Philip Middleton recognized for pro bono efforts
Charleston attorney has won the state Bar's 2008 Pro Bono Award ahead of this week's House of Delegates meeting in Myrtle Beach.
Philip Middleton was named an outstanding volunteer lawyer.
In 2008, he represented an indigent client in a land fraud case in Charleston County. After nearly three years, 57-year-old widow Sherry Ann Felder finally won her 5-acre rural country property back in a land sale that went sour. Her story was chronicled in The Post and Courier.
"Philip took this case on not knowing the extent to which it would develop and has taken to heart the cruelty of the matter and the danger to this woman who lives in such substandard conditions. He is to be congratulated on his hard work, as well as his compassion," said nominator and Charleston paralegal Dannie Manning.
Middleton graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1969 and was admitted to the Bar that same year. He practices in the areas of real estate, criminal law and probate law. He has also served as a volunteer for the Bar's Pro Bono Program and member of the Ethics Advisory Committee.
Editor's note: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly stated that Dannie Manning is a lawyer. The Post and Courier regrets the error.

It is a much earned and much deserved reward to Mr. Middleton. One must take note of the wonderful support of Mrs. Dannie Manning, as those successful usually get there with the help of another great person. Enormous credit shall be given to the Pro Bono Services of Charleston. Attorneys everywhere should consider calling its contender, Mr. Marvin Feingold. This case is an example of how rewarding such service can be for oneself and for others. The desperate need of help goes even deaper, as the St. Philip's Episcopal Church of Charleston has reached out to this widow. The team there does know who they are, and I am very confident that God will bless them MORE than 10-fold. Truly said is what we have all heard: What goes around, comes around. In this case, it has shown in many good ways. Have no doubt, seriously, that this woman surely would have lost all that her dear husband worked for all those years if it were not for the Pro Bono Services and them calling upon Mr. Middleton. Thanks to the expertise and good judgement of Judge Scarborough. I am prayerful and thoughtful of all parties involved.
