To no one's surprise, Sue Monk Kidd remains the people's choice.

Winner of Best Drama and Independent Movie laurels at the 35th annual People's Choice Awards, the film adaptation of the Mount Pleasant author's celebrated 2002 novel "The Secret Life of Bees" was written for the screen and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The book has sold more than 5 million copies in 34 countries and for two years had a firm grip on The New York Times Best Seller list.

Set in rural South Carolina in 1964 (though shot near Wilmington, N.C.), "Bees" is the story of Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning), a 14-year-old girl haunted by the memory of her late mother (Hilarie Burton), who she barely knew. To flee her lonely life and an abusive father (Paul Bettany), Owens escapes with her friend and nanny Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) to a town that may harbor the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by the Boatwright sisters (Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo and Alicia Keys), in whose embrace Owens finds succor in the realm of beekeeping. But not everyone in town appreciates the sisters' sense of charity.

"Bees" had its world premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 5, eliciting an enthusiastic response.
