Annual career fair draws more than 1,000

The crowd of job seekers was bigger than ever, the pickings slimmer. More than 400 people were at the doors to compete for a handful of jobs when the annual Career Fair opened today.

And three hours later they were still piling into the Charleston Convention Center, more than 1,000 of them, wearing suits and ties or slacks and jackets, grayhaired with briefcases or with toddlers in tow. Inside, fewer than 20 companies had set up tables. The iQor call center was hiring 30 people per week. Waffle House was looking for three.

The 2009 Career Fair, sponsored by The Post and Courier and Monster.com, has been held for more than eight years. It's always drawn a lot of attention and has a good record of placing workers, organizers said.

This year was tougher.
