— South Carolina has lost another assistant football coach. But this move was expected, and the corresponding hire came swiftly.

Ray Rychleski

Sources confirmed special teams coordinator Ray Rychleski accepted an invitation Tuesday to join the Indianapolis Colts in a similar capacity. Rychleski's former boss at Wake Forest, Jim Caldwell, is now the head coach there.

A source also said Steve Spurrier moved to hire Johnson "Jeep" Hunter to coach the Gamecocks' tight ends, something Rychleski had also done in his one season with the team.

Hunter, from Denver, N.C., was a finalist for the running backs job that went to former Tennessee running back Jay Graham. Among Hunter's stops, he coached at Georgia Tech and Memphis.

While at Memphis, he worked with current Carolina Panthers standout DeAngelo Williams.

Defensive assistant Shane Beamer, a source confirmed, will move over to take Rychleski's title as special teams coordinator. Beamer was the likeliest of options, considering his family tree.

His father, Frank, built the Virginia Tech program in large part because of special teams prowess. Beamer was the special teams co-coordinator in 2007, his first season at USC.

Counting strength coach Mark Smith, who left in December for Tennessee, Rychleski becomes the sixth USC assistant to leave the program for another job or be fired.

Editor's note: Earlier versions of this story gave the incorrect year for Beamer's first season at USC. The Post and Courier regrets the error.

The way Spurrier treats his quarterbacks demoralizes them (hence the poor finishes in 07 and 08), the entire team and apparently the coaching staff as well. Yelling at your quarterbacks each and every time they come to the sideline just breaks their spirit and everyone else's also. I had high hopes for Spurrier, but we should have realized after the Redskins debacle that he's a "has been". Apparently most of staff agrees and have made/are making their exit.

Your intelligence is astounding, lack thereof that is. Since you've given up on Spurrier how about refraining from commenting until he's gone....deal?
