GOOSE CREEK — Investigators are trying to determine what led to shots being fired in broad daylight Thursday afternoon across from Goose Creek High School.

Gunfire crackled on Red Bank Road and a chase ensued about 2 p.m., prompting the Berkeley County School District to lock down five area schools as a precaution.

No one was injured, and authorities arrested two men in connection with the case.

The gunfire erupted at Prestige Car Wash next to Creek Bank Plaza, where Berkeley County deputies later found shell casings, said Dan Moon, public information officer for the Sheriff's Office. He said deputies chased a white Ford pickup truck from the area to Rutt Lane off Howe Hall Road, where one of the men was taken into custody.

One suspect ran behind the high school campus, prompting the lockdown there and at Sedgefield Intermediate School, Sedgefield Middle School, Howe Hall Arts Infused Magnet School and Goose Creek Primary School. All are in the Goose Creek area.

The schools were reopened by about 3 p.m. said Pam Bailey, school district executive director of public relations. She said an automated phone message would be sent to parents to explain the situation.

Suspect names were not available Thursday night.

My niece got home from one of the locked down schools at 4:30, just in time to get the Automated message that said she had been locked down for "Law Enforcement action". It explained nothing.

I guess they don't want parents to show up at the school looking to pick up their kids until its all over with.

Parents = more targets, probably wise not to advise of the lockdown. I'm sure they were inundated with calls to the district anyways, and I bet that the city PD was too, even though this all occurred outside city limits.

I agree that "Parents=more targets", but what are you going to do. This is a no-win decision, since most parents these days are nuts over the wrong things. Anyway, I wonder how long does it take for an automated caller to call and leave a message for 1 to 2 thousand numbers. I'm sure that more details in the message = longer hours to get the word out to everyone. If it takes 1 minute per call (dial, answer, relay message, hang up, reconnect), then that's 1000 minutes or over 16 hours. If they started calling at 3PM, then the last call should just about be completed by this time for 1000 calls. If your last name was in the middle of the alphabet, then you probably could be a little irritated for being awakened.
