Furman will have a new scoreboard, including a new video display screen, at Paladin Stadium this fall. It will be installed in time for Furman's first home game with Presbyterian on Sept. 5.

Athletic spokesman Hunter Reid said the school would not detail how much the scoreboard would cost. Former Furman teammates Jeff Blankenship and Kennet Goldsmith initiated the secured funding for the new scoreboard.

It's the first scoreboard upgrade since the late 1980s in the stadium, which opened in 1981.

College basketball

Clemson's 7-2 center, Catalin Baciu, is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder.

The school said that Baciu had the surgery last month. The school said the sophomore backup from Romania should see limited action in workouts the next two to three weeks as he heals.

Baciu played sparingly last year as a freshman, seeing 44 minutes in nine games and averaging 2 points and 2 rebounds during his time. He missed the first five games of last season because he was serving a suspension because of his time spent with a professional team in Romania.

--Winthrop will open the season in the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament.

Winthrop made its first-ever Division I postseason appearance last March, facing Georgetown in the WNIT. This time, the Eagles play at Georgia Tech on Nov. 13.

The Preseason WNIT field includes 11 teams that took part in postseason play this past year.
