Center for Photography displays work of Gary Geboy
The Charleston Center for Photography, 645 King St., is currently showing "The Lost," a photographic exhibit by Gary Geboy.
With this exclusive exhibition, Geboy introduces a new series of abstract settings and subjects. "The work spans thirty years of haunting images and hidden, forgotten and ignored subjects. They depart from his own dreams and wanderings to arrive in places unfamiliar and difficult to define. For Geboy, 'The Lost' represents people and places lost to time. The images are understood not by their surroundings or context but by the memories that they suggest," says Charleston Center for Photography Director Stacy Pearsall.
From traveling the world as a cinematographer documenting the Peace Corps to being part of a National Gallery of Art exhibit on ancient Mexico, to creating environmental portraits, and now views of his own Lowcountry backyard, Geboy has had an eventful 30 year career as a photographer. His work has been seen at the Smithsonian's Rock and Soul Museum in Memphis, Tenn.; the National Park Services visitor center at the Manzanar National Historic Site in California; and the Kings Mountain National Military Park in Blacksburg, S.C. His book of images, "Transfer Of Grace," is featured on the international Holga photography Web site, www.holgainspire.com, and he is currently a finalist for ForeWord Magazine's photography book of the year award.
The exhibit will be on display at the center until the end of the month. For more information, call 720-3105 or visit www.ccforp.com.
