Dorchester traffic consultants want input

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Dorchester County's traffic consultants will hold a workshop for public input from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Summerville Chamber of Commerce, 402 N. Main St.

The county hired Kimley-Horn and Associates of Raleigh to come up with a transportation plan for the next couple of decades. The plan is expected to be finished next summer.

The workshop will include small-group discussions to identify needs and potential improvements.

The consultants will not only consider new roads but other ways to reduce traffic congestion, such as more buses, a train between Summerville and Charleston, roads with safe lanes for bicyclists and walkers, staggered work shifts to reduce rush hour gridlock, and connecting more existing streets so all the cars aren't funneled onto main arteries.

Kimley-Horn is also working with the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments to come up with a regional transportation plan for the Charleston area.

You guys are about 10 years behind the out of contol growth rate. It will take another 10 years to get anything approved and completed. By the time you get to this point, you will be 20 years behind the growth rate. Too little, too late. Typical of the southern way of thinking.
