Governor comes clean
SANFORD: Mistress is 'soul mate'; lines crossed with other women
COLUMBIA — Gov. Mark Sanford, already struggling to salvage his family and his political career after admitting a scandalous affair, added explosive details Tuesday, including more visits with the mistress he calls his "soul mate" and additional women in his past.
AP
In an interview over two days with The Associated Press, Gov. Mark Sanford said he still hopes to reconcile with his wife, on the heels of admitting that his Argentine mistress is his 'soul mate' and that he had 'crossed lines' with a handful of other women.
The once-promising presidential prospect said he is committed to reconciling with his wife, but professed to The Associated Press his continued love for the Argentine woman at the center of the firestorm that gutted his political future.
In emotional interviews over two days, he said he would die "knowing that I had met my soul mate."
Sanford also said that he "crossed the lines" with a handful of other women during 20 years of marriage, but not as far as he did with his mistress.
"There were a handful of instances wherein I crossed the lines I shouldn't have crossed as a married man, but never crossed the ultimate line," he said.
Sanford insisted his relationship with Maria Belen Chapur, whom he met at a dance spot in Uruguay eight years ago, was more than just sex. "This was a whole lot more than a simple affair. This was a love story," Sanford said. "A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day."
Even with the latest revelations, Sanford maintains he is fit to govern and has no plans to resign. "I've been able to do my job and in fact excel at it," he said, while acknowledging that he is a spectator at his "own political funeral."
Wednesday, Communications Director Joel Sawyer said the governor is finished discussing the matter. The Post and Courier had requested an interview with Sanford about how he plans to move forward.
"He is focused on being governor, on rebuilding his marriage, and on building back the trust of South Carolinians," Sawyer said.
During more than three hours of interviews over two days at his Statehouse office, Sanford said he is trying to fall back in love with his wife, Jenny, even as he grapples with his deep feelings for Chapur.
"I owe it too much to my boys and to the last 20 years with Jenny to not try this larger walk of faith," he said.
Sanford detailed more encounters with his mistress than he had disclosed during a rambling, emotional press conference last week.

And he delivered a personal check late Tuesday for nearly $3,000 to reimburse the state for a 2008 state-funded trip to Argentina during which he visited Chapur, and he insists no public money was used for any other meetings with her.
House Speaker Bobby Harrell said it is premature to heed calls from those in his own party to remove Sanford.
"I want to see what the investigation finds before I'm willing to discuss that topic," said Harrell, a Charleston Republican.
However, at least 10 of 27 Republican state senators have called for Sanford to resign.
Timeline
2001: Gov. Mark Sanford said he met Maria Chapur on a dance floor in Punta del Este, Uruguay, a beachside playground frequented by wealthy Argentinians. Sanford said the encounter was not romantic, though "there was a connection from the start." They struck up an e-mail correspondence.
2004: Sanford said he met Chapur for coffee in New York during the Republican National Convention.
June 2008: Sanford met Chapur in Argentina in the middle of an economic development mission. He said that's when their relationship turned physical.
September 2008: Sanford said he met Chapur in Manhattan. He said he flew coach, paid for the hotel in cash and told his staff he was reachable via cell phone.
November 2008: Sanford said he met Chapur in the Hamptons, a beach area on Long Island, which Sanford also said he paid for in cash.
Early 2009: Sanford's wife, Jenny, found out about the affair when she discovered a letter her husband had written to Chapur. Sanford said he traveled with his "spiritual adviser" to break off the relationship with Chapur.
June 2009: Jenny Sanford ordered the governor to leave the house. He traveled secretly to Argentina to meet Chapur once again.
Sanford acknowledged in the AP interviews that he had casual encounters with other women while he was married but before he met Chapur. They took place during trips outside the country to "blow off steam" with male friends.
"What I would say is that I've never had sex with another woman. Have I done stupid? I have. You know you meet someone. You dance with them. You go to a place where you probably shouldn't have gone," Sanford said. But he said those encounters were nothing like his relationship with Chapur.
"If you're a married guy, at the end of the day you shouldn't be dancing with somebody else. So anyway, without wandering into that field, we'll just say that I let my guard down in all senses of the word without ever crossing the line that I crossed with this situation," he said.
Sanford also detailed more visits with Chapur, including an encounter he described as a failed attempt at a farewell meeting in New York last winter, chaperoned by a spiritual adviser and sanctioned by his wife soon after she found out about the affair.
But he saw Chapur over Father's Day weekend and after his wife expressly told him not to, leaving the country without telling his staff and instead leading them to believe he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.
By the time he returned to a puzzled public, staff and family, his public image and emotional state had unraveled. He admitted the affair at a news conference televised nationally, but at the time said there were only four meetings with his mistress.
Sanford told the AP he saw Chapur five times over the last year, including two romantic, multi-night stays with her in New York, one in Manhattan, one in the Hamptons, both paid for in cash so no one would know, before they met in the city again with the intention of breaking up.
He said he saw her two other times before that, including their first meeting.
"There was some kind of connection from the very beginning," he said, though neither that first encounter nor a 2004 coffee date in New York during the Republican National Convention were romantic.
Their relationship turned physical, he said, during a government trip to Brazil and Argentina in June 2008; and when he returned, the e-mails that had started years earlier began to reflect anguish over what they had done.
"Now I am frightened," he told the AP, describing his state of mind at the time. "It was before safe. But now it's not safe. We gotta put the genie back in the bottle."
Sanford said he first became aware officials were looking for him Monday evening, June 22, four days after his departure for Argentina, when he checked his cell phone voice mail.
"I was reached ultimately on Monday evening," he said. "I was contacted and called (chief of staff) Scott (English) back that Tuesday morning."
He and Jenny, parents of four sons, say they are trying to reconcile their marriage but have not been sharing the same house for several weeks.
Jenny Sanford found out about the relationship in January when she discovered a letter the governor had written to his mistress.
Excerpts from AP interview
Quotes from Mark Sanford's wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press, conducted in his Statehouse office over two days:
On other women he encountered but before he met his Argentine lover, Maria Belen Chapur: "What I would say is that I've never had sex with another woman. Have I done stupid? I have. You know you meet someone. You dance with them. You go to a place where you probably shouldn't have gone. ... If you're a married guy at the end of the day you shouldn't be dancing with somebody else. So anyway without wandering into that field we'll just say that I let my guard down in all senses of the word without ever crossing the line that I crossed with this situation."
On meeting Chapur for coffee during the Republican National Convention in New York in 2004: "I remember there was an older couple sitting to our right, and I remember them watching us, in the way that we interacted. They could see a spark, or, I don't know what you'd call it, but there was something there."
On reconciling his affair while people were talking about him as a possible 2012 presidential candidate: "You kept compartmentalizing. That one is incredibly important in terms of the ramifications. And my passion for the world of ideas that impact this country and state. Um, the other was tied to, well what's different between left brain and right brain, is what it is. One was about these different concrete things I've been working on. And the other, the other is tied to (long pause) the pursuit of happiness. Whatever that is."
On his most recent trip to see Chapur in Argentina: "No, she knew I was coming. Didn't believe I was coming, but I got down on one knee and said I am here in the hope that we can prove this whole thing to be a mirage."
On weighing his political career against his relationship with her: "I will be able to die knowing that I had met my soul mate. But it was one of those things, I knew the cost."
On trying to deal with his feelings for her: "It's about incredibly deep conflicts, between one's heart and one's value system, and an 8 1/2-year wrestling match on that front."

Political funeral?
You, sir, have all but destroyed the family with which you were incredibly blessed & you are conjuring up an image of your political funeral?
You seem hell bent on burning bridges....in addition to having a difficult time being honest with yourself.
Soulmate? Love story?
Really?
Altho you quoted from Corinthians an email to Maria, your actions & what you have done to so many people, not the least of whom are your wife & children, are the antithesis of real love.
To use the word love in connection with what you have done & continue to do with these interviews, borders on blasphemy.

Ok, so he is "trying to fall back into love with his wife," he is tortured over the fact that he cannot be with his soul mate, and that theirs is a "forbidden" and "tragic" love story...
Jenny Sanford deserves to be THE one, number 1 to her husband. I cannot imagine the humiliation and pain she must feel hearing how deeply her husband loves another woman...and that he is trying to fall back into love with his wife for the sake of the family and their 20 years together.
The lack of respect he has for his wife (and the people of SC) is astounding.

MARK SANFORD: Do you need a Venn Diagram to point out that you are about to lose the most important treasure that anyone could ever have in their life--your family??? When you are old and estranged from your family and your "soul mate" has moved onto the next "hiking" adventure, you will sit back and reflect that Jenny and the boys were the best things that ever came into your life. Screw your political career, put some duct tape on your mouth (and zipper while you are at it), quit blabbering and crying to the press like a little girl, resign and go back to your family. And one last thing, quit using the press as your personal priest for your daily confessions. We already know how this old story ends...another adult in midlife crisis who has found his soul mate--how original! Ever read something similar about a couple in a setting named the Garden of Eden? Was it Adam and Eve??? No wait, sorry, it was Mark and Maria in Argentina. How's that apple tasting about right now, Mark?

What do Mark Sanford's idiot defenders think of their creep hero now?
Sanford continues to deliberately ridicule and humiliate his wife Jenny by publicly describing Maria as the love-of-his-life "soul mate" at the same time he condescendingly says that he'll make an effort to fall in love with Jenny again.
Don't do Jenny any favors, Mark. And Jenny, do what you should have done last week: serve your repugnant husband with divorce papers and dismiss him from your life.

I think Sanford need some time alone. Later send an assistant to pick up his sons at an agreed time and take them to Beauford or to his home in Columbia. Start spending time with his sons seperate from his wife. This will take the stress off the wife and give him time to evaluate life without her. From what I see all to many of his friends are trying to force a square peg through a round hole and he keep trying to make everyone understand that it just won't work. Probably her friends who get power via the govenors office are pushing, pushing, pushing her to make him come back. She should move on with her life before something horrible really happens.

"He delivered a $3,000 check to reimburse the state". He should be PROSECUTED like everyone else! He STOLE the taxpayers money of this state to use for his own infidelity. It's not a simple matter of giving it back! He has committed a CRIME, period! Since he is ABOVE the law, we should release ALL serving time for theft, robbery, shoplifting, money laundering, embezzlement, etc. and their record should be completely EXPUNGE! We can all help reduce the budget since our tax dollar won't be paying for their lodging, meals, and other services while incarcerated. As for this LIAR and THIEF, it serves S.C. right to be the laughing stock that it is.

Three thousand dollars is not nearly enough. By the way, how did he come up with that figure? uh uh uh ...let's see ...hmm, I wonder if I can get away with only giving back two-thousand ...no no no ..uh uh uh how about twenty-five hundred? ...uh..uh uh uh ...I know, three thousand dollars will keep everyone quiet ...that's it! three thousand! Will you take three-thousand? Take it! Take it! ...that's the least I can do! ...even-stevens, right? we good? yeah man we good! you're good and I'm good and everybody's good ... wew, I'm glad that's taken care of.
Now, by the way, there are other women, lots of them. Now, listen, I need to settle up on this one. While I have my check book out and I'm writing checks, how much do I need to write this check for? uh uh uh ...now, keep in mind, I didn't have sex with any of them ...uh uh uh ...now remember that, I crossed the line uh ..uh uh but not very far, okay? uh uh uh
Now, as far as Chapur, were cool on that one because she is my soul-mate, got that? SOUL-MATE!
We be cool, hey hey hey ...does anyone know if I have any frequent flyer miles left? I would really like to Argentina about now, just to blow off a little with the boys you know, with this stressful job and all ....uh uh uh ...will someone please get Delta SkyMiles people on the phone? ...hurry ...hurry up!

Mark is suffering from a huge case of "Baptist guilt". Your initial confession, while raw and real, was stupid. Should have delivered a pre-written mea-culpa, apologizing certainly, but without the tears and emotions. You have provided nothing but fodder for your enemies who smell blood. And let's be honest...that's what this is truly all about. Your enemies want you gone. Period.
You now further confess to "relations with other women-while not crossing the line". You need to shut up. With that puritanical reasoning-they might as well outlaw golf trips for the guys to Myrtle Beach. Which ironically almost always end up with a token appearance at the "Gentleman's Club" and then on to dancing at 2001... with whom?...what?....married women on a weekend trip with their girl friends. 99 times out of a 100, the ultimate line isn't crossed...but you still don't go home and talk about dancing.
Now quit acting like some high school football player just shunned by the head cheerleader. Be a man-grab some ball$ and get to work. You no longer control the situation with Jenny-she holds all the cards, and believe me, she is getting a ton of advice from her friends. If she wants you-she will try...if she doesn't, she won't. Simple as that. But your continued rambling comments do not help your situation...they won't tell you this...but they pretend to want an Alan Alda type..but they are secretly laughing behind your back.
Man Up and Shut Up!
Go Govern! This is about as uncomfortable as reading Jimmy Carter's interview in Playboy Magazine about "lusting in his heart".

GLOBAL WARMING OVERCOMES GOVERNOR
It would seem as though as the dog days of summer are arriving a little early this year. While most of us are getting ready for a nice long weekend of spending time with our families to celebrate the 4th of July barbecueing and watching fireworks, dear ole guv just can't wait for Saturday......firing shot after shot...... at himself.
Not content to hunker down ride it out after having bared his soul countless times in the last week, dear ole guv's "melt down" seems to be gaining momentum. Maybe there is some truth after all that global warming is upon us, after all what else could explain what we are seeing?
Dear ole guv proclaims that he is watching his own funeral, but really guv....Where did you get this idea? Do you imagine some type of Viking funeral pyre where the great warrior is pushed out to sea on a stack of logs that is set afire by an archer's flaming arrow? Guv you really need to stop being the guy shooting the flaming arrows.
No, what we are witnessing is history. A mental meltdown of epic proportions.....dear ole guv is confused and thinks the reporters are members of his Sunday afternoon therapy group and are really concerned with helping him resolve his inner conflicts.
It's time for Reggie Lloyd to put extra security around little Andy Bauer and protect our soon about to be next guv, because it doesn't look like Mark's meltdown is going to slow up any. Amazing isn't it, Deamocrats have been waring us about global warming for years.......and it seems to be affecting the Republicans first.

Sanford sounds like love sick puppy, a very drunk one.
He needs to resign. we don't need to spend tax payers money on an investigation. He already admitted to his infidelities, with more then one woman and he spent the tax payers money doing it. he sounds very stupid, its hard to believe this man has a business degree. It's hard to believe his wife stayed with him all these years. She should dump him and never look back. We need to dump him too. He is doing nothing that is relevant to being a Governor. I didn't know the Governors job required him to go to Brazil and Argentina in the past. He can't run the State, but he went to Brazil and Argentina for world affair's I suppose?? or just an affair on my taxpayer dollar and that makes me upset.
I'd be very happy to take his job as Governor, while I have no business degree I have been in business or 20 years and I know you don't go on all kinds of trips and feel sorry for yourself and dance with other people or screw around when you are in the business of serving the people. You do what you have to for your people. The best job. He seems to only be thinking of his personal life.
He sounds like he is mentally unstable. He should just go to his "soul mate" immediately. He is making a damn fool of himself. Soul mate, yeah, dream on.
She (ms. Argentina)must be quite pleasing in the sack. The head between his shoulders is not working, but the other one seems to be working to screw the State of SC.
All your leaders in charge backing this joker, you should leave too. If you think he is justified, you are worse then he is. You are not gentlemen and certainly you are no public servants.
I would be happy to work with Education, Health care and helping families. While creating good jobs in the State of SC. If they can't figure out how to do it by now, they need to stop playing politicians. It take's a hand's on person to know how to run business. A degree in business, doesn't mean you know how to run one and he is the perfect example.
Go back to Argentina Governor. Let's see how long your soul mate last's when she see's you aren't a Governor anymore. Perhaps, she could be your Eva Peron.....
then you really can say, don't cry for me Argentina. butthead!

Please remember the real issue here, despite the fact that he lied on national TV to his constituents, family and God, he is guilty of dereliction of duty and using tax payers money for a personal trip. This is the Gov. of the great state of SC, his only focus right now should be the high unemployment rate, high level of generational poverty, education etc. and instead he is living on my (tax payer) money mourning the loss of his "soulmate". In any other state this person would be impeached. Paying back a random amount of money does not excuse the crime. I am sure that the many people that are sitting in our overpopulated jails would love the chance to have made restitution for a get out of jail free card. This is all pretty hypocritical of the same person who went after a former President for having oral sex with someone in the white house ...you have done way worse. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE SANFORD, I am tired of seeing you use my hard earned tax money to pay the rent for your house when you can't even do your job. There are two kinds of hypocrisy running rampant through this horror story. The first is the hypocrite named Sanford. He and the other politicians who ran for office spouting a platform that included family values only to trash said values are hypocrites. Then you have the people who supported these slugs,in some cases even after being caught. I wonder how many of Gov. Sanford's supporters were calling for the head of the adulterer named Clinton. Here in this overwhelmingly Republican state, President Clinton was trashed early and often by people who were not willing to give him one iota of a chance. Where are these hypocrites now?

Someday, "it" will stop working, then the blood will return to the brain and maybe, just maybe, he'll think rational. But by then it will be too late for his family. As for now, he has personally nearly completed a meltdown bringing Jenny and his children with him. This continuing pubic, yes I said pubic, confessional fiasco has not only "crossed the line" of insanity, it's a downright embarrassment to a fine woman. Kick him back to Argentina and let him be with his "soul mate". He'll think he's happy for awhile, then reality will settle in and he'll get bored again and cross the dance line with some other idiot. Any man should consider being blessed to have such a woman as a wife and mother of his children. But then again, "it" seems to be in charge and once again, clouds a man's thinking to the point of a very, very, perfect storm.

It takes a superhero to do the right thing? Well, maybe in South Carolina if the good-old-boys network is that strong.
However, no matter how many ways one parses that sentence - even removing the Biblical reference - it comes out as utter nonsense.

As to the repair of the marriage....Mrs. Sanford CAN forgive him, it is possible. But she will never forget. His words will ring inside her head every day for years to come and she will never ever be able to trust him again. She will never be able to feel about him like she used to.

So glad to know that Sanford can die knowing he met his soul mate. I am sure that brings such comfort to Jenny Sanford and their 4 sons. I am sure it makes the 20 years she gave to him as his wife and mother of his children seem all worth while. I am sure it makes leaving her own career behind to be his full time cheerleader seem like the right choice ... don't ya think??? I am sure his sons are going to love reflecting back on all of this as adults one day knowing their father basically threw them under the bus to satisfy his own need to feel complete with his soul mate ... if only for a moment. I am sure it will make them feel all better knowing that he searched and searched until you found the right soul mate before you actually crossed the ultimate line. That is a good lesson to teach ... wait for the right one before you cheat. Would not want anyone to think you don't have morals!!!
I am so happy for you Governor Sanford. You are so lucky to be able to do all of this soul searching and then come home to a wife and family that is actually considering taking you back. Rather than putting the geine back in the bottle, why not put your best friend back in your pants and focus on your family's needs rather than your own. Rather than dwelling on the fact that you are a witness to your own political funeral, you need to drop to your knees and praise God that Jenny Sanford is giving you a second chance ... much less your children.
Can you believe this guy ... going on and on in the press about how he loved this woman out of one side of his mouth and then saying he wants to work things out at home out of the other? I have said it before on here ... he needs a mental evaluation ... AND QUICK!!!

Marriage is hard work, it's certainly not all romance and roses. And, it's all about overcoming our sinful natures that constantly prompt us to put ourselves and our own desires first. Jenny Sanford's 1st public response (the initial written statement) was very telling to me because she mentioned marriage being a commitment and a matter of the will in essence, staying with someone even when you don't "feel" like loving them. On the other hand, her husband's writings and public comments speak all about his feelings for this other woman and nothing really about his commitment to his wife that tells me he isn't very interested in working on his relationship. Also, simply saying that he needs to "fall in love with her again" indicates that he thinks his marriage relationship is about feelings and not the commitment that he made, regardless of his feelings at the moment. And, sadly, those who don't learn the difference between their feelings and their commitment will only go on to repeat the mistake with someone else because one day even those new wonderful feelings will fade.

It is their own business if Jenny and Mark decide to stay together or if they decide to split permanently - but I for one am against staying in a marriage for marriage sake or for the children's sake. I divorced several years ago, and I couldn't believe that some of my Christian friends kept telling me to stay in the loveless marriage because divorce is a sin or to stay because of the children. I cannot believe that God would want someone to remain unhappy all of her life in order keep a marriage vow. I have witnessed too many women who are imprisioned for a lifetime in a sad, loveless, unfullfilling marriage because of this mentality. Children know whether there is love or not and keeping them as a part of a dead marriage is torture to them as well. I am happy to say that my divorce was the best decision for me. My children are well-adjusted, their father is happier with someone else and so am I. We all get along better now in this new arrangement. Jenny needs to do what is best for her and her children- - staying with this man who is in love with another may not be the best thing - regardless of any vows. God will understand and forgive her getting a divorce if she chooses to do so.

This sort of thing could only happen to a Christian like the Governor...note how other faiths deal with this:
A couple preparing for a religious conversion meets with the orthodox rabbi for their final session.
The rabbi asks if they have any final questions.
The man asks, "Is it true that men and women don't dance together?"
"Yes," says the rabbi, "For modesty reasons, men and women dance separately."
"So I can't dance with my own wife?"
"No."
"Well, okay," says the man,"but what about sex?"
"Fine," says the rabbi. "A mitzvah within the marriage!"
"What about different positions?" the man asks.
"No problem," says the rabbi.
"Woman on top?" the man asks.
"Why not?" replies the rabbi.
"Well, what about standing up?"
"NO!" says the rabbi....
"Why Not???" asks the man.
"Could lead to dancing!"

So, lets say that he took the cheapest flight at $7,000. and repaid the state $3,000? He is so full of crap... it is coming out of his ears. He probably took the $10,412 Brazilian Airlines (harder to trace US passengers) which means he would still owe the state $7,000. Now let's add to that the additional 2 flights he say's he paid cash for, but that we know is a lie, because all US Airlines don't take cash... and even if they did, a man carrying between 7 and 11 thousand dollars would send up a red flag. Easy enough to trace as well. Let's look at back records for cash withdrawals of over $7,000.
He has possible stolen upwards of $30,000 to fly to see his mistress. That is not only an impeachable offence it is a felony that would send him to prison for years.

Please STOP using the Bible to justify your wrongdoing! If you bothered to actually READ it, you would see that: 1. Adultery is wrong, 2. Forgiveness only comes with repentance, i.e. continuing an illicit relationship between you and your mistress whether in fact or just entertaining the notion!
Please stop with the nonesene about "following your heart."
The Bible cautions against following the heart and admonishes us to use our heads. One such example is in Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 17:9-10, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."
You will have a lot to answer for, buddy. Not just to your wife, your kids, your employers (i.e., voters), and your business associates. The One who made the statement quoted above has no tolerance for the adulterization (pun intended) of His word.
You have some real business to take care of, and it's on your knees.
You compare yourself to David. I disagree. From your words, I see no repentance, whatsoever. Therefore, no forgiveness is justified.

GOP senators' request for Sanford to resign
S.C. majority leader Harvey Peeler, Senate finance chairman Hugh Leatherman, and four other Republican state senators released the following statement Tuesday calling on Gov. Mark Sanford to resign.
"Crisis requires people in leadership positions to act decisively, with as much dispassionate wisdom and judgment as possible.
Governor Sanford has imposed a crisis upon our state. As members of the Senate, we have a duty to the people of South Carolina to do what is in their best interests.
We therefore have concluded that Governor Mark Sanford must resign his office. He has lost the trust of the people and the legislature to lead our state through historically difficult times.
South Carolina has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Tens of thousands of South Carolinians cannot find jobs.
Necessary budget cuts have weakened public education and other vital services.
We must have strong leadership from a Governor who is focused and trusted.
Governor Sanford is neither.
We did not reach this conclusion in haste and we did not base it on his personal failings, but events since his news conference have forced us to act.
The recent revelation that he used taxpayer money to visit Argentina demonstrates that our state crisis will not recede while he is in office.
His own Commerce Department acknowledges the Governor requested additional economic development meetings in Argentina while on a legitimate trade mission to South America.
The Governor, through his spokesmen, deceived the media and public about where he was and what he was doing for several days.
He abandoned his office and the people who elected him with a premeditated cover-up, launching a constitutional crisis that was dangerous and reckless.
These disclosures indicate a pattern of abuse of office. Most disturbing is our belief that the Governor only admitted to these transgressions after he was caught.
The Governor's family crisis is private and tragic. But the crisis the Governor imposed by his abuse of office is the people's business and must come to an end.
We can only put this crisis behind us if he does the honorable thing and resign immediately.
The bottom line is that the Governor's private matters should remain private, but his deception and negligence make it impossible for us to trust him, and for him to govern in the future."
- Harvey S. Peeler, Majority Leader, South Carolina Senate
- Hugh K. Leatherman, Chairman, Senate Finance Committee
- Paul Campbell Jr., Senator, Berkeley County
- John M. "Jake" Knotts Jr., Chairman, Invitation Committee
- Larry A. Martin, Chairman, Senate Rules Committee
- William H. O'Dell, Senator, Abbeville County

Oh and by the way it is NOT against the law to have an affair. That is a "blue law" that is no longer used kinda of like the on that say you can beat your wife on the court house steps on Sunday. The guy screwed around, so what, so did the Dems next best thing to Barry, Clinton. They didn't care then, so why do they care now? Oh yeah, he's a Repub. My bad.

So the puppet strings broke and the puppet comes falling down. It is highly probable that Mark married for money and social status (obviously) and got tired of playing the games, probably never was in real love with his wife, was "managed" by her, her family, and the staff from day one. Only he got used to the elite status, the good life and thought it would go on forever. This would set the stage for an affair to happen so not a matter of IF cheating on his wife would happen but WHEN. He reminds me of the term "church husbands. They pretend to be religious to get a good woman, and even go to church every Sunday with them and the family! But at heart it means nothing to them, it's just part of the role to be played to keep their "investment" or trophy. These men will eventually get into porn and have affairs because there is no true anchor like love to hold them together. They are adept at role playing and deceit. Sanford's saga is not unique, it's just a shame it had to happen to someone entrusted to such a high office. It also appears that he is going out of his way to hurt his wife and family by the statements he has made. Would this be surpressed anger coming out? Or is it that he wants HER to get angry enough to file for divorce so his settlement won't be as expensive. Someone suggested that what set off this exposure could be payback for his refusal to go along with the stimulus plan. I have to agree the timing looks very suspicious for that and the Chicago thugs and the elite that he likes to brush noses with have effective ways of dealing with people that openly oppose them. BTW, his name appeared on several lists of being in attendance at more than one international secret society meeting over the last several years (Bilderberger's and another). I was very surprised to see his name on the list of such influential people. Not that he is influential but it sure suggests that something more is going on with this character than most people would imagine.

He is allowed to have a private life even if he is in charge of the state. If every man or woman in government who have done something considered by your religion to be immoral we would have a sorry bunch of political leaders. None of them could be nice looking, have no charisma, or appeal to anyone. I find most of the posts to be just plain JEALOUSY. Yes, but when that private life involves him skipping town while using public funds....well, privacy is null and void. And when he starts talking to the media and putting his business out there...again, null and void.
"If every man or woman in government who have done something considered by your religion to be immoral we would have a sorry bunch of political leaders."
This is Sanford's religion as well. He is a Christian and went against everything he supposedly believed in by indulging in extra-marital affairs. And we DO have a sorry bunch of political leaders. Have you not been paying attention?
"None of them could be nice looking, have no charisma, or appeal to anyone."
????
"I find most of the posts to be just plain JEALOUSY."
Yep, we are very JEALOUS that we are not committing "political suicide" and hurting our family and friends for the sake of some "side booty" all while making ourselves look like hypocritical idiots in the meantime. Yes, very JEALOUS indeed.
"He looks like he has been so beaten down by the wife, media and the people around him, it makes one have enormous sympathy for him."
Correction: It makes YOU have enormous sympathy for him. This is all his own doing.
"Everyone wants their pound of flesh, why, he did not promise to be a perfect man when he became your Govenor."
Nope, but he did VOW to "love, honor, and cherish" his wife, "forsaking ALL others 'til death do us part."

Yes there is a record but that doesn't mean that his staff knew where he was and if they did they are just as stupid as Sanford is for covering for him.
"People who were following his movement[s] knew where he was (for [sic] instance the newspaper had his e-mails)."
Oh yeah, since he knew that the newspaper had his email (sarcasm here) he figured they should have known that he was going to dance the horizontal Polka with his Argentine mistress. Makes perfect sense (again, sarcasm).
"He protected his staff by saying he mislead them, I wish at least one would step forward [sic]."
Oh yeah, just like he is protecting his wife and children from this train wreck that we see before us?
"I am not his supporter,"
Of course you are not. You are probably some married man's side piece and feel that it is so romantic that the Lovenor is actually doing all of this in the name of love and you are living vicariously through this. You are watching this whole thing praying that your Mister will be inspired by this gagalicious (yes, I made that word up) "love story."
"but he is an Episcopatian I believe, which is not a born again religion like Baptist."
Again, WTF!!!!!???? Is Episcopatian a denomination of you religion Stupidology? But, if you meant Episcopalian (which I happen to be) you are incorrect in the assertion that we are not "born again", but I won't delve into that here.
"As for his wife, if there was a problem and she was not caring for him, they are no longer married."
Oh, another practice of Stupidology. Also something you are telling yourself to justify your little affair.
"I love the way ultra religious people nit pick through the Bible to make it say what they want to believe."
Um, yeah. Just like you and Sanford did.
"What happens when a government [sic] official travels and just spends the day sight seeing, does this mean they have to pay part of their travel expenses?"
Um, yeah. That is called "PERSONAL TIME" and is therefore not reimbursable by the government. When a government official takes trips they are required, BY LAW, to claim any leave on their travel orders so that the government knows what not to pay for.
"You are trying to write rules to beat up on Sanford."
WOW! Just wow! Did I write the rule that a husband or wife shouldn't cheat on his/her spouse? Man, I'm good. Let's what other rules I can play Quantum Leap and write.
"Why, because you support anyone from Charleston to finish Sanford term? Be careful what you wish for."

Are you FINALLY getting the hint that you can't excel at your job? You never did and you certainly won't now. You are tired, yawning, beat down and the folks of South Carolina are SICK of you. Leave, go, adios, vamos, we don't want you representing the state of South Carolina any longer.
Are you getting some kind of mentoring from Rod Blagojevich on how to be the biggest gluteus maximus in the entire country?????
Have a nice 4th of July holiday and come back on Monday with your resignation letter in hand. Good riddance and all of the folks in South Carolina sincerely hope that you find your soul mate--just do it out of the press and without crying like a big Pu$$.
And please quit portraying yourself in the press as a victim and a martyr. You brought this ALL upon yourself and your family and you are an idiot, period. You are worse than a Greek tragedy.

Lovely-From one 2 time Sanford voter & fellow Episcopalian(Anglo-Catholic) to another-good job with Sandy. I believe you nailed her agenda. (I threw in the Anglo-Catholic to give her something else to ponder)
Oh, & Sandy...according to the reports I've read, Jenny Sanford did not go rifling through his desk just for the nosiness(my new word) of it.
HE ASKED HER TO GO FIND A PARTICULAR DOCUMENT (CAPS FOR YOUR BENEFIT)
So, to answer your question "what wife has that absolute nerve": ONE WHO WAS ASKED BY HER GOVERNOR HUSBAND TO GO LOOK FOR A SPECIFIC DOCUMENT!!! That's who.
Have you wondered why that letter was in a file he asked her to go through? Thought not.

Sanford Affair Circus
SC has not seen this much disgust and embarassment since Rita and John Jennrette of Myrtle Beach. Mark, Resign NOW, and save your face and give SC back its Grace. Now the First Lady of SC is MIA!

Way back in the beginning I suggested that he left the letter for her to find. I am sure he expected her to take it directly to her attorney and it would be all over, but man she inlisted everyone she knew to save her marriage to a Govenor from SC. I really don't think SC has a lot of Grace as has been demonstrated these last few days on these blogs. When I moved to SC I was expecting so much because my family had settled the Durham area in the early 1700's, A couple of the brothers went west and I had heard stories all my life. What a rude awakening I got about Grace, Manners and the Genteel life of the south. That is now irrelevant and my favorite place to live is CA, where all the radical Dems live. I am positive Mark Sanford will survive and have a great relationship with his sons whether with his wife or not.

Sandy-it certainly seems you are measuring "Grace,Manners and the Genteel life of the south" according to some biased yardstick you are holding(very subtle pun intended).
Please don't tell the rest of us that your comments on Jenny Sanford are examples of "Grace,Manners and the Genteel life of the south".
Remember Sandy..above all else, do not be a hypocrite.

LOL, abit, I almost feel sorry for Ms. Sandy Home wrecker (note I said ALMOST). She seems to be in a "tragic and forbidden love story" herself. With that, I believe that she is so overjoyed that someone who had such strong family values and is in the public eye is going through the same thing that she refuses to see the fault in Mr. Sanford or Ms. Chapur, for that matter. That would mean that she would have to admit that she and her beau are wrong in what they are doing. Whatever helps her sleep at night!
P.S. I am sure she is still scratching her head over the Anglo-Catholic thing...LOL!

Also, she is more than likely equating Mrs. Sanford to the wife in her sordid affair. She is IN THE WAY!!!!!

Lovely, you are making me laugh way too much this morning.
Some of the comments posted here have such poor diction and grammar, that I want to say what the Geico caveman said in one of their commercials: "....uh....WHAT?"

vmirat, LMAO! I really hate grammatical errors. That is why I try to be correct in my posts. If I make a mistake, I try to post a correction immediately. I am anal that way....wait....should I say "anal" in a post on a story about a cheating govenor? LOL!

I also try to communicate via grammar rules, correct spelling & logical sequencing of words & thought.
My middle school teacher who used to threaten to crush us into greasy spots on the floor if we made the same mistake twice, scarred me for life!
I hope I don't have any mistakes in this post. However, that middle school teacher is long gone to glory, so I suppose I'm fairly safe now. Fear at this point might be a bit irrational.
Lovely, if "anal" applies as a descriptive, you can use it any time you want!
Actually it strikes me that it is quite appropriate on this thread!
