State budget writers to hear from chief justice
Associated Press
Tuesday, January 13, 2009
COLUMBIA — South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal is expected to tell legislators how she'll handle budget cuts.
Toal is scheduled to testify Tuesday afternoon before a House budget writing committee about her $31.5 million general fund budget.
Documents the court system filed with budget writers showed deeper budget cuts would force more state court workers to rely on fine and fee collections for their pay.
Gov. Mark Sanford's executive budget kept a $2.2 million across-the-board cut in effect for the courts that came in December with a 7 percent across-the-board reduction needed to keep the state's budget balanced.
Sanford wants more than $600,000 more trimmed, including travel, administration and custodial services.
