. I would love to put a dollar amount on the stimulus debate (fight) that Sanford imposed on this state. All the man hours and general sessions and revising and rerevising all of the deadbeat (right buzzin?) state employees had to do ... that is in between furlough days and layoffs. The cost is in the millions and in the end we all knew we were going to take that money. There is no way SC could survive not taking it but having to pay it back anyway. We would have been fools not to take it ... we were going to have to pay for it anyway.
If a lowly, deadbeat, bottom feeding state employee like me could see that why couldn't the golden boy Sanford see it. Probably because all he was doing was trying to take a stand so if he ever ran for President or VP he could say he did not want to take it but had to. Clearly the vision of a man who never worried about job security or a furlough in his own life and could care less what his politically motivated decisions had on everyone else's.
But for the record ... I think he should leave because I think he is mentally unstable for obvious reasons. He is in a high ranking position and he should be available 24/7 ... and when he is not everyone should know where he is : bottom line.

I mean I do not care about Sanfords sexual activities, but it is what they say and actually do. I mean 1st Sanford said that he will not take some of the Stimulus money that the Obama/Dems had set aside for state of South Carolina as part of the Stimulus package. Thus depriving State of SC from 10s of 1000s of high paying Job and also depriving 10s of 1000s of South Carolina residents who have lost their Job due to no fault of their own from greater unemployment benefits at the time that the state desperately needs these new Jobs and additional payments, specially when considering the FACT that SC has the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the nation.

Easy tiger. Don't know when the last time you looked for a job was but due to downsizing in the public and private sectors organizations are not only not hiring : they are actually doing away with positions. Yes, you could always run down to McDonalds and flip some burgers but the reality is that you could work there around the clock and not make enough to support yourself ... much less yourself and your family. And clearly you have not stepped foot in a grocery store or paid a daycare bill in years. Personally, due to furloughs my check has gone down while the price of grocery's, gas and daycare have creped up steadily. I would love to change jobs in an effort to make more money but as I said before ... there are no jobs out there ... few and far between.
Let me put it to you like this. When you have a janitor (they call them day porters now)position open and you have 80 applicants and 10 actually have MBA's that is an indication of a problem. People are desperate to find work with benefits for their families and acting like the financial mess this State is in does not exist is crazy.
So forgive those of us who work hard and are trying to get ahead while the economic current keeps pulling us back. Also, just overlook my frustration that the person who is suppose to be leading out of this mess is chasing his fantasy to the other side of the world. Good thing we did not have another 9/11 situation on our hands : he would have been stuck over there and he would have had no way to get back!!!
I may not know exactly how to solve the problem but certainly acting like it does not exist isn't going to help!

Dearest Governor Sanford,
I hate changing my perspective on your actions as our Governor, but, like you, I know it is not only politically proper, and in fact, morally superior, to defy my fellow citizens in South Carolina, including my own family, while asking for forgiveness of your small "mistakes", my dear governor.
I really hope you stay in office, Sir, as long as you possibly can, due to the fact that my day to day life has been so incredibly boring as an unemployed widow. You may know how it is, Sir, from others who were left bereft and poor; (I "betcha", as Governor Palin might say, that you have shook the hands of a few of us), those who keep trying to keep a roof over own heads and get our own children through good public schools. (My oldest graduated Summa Cum Laud this year from college.)
I am so grateful that my life is so full of excitement right now as I have the opportunity to get to see and witness a real politician continue to show us all who he really is. Oh, please Governor Sanford! We are all so anxious for some new fodder to keep our boring lives in check.
Please stay as our Governor to take our minds off of the facts of day to day poverty.
Thank you, thank you, thank you,
J

AMEN!!!! The man is clearly in the grip of mental illness. He is too unstable to lead. Were he active military, he'd have been ROC last week.
