Mock tornado hits Daniel Island
Daniel Island School wants to warn people not to be alarmed when they see fire, police and media trucks swarm the school between 9 and 11 a.m. today.
The school will be the site of a mock tornado hit. All students will participate in a tornado drill expected to last about as long as the school's monthly fire drills. And then rescue crews will use two classrooms to continue their training; simulating a tornado hit that caused injuries. No one will be allowed to enter or leave the Daniel Island School campus during the simulation.
ECCO offering care for the uninsured
East Cooper Community Outreach is offering medical care for the uninsured.
Flu shots will be offered to diabetics and the uninsured 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. A mammogram van will be at East Cooper Community Outreach 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 22.
ECCO is also offering the general equivalency degree exam 9 a.m.-noon Jan. 20. To make an appointment, call Meredith Johnson at 849-9220.
Hearing loss luncheon Jan. 27
Doctors from Advanced Hearing Care are hosting a free educational luncheon seminar entitled "How Better Hearing Can Improve the Quality of Your Life" featuring the latest advancements in digital hearing technology.
The seminar will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 27 at Water's Edge Restaurant. Reservations are required. Call 849-8604 for reservations.
SI oyster roast coming up Feb. 14
Sullivan's Island will hold the first of two annual oyster roasts 5-8 p.m. Feb. 14 under the big tin roof to raise funds for Sullivan's Island Fire & Rescue volunteers.
The event will feature live music from Hot Sauce. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the night of the event for all-you-can-eat oysters. People should bring their own oyster knives. Hot dogs and fish stew also will be available. The fish shack is located near Middle and Hennessy streets just outside Fort Moultrie. Turn left onto Station 15 from Middle Street and look for the search light and a large crowd.
Tickets are available at the Sullivan's Island Fire Station, Sullivan's Island Town Hall, Exit Realty on Sullivan's Island, Piggly Wiggly at Sea Island Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant and Simmons Seafood on Isle of Palms.
