S.C. wonders: What next?
Area residents, lawmakers have high hopes for the new commander in chief's actions
By Robert Behre
WASHINGTON — As the days-long inaugural party came to an end here Wednesday, people began wondering now that Barack Obama is president, what exactly will change.
Sarah Eble, a Wando High graduate attended the Grits & Granite Inaugural Ball on Tuesday in Arlington, Va.
And South Carolinians who either work here or who traveled here for the festivities have a lot of specific hopes.
Rachel Collier of Summerville graduated from the College of Charleston last year but had trouble finding a job and had to borrow to make ends meet. She hopes Obama can turn around the economy soon.
"I'm treading water now financially. It's the same story with all the folks who graduated with me in May," she said. "I have a three-year plan to get out of the debt that I'm in. It's just going to take some time."
During his inaugural address, Obama called for "a new era of responsibility." Marlene Johnson of the College of Charleston said Obama's message has been that he can't do it all himself.
"He's really energized the youth. A lot of the change he's calling for will not come about by government," Johnson said. "It has to be individual effort. If they don't do anything about it, change will not come about."
Sarah Eble, 21, a senior at American University and a 2005 Wando High School graduate, spent the last several days attending inaugural events. Eble said she's hopeful that the policy decisions by the Obama administration and the president's support of congressional actions designed to cure the country's ailments will turn things around.
Superintendent of Education Jim Rex attended the Grits & Granite Inaugural Ball on Tuesday in Arlington, Va.
Longtime journalist and Southern historian Jack Bass of Charleston said Obama indicated during his inaugural speech that notable change could take a few years. The country has moved from pessimism to hope, Bass said.
Jared Esselman, who interned in the Bush White House and serves as president of the College of Charleston's political science club, said his hope is that Obama can rescue the tumbling housing market and the nation's credit crisis. But Esselman also said Obama needs a little luck in the form of no fresh crisis while he focuses on the current ones.
"He cannot afford a Katrina. He cannot afford a 9/11," Esselman said, "but he can't control that."
Longtime Democrat and College of Charleston political science professor Tom Chorlton hopes Obama will advance the gay rights agenda but hopes even more that he will close Guantanamo Bay prison. "I think that is fundamentally central for our relationship with the world," Chorlton said.
South Carolina's congressional delegation also has its own set of hopes.
While U.S. Rep. Henry Brown is a Lowcountry Republican, he hopes Obama can break down the political barriers of which he often speaks. "I'm hoping with a new face and a new voice somehow we can find unity," Brown said.
State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex said South Carolina provided, at the administration's request, a list of "shovel-ready (school) projects" that could be part of the recovery package being drafted in Congress. The list includes replacing J.V. Martin Junior High School, the crumbling Dillon school where Obama campaigned, and Rex noted there also are local referendums in place to help pay the cost.
U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said the argument should not be over how big or small government is but whether it works. The country must use its best minds to figure out how to put Americans to work, he said.
A key to moving forward is managing expectations, Clyburn said. "We have to be patient."

Why weren't these kinds of questions asked by these very same people not just before the inaugural but also before the election?

And, as a Poltical Science major from the College of Charleston, I laugh at and ridicule Chorlton's absurd contention that closing Guantanamo "...is fundamentally central to our relationship with the world". This is the rant of a LEFT WING SIMPLETON and our young people deserve better than having him or anything like him filling their heads with retarded garbage.

Keep in mind that the people that Obama Hussein wants to release from Gitmo are the same people who planned 9/11. Being worried about world opinion is foolish in the face of our national security. The rest of the world is NOT our friends. These same people danced and cheered when thousands of Americans died when these same detainees executed their plan of terrorism on 9/11.

Breaking down the political barriers is something they all say. Your soon to see what "a new era of responsibility" requires. Your new diplomas hopefully will allow you to make income in which the Obama administration will soon be taking a good 40% to 50% of! When the libs talk about responsibility that doesn't mean all people just the employed.

The only time that this country has enjoyed any real respect in the world community is when it has put its blood on the line for the rest of the world, regardless of the political party in power. The ingrates still do not realize that our blood is still on the line keeping Western Civilization in the world safe. However, the enemies of our culture and freedoms do recognize this.

blue_eyes: 'The world hates us because of Bush's illegal policies'
You really should do some research. Last time I looked, Bush was not in office when US barracks were bombed in Lebanon. Khomeini's reign was before Bush. North Korea's distaste for the US is long before Bush. There are many more. We have and will always be infidels to the radical Muslim way of thinking. Our friendship with Israel is just but one reason that elevates the hate. Their hate is no different than if you knew someone was hanging around with someone you despised. You would despise them too. Other countries hate us because we TRY to impress human rights where their culture provides them with an environment that we condemn. Cuba's hate towards us began long before Bush.
You also allude to Bush and his Republicans ignoring the issues concerning the economy. Then why would Bill Clinton put blame on his own party's failure to enact regulation legislation to keep financial groups in check. Bill Clinton knew this was coming and his tenure let it slide. Then the Demos had control of congress and NEVER allowed legislation to prevent or at least try to reduce it. There is enough blame to go around for everyone yet the liberal media and people like you have blinders on which prevent you from seeing everything. Brainwashed ranting liberals should clear their mind and move to the center where they can focus on reality. The best way to keep stuff like this from happening in the future is TERM LIMITS. It has been proven time and again that long term politicians have increased participation in corrupted politics. These economic issues did not take place in the last 8 years. It has been festering for many years; and just kept growing to the pustule popped.
In the article: 'But Esselman also said Obama needs a little luck in the form of no fresh crisis while he focuses on the current ones.'
Hmm like 911 and Katrina following 911 and then the economy following Katrina. You mean these same distractions to keep a President from managing the country better.
Too Obama's credit, he sure jumped out of the styles fast. His executive order banning lobbying, forcing cabinet members to sever ties, freezing pay and the big one of stopping Biden's partisan attacks shows he may be on to something. Partisanship is what helped put this country in the current situation and he will have his biggest challenge fighting the likes of Pelosi and Reid. Unfortunately for him, some of his cabinet picks have bad baggage being published. The picks are also starting to show the signs of old school (Clinton mainly) and not change. Remember, Clinton's policy may have left us with a balance budget and surplus of money in the bank, but he also left office leaving us with a 6 trillion dollar national debt. Ya gotta pay da bills bubba.

No, Ballachulish, I am not jealous. I don't like seeing my Alma Mater teaching impressible young minds such an obvious absurdity. There is FAR, FAR more to our "relationship" than just Guantanamo. This is an ideologue with a confused agenda. He should be teaching his students to think critically, not attempting to indoctrinate them.
My Poli Sci degree has worked really well and definitely gives me an enormous leg up on many though not all of the posters here, including the knowledge base to pinpoint just how bizarre this man's thinking really is. Of course, I was extremely well educated, not indoctrinated. One of the two best professors I had there was clearly a liberal (I knew this from one-on-one discussions with him, since he was one of my two advisors) and he kept his personal politics OUT OF THE CLASSROOM. He might still be there. His name was David Mann. I'm one of the very few who aced him. He was very tough and demanding as a professor.

Just a tip, guys, but claiming that everyone who disagrees with you is just brainwashed by the liberal media is a cheap and intellectually bankrupt shot.
Simply because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean that they're wrong or that they have been brainwashed by one of various outlets for acquiring learning and information. All the same, if you're willing to take the cheap shot of saying someone is wrong because they follow a biased media source then you open yourself up to the same criticism, because your own chosen media outlet could be just as biased toward the other extreme.
The supposedly liberal media is in reality a great deal more objective than most "independent" news outlets who have no oversight and take no responsibility or accountability for their journalism. At least the "liberal" media plays at fairness and presents both sides, even if they either subtly or not-so-subtly prefer one side or the other. In many cases, such as one of McCain's appearances on a talk show, the alleged liberal bias of the media only comes into play when the politician being interviews uses that excuse to dodge or evade questions. Still, presenting points of view and giving them time for expression is at least a play at objectivity, which is leagues beyond the smear tactics and slander of online rags and misanthropic blogs.

Ballachulish, it is "enormous enough" to dissect and dismiss your poor and incorrect assessment of English grammar. First, "extremely" is an adverb modifying the adverb "well" which modifies and clarifies the verb "educated". It is not "redundant". The word you are reaching for is "tautologous", which means unnecessary use of a word, phrase, or clause because it is REPEATING something already said. Sraight As in 300 level English classes just blew you away.

Itgrunt: Perhaps you do not see where the mainstream media demonstrates bias, but many people do...& not just conservatives. I know a number of liberals who are either observant, objective, or honest enough to acknowledge that there is a definitive & significant media bias which usually leans to the left.
A good friend in California who is a yellow dog liberal & a Hillary supporter was very disturbed over the media treatment of her, & finally in discussions over this admitted that this bias naturally becomes noticeable when it is one's favorite candidate that is getting bashed & that is why she probably never really noticed or cared about this type of thing happening to conservatives.
I am not a Hillary fan but, even so, it was clear to me that the media had a favorite for the democratic nominee, & it was not Hillary. I was not pulling for any of the democrats but I mentioned to a number of people-conservatives & liberals-that the media treatment of Hillary was pretty outrageous.
Sometimes the bias is not in the form of bashing, but rather in the form of ignoring or pretty much giving zero coverage to a major candidate. Sometimes it came in the placement of the candidates on stage for a debate. Sometimes it came in the form of how many questions & what type of questions were given to a candidate.
Seems to me that one has to employ a certain amount of willful blindness to be able to state that media bias is subtle or insignificant.

All those muslim countries that were muslim at the end of WWII are still muslim. Actually, thanks to us, there are more muslim countries in the world now than at the end of WWII. Our cold war victory over the USSR, for example, provided the opportunity for the creation of several muslim countries. Don't take my word for it; go check the map. Even now, the Pax Americana in Europe is allowing France to commit cultural and (in their case non-religious) suicide by becoming another muslim country in a few years thanks to their unrestrained immigration policies.

Of the 128 people released from Gitmo so far 63 have been involved with other terriorist activities again. They say that water boarding is torture. Part of a Navy S.E.A.Ls training is being water boarded. No complaints there.
People complain of torture, just look at McCains scars from his time being a POW. That was torture and scars.
Look at what happened to Daniel Pearl for the world to see live. They beheaded him with a dull machete. Where is the uproar over that? Civil rights groups for that?
Until we as a nation wake up and realize that the poeple we are fighting, fight dirty, don't play by the rules then we will always be victimized.

9/11 Families Outraged by Obama Call to Suspend Guantanamo War Crimes Trials
Families of victims of terrorist attacks say they are outraged by President Obama's call to halt the trials of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.
Family members of people killed on September 11, 2001, and in other terror attacks say they are outraged by President Obama's draft order calling for the suspension of war crimes trials of prisoners being held at Guantanamo Bay.
"To me it's beyond comprehension that they would take the side of the terrorists," said Peter Gadiel, whose son, James, was killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11. "Many of these people have been released and been right back killing, right back at their terrorist work again."
Obama's request on the first full day of his presidency came as a draft order was being prepared ordering the closing of the Guantanamo prison within a year. A judge responded by halting the case against a Canadian detainee accused of killing an American soldier in Afghanistan, issuing a 120-day continuance in the case.
"I see no reason why we should delay these proceedings. Let justice be served," said Jefferson Crowther, whose 24-year-old son, Welles, was killed in the Twin Towers after he saved the lives of several others."

If you really have to wonder whats next, then you must be stupid or ignorant. One only has to read the statement made by Robert Reich, Husseins close advisor and labor secretary. Now stay with me on this. Remember that Hussein told "all" of us that the "bailout" money will be used to rebuild and improve the infrastructure and to stimulate the enconmy. He forgot to tell you he was going to also use this money to pay for abortions in African nations, but I digress. Also keep in mind that Reich is a very close confident of Husseins. Here is a quote from one of Reich's recent pressers: "the billions of dollars in the proposed economic stimulus plan should be allocated with social issues in mind, to make sure the money doesn't go to just "white male construction workers" or the highly skilled." I am not taking this quote out of context. Actually, the rest of the article reveals more insidious crap against the "white male". Hussein is nothing but a dyed in the wool pure closet racist. If the ol' Rev. Wright did not convince you, maybe this will. Oh, I almost forgot about that pig Rev. Lowery's outright racist remarks that he spewed while giving the benediction. It made me sick watching Hussein smile while this pig was making his racist remarks. That is all I had to witness. Here is a link to the story. Robert Reich tells House panel stimulus package should emphasize 'social return' over worker skill
Robert Reich, who served as labor secretary under President Clinton, was speaking to the House Steering and Policy Committee Jan. 7 about funding infrastructure projects across the nation.
"It seems to me that infrastructure spending is a very important and good way of stimulating the economy. The challenge will be to do it quickly, to find projects that can be done that will have a high social return, that also can be done with the greatest speed possible," Reich said.
"I am concerned, as I'm sure many of you are, that these jobs not simply go to high skilled people who are already professionals or to white male construction workers," he said.

We torture .......
OK lets look at what other countries do. Like what happens when you get captured in Iraq or Afghanistan. They torture you and kill you. What happened in Vietnam torture. I am sure the Germans did it. Japs yep. We are one of the few countries that treat prisoners of war the way they should be treated. I'm sure it has happened but for the most part we are saints compared to everyone else. I just can't wait to see what all these obama supporters say when we have another 911. Or when the economy keeps going down the tubes, and he can't fix it. I wounnder how quickly they will turn on him.

Under Sadaam's rule they were known to parade recently decapitated heads on sticks through the streets. But if we play sh itty music for hours it's considered torture. LOL

Yeah Sadaam got that idea from Victor Charles, a head on a stick gets your attention, especially if it was your buddy sleeping next to you the night before, it's all in the psyops.

Longtime Democrat and College of Charleston political science professor Tom Chorlton hopes Obama will advance the gay rights agenda but hopes even more that he will close Guantanamo Bay prison. "I think that is fundamentally central for our relationship with the world," Chorlton said.
