Kapstone idles 100 workers for a week, blames economy

KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp., which bought the North Charleston paper mill from MeadWestvaco Corp. last year, is slowing production in response to weak demand.

The company is shutting down one of three linerboard production machines for a total of two weeks, said Larry Cobb, communications director. The first one-week shutdown period started today.

The roughly 100 employees who work on the affected production line will have to either take unpaid time off or use vacation days, Cobb said. Northbrook, Ill.-based KapStone is not laying off any workers, he said.

Cobb blamed slowed economic conditions for the temporary shutdown.

"There's a weak order backlog, which essentially means orders have slowed down," he said.

The mill makes paper products that are used to make folding cartons and linerboard, which is used to make corrugated cardboard.
